I almost felt like making an effort post about this, I have been thinking about how my stepmom, a fine old southern lady, would get all fired up with righteous indignation about something almost every day, often many times a day. What wasn't clear to me before, this was her at her best. Righteous anger is one of the main tenets of conservatism. It grants you both motivation and moral authority to do what you want with it. It lets you turn your angst into a divinely-sanctioned crusade. You can take that authority and turn it into power over others with the full moral imperative that they do your will, because your will is synonymous with righteousness. And it gives you full confidence that you are unequivocally in the right at all times. Not to say that it's wrong or that she was wrong, but it can obviously be easily perverted by people of bad faith. I mean it's obvious, sure, but I'm just a big dummy. When conservatives watch Watters or something they are not just having their 10-minute hate, they are affirming the general act of seizing the moral high ground as a powerful strategy for winning. And people like Glenn Beck waving a baseball bat around acting threatening was him attempting to formalize the escalation of righteous anger into irrational violence and showing his followers how to do it.

This is true, however I feel people are becoming increasingly inured to it. Living in the Deep South you’d hear people go off on righteous screeds regularly. But more recently I find that these screeds are being ignored. Despite what Bidenomics preaches, the economy sucks for many people right now and that’s got people more riled up than anything.
