Legit it would be interesting if you could figure out how to make a ride-on, bicycle-powered elevator so you could clip your bike wheel on and pedal up a couple of floors. Can't you use pulleys and snatch blocks to multiply torque or am I just high?

lol these car elevator places are going to start burning down due to electrics and lithium being impossible to douse and that will be used to ruin adoption of electrics

you could totally do this, but i imagine it'd be using about as much energy as the entire rest of whatever ride you just took. h ope you left some gas in the tank!

Going up thirty floors is only like four hundred and twenty (:2bong:) feet of climbing. It’s a lot of stairs, but not a lot of elevation change for a ride.

You also have to lift whatever elevator structure there is though, so it’s going to be like climbing with loaded bike.

Elevators are counterweighted, you could absolutely pedal one up and down because you're essentially only moving the passengers.

Well if you want to put it like that, the counterweight is for half of their maximum capacity.

So if you’re a light person on a light bike with no bags, you may get a free ride to the top, but you’re going to have to pedal down from your apartment to ground level, putting in work to lift the difference between your weight and whatever a half‐full elevator comes in at.

Sounds like a gigantic PITA, just have safe parking at the bottom and stairs + disabled access.

Idk I was just musing on it because I like physics and engineering problems but don't have enough actual technical knowledge and was hoping someone would elucidate on whether it's feasible (and they did, thanks!).

I worked briefly as concierge security for an under-construction (but already lived-in on some floors) condo downtown. I was really surprised to see that in lieu of a parking garage it had two floors of enormous bicycle parking rooms. Unfortunately they were sparsely used.

yeah most people won't want to buy bikes if they don't have safe, convenient places to keep them, but then still won't actually ride bikes often unles the streets and infrastructure is safe enough

The bike room at my previous apartment building was overflowing to the point of being unusable. Bikes were literally piled up in a heap. Building management made some vague attempts to get rid of abandoned bikes every June, but by the time they removed any at all the season was almost over. I just kept my bike on my balcony despite constant notices that this was somehow illegal.

Cyclists were also not given garage door openers, so to get your bike you had to take the elevator down to the garage, get your bike, then take the elevator back up to the ground floor. There were only three elevators and one was almost always broken, so it could take 10-15 minutes to get your bike out at peak times. For some reason management didn't see a problem with this.
