Worse still, this has gameplay consequences, because it means the Vulture's "I'm being attacked" bark is far, far, FAR easier to miss in the cacophony of noise that is controlling an SC2 battle. Since it's quieter and in a lower tone, it doesn't catch your ear as well. Since Vultures are so fragile, this means that if you even miss it for a split second, you can lose entire squads of Vultures to running into an enemy blob.

That actually sounds like an amazing idea for RTS games, I'd love that in Company of Heroes or Supreme Commander. Did any games actually offer fine-grained audio mixing like that?

Fun trivia, that 'junker' airship model floating around this mission is the original model for what became the Raven! It was originally called the Nomad and was supposed to be visibly building all its gadgets in that open rear bay area before launching them, but Blizzard decided they didn't fit the Terran aesthetic and made the Raven model to replace it.

They fit the BW Terran aesthetic a lot better than the SC2 one at least, imo. I always thought Ravens kinda looked like the Terrans saw the Arbiter and were like "drat we should get those" which is cool though.

Since we are gripping about things, one part of marine depiction in cut scenes really bug me: the wimpy-rear end flashlights they have on their power armor.

Even using just light emitters we had in 2010, if you hook them up to a generator that can move around loving power armor, you should be having something that can light up a small canyon, not those wimpy rear end 1980s handheld flashlights.

Also every time I see Raynor's portrait in the game loading screen, I think that he has two tiny little windshield wipers in there :v:

I know that in SCFAF you could easily make a purely UI mod for that, so no conflicts with ladder and so on.

IIRC the vulture and hellion are the only factory units that don't require a tech lab. Since they both come from optional missions, that means it's possible to finish WOL having your factories unable to build anything without a tech lab attached.

Intermission 15

And here's why Mengsk wanted this Adjutant so bad:

It managed to intercept some rather important transmissions from the Sons of Korhal.

I did, Lieutenant.

This is word-for-word from the end of Terran 08: The Big Push, albeit redone with new voice actors for Duke and Kerrigan. Mengsk and Jim sound like they directly pulled their lines from SC1.

And just to make it even more damning for Mengsk, it caught the exact moment he went full mask off.

>Talk to Hanson.

The backlash will be awful. There'll be riots and uprisings everywhere... But that's just what you want, isn't it?

It's a start.

>Watch news.

>Talk to Tychus.

He left Kerrigan there to die 'cause she called him out on it. Turned out he was just as rotten as the Confederacy ever was.

drat. You sure know how to pick your friends, Jimmy.

No Vultures in the Armory, but we do get some Spider Mines.

>Examine Spider Mines.

>Talk to Swann.

Classic?! I suppose you could call 'em that. 'Course most folks like a bike that don't explode on them when the repeller seals freeze up, or the fuel cells start leaking radioactive waste - but hey, who cares if it's a 'classic', right?

No one likes a smart-rear end, Swann.

>Use Armory Console.

Both Vulture upgrades are focused on Spider Mines. The first makes the Mines better, while the other costs 60K and lets you build more Mines for 15 minerals a pop.

With my current funds I finish off the Siege Tank and get the SCV repair upgrade.

Old.

The Dominion is unveiling a new war machine called the ‘Odin' on Korhal. If we hijack the Odin we can use it to gain access to the UNN studios and broadcast the records of Mengsk's war crimes. The Odin is currently in the testing facility on Valhalla.

New.

The writing hurts. So bad. Who is this panicked buffoon wearing the clothes of a calm, in-control, hyper-aware and brutally crafty politician? That tv script reads like an Onion article.

Also, this stands out much more to me now in 2023 than it did in 2010, but the idea that you can present clear evidence of a charismatic demagogue explicitly and openly lying to people and it will result in their loyal believers turning on them... Haha. Hah. Suddenly I feel so very tired.

I don't think it got brought up yet, but the nuke that Orlan drops on your troops? There's a cloaked Ghost in his base calling it down.

It's usually irrelevant since it's an earlier mission and you probably don't have detection yet, and it's easy enough to pull your forces back. But if you really want, you can push in and kill the Ghost before the nuke drops, cancelling the strike.

It's been so long since I've played the SC2 campaign I can't remember precisely how the mines work anymore - can you still push up and plant spider mines next to cloaked ghosts to kill them before the nuke can go off? You could definitely do this in BW.

It's strange, yes, and it's also quite hard to tell that it's a new recording because they did get a good single line out of the man who did it. Of all people, SC2's Duke is country singer Doug Stone, at least according to Wikipedia -- it couldn't be Jack Ritschel, who voiced Duke in SC1 (along with a bunch of others, most prominently Zeratul), since he'd died in the interim. My best guess is that Doug Stone might have done some work on Wings of Liberty's soundtrack and they got him to do a reading on the line since he was there. WHY they did that, yeah, I can't answer that one.

I will say that this plot twist is an EXTREMELY cool touch and part of what makes Matt's quest line one of the best ones. Mengsk's bending characterization aside (can come up with any number of justifications for that), Matt Horner's quest features some of the strongest callbacks to the plot and elements from SC1, some of the best character scenes, and a dramatic conclusion. It also gives you the most OG units in the Vulture and Wraith, which is probably not coincidental. While it's a little goofy overall compared to the tone set by SC1 and Brood War (between the whole Han-and-Horner plot around Cutthroat and some bits we'll see coming up), it still feels very right. Humiliating and undercutting those in power is very much in line with the aesthetics of SC1's Terrans overall.

Edit:

Frankly, I fail to see how such a registration could be dangerous: the tecnological level should be advanced enough to allow audio-video registration to be virtually indistinguishable from the original: probly audio and video proof would be unusable as legal proof in court.

TBH, right now deepfake and AI technolocy are so advanced that I fear such moment could be not so far for us.

Staltran

Meybe there's metadata that would be more difficult to fake. Or the recording is somehow signed with a confederate private key that's been lost or something. The adjutants seem to be pretty difficult to tamper with, given Raynor and Horner had to resort to a shady specialist to even get the data, so it doesn't seem that far-fetched that where the recording is from would lend it credibility.

Tenebrais
Sep 2, 2011

Wings of Liberty came out in 2010. Deep-fake technology like we have now was still science fiction.

Even if they're just planning to broadcast the audio to the masses, the adjutant itself is evidence of its veracity.

Regardless of whether it would be permissible as evidence or not, it's still damning in the court of public opinion. Even in actual criminal courts, saying something you know will be objected to and then withdrawing the statement is a legal tactic used to worm an idea into the jury's brain. Instruct people to ignore the statement as much as you want, even find the lawyer in contempt if the judge is upset enough about the brazen move, but the damage is done. People are especially eager to believe things that align with their pre-existing views, and I can't imagine Mengsk's diehard supporters are nearly as numerous as those who already have even an inkling about the type of man he is.

Hell, the news interview with Mengsk brought it up, so it’s not like people weren’t already putting the pieces together (it was pretty drat convenient as they mentioned). Release of the adjutant’s info would just be actual evidence towards the theory.

Even if it has an authentication code, laypeople won't know how that poo poo works. Then you'd have a criminal outlaw organization saying "yeah this is totally authentic" and the government saying "nuh uh, that key is made up" and who'd going to be able to verify that? If people don't have the tools on their own, they'd be relying on an independent news organization to do so, for example, which doesn't really work in authoritarian governments.

Tenebrais

I guess this could be one of those things where the ridiculously short timespan since Brood War actually works in the story's favour. The Dominion has only existed for a few years - most likely from most Terrans' perspectives they're still Confederates under military occupation. Raynor is probably right about most people just needing a little push to rebel.

We’ve seen plenty of evidence of this. Raynor hiding out successfully on Mar Sara. His personal assassin, Nova, being willing to work with his enemy. A major corporation directly funneling money to a rebel force. The media network still having enough independence to keep Kate on air.

Mengsk might be in power, but there’s clearly a pretty sizable base of powerful people in key places that are somewhere on the spectrum from “meh, whatever” to “actively undermining his rule”.

NewMars

If starcraft had better writers, they'd lean on the fact that Mengsk's dominion was forged basically as an alliance at the end of the terran campaign: he had to call the planets and terran governments to rally to himself to establish the dominion and merely a year later it'd already been kicked near-fatally by the UED. He had to sell a lot of goodwill to "various interest groups" at the end of broodwar to try ant take down Kerrigan: and he failed. So by all rights he should be less "unchallenged authoritarian dictator" and more "at the centre of a web of influential groups that he has to constantly set against each other to stop them from turning on him."

Yeah, it doesn't really get pointed out enough in the narrative: Mengsk should be stepping on eggshells and constantly watching his back after managing to gently caress up so colossally and spectacularly by the end of BW. Calling in every favor, taking out every loan, etc. from everyone he could and still coming up short should have essentially ended any aspirations for him being emperor of anything more than a planet, and yet... it just never really gets brought up in SC2.

Felinoid

Another book on the fire for bits of Brood War that SC2 doesn't care to address at all. Just put it next to the size of the Confederacy/Dominion, and Raynor's change of heart.

Actually, if he did go on a successful colonization/conquest spree to increase the size of the Dominion, I suppose that might have won him back some clout. Plothole covering for a plothole, foiled by a third plothole (time between games). This is almost fun.

To an extent, I get it if :blizz: thought that having a singular overarching enemy would have had more mass market appeal and less confusion for newcomers than “there are hundreds of different Terran factions that are all variously opposed to/aligned with each other, and Jim really has it out for the husk of an empire that’s responsible for things getting this bad”.

poo poo, I’d even accept something like the Dominion only very marginally remaining as the top dog via continuity of power after everything fractured around them. That could have even tied into the concerns mentioned early on that Mengsk is disproportionately devoting resources to hunting Raynor down, instead of reclaiming his former footholds or maintaining what little he still has.
