Yeah Fortnite can be pretty drat locked down tbh.

Also I seem to recall them saying fortnite is still growing it’s user base and had its best year ever player count wise.

they dont do it to stuff like league of legends but theyve definitely done it to some gacha games. there's also been some really shady scenarios involving them, like a chinese gaming site owned by tencent had a big poll of the best f2p games.

These were the vote counts right before the poll ended. Top 3 are Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact, and Tears of Themis, all by MiHoYo. Number 4 is a game owned by TenCent.

Here's what the results were published as. Tears of Themis got wiped off and Honkai got booted down to 3rd to make room for Tencent's game.

A lot of the 'genshin impact is a shameless breath of the wild clone!!' reporting that got spread throughout the western gaming sphere was also caused by Tencent. Tencent tried to buy Mihoyo but the deal fell through so they smeared them on their social media. That isn't a conspiracy, they literally posted promoted articles on sites they owned with that.

The idea that any hatred of tencent is purely anti-chinese racism is pretty silly. There's all sorts of complaints about them on the Chinese internet.

I guess I mean people say the same thing about Google/Facebook/Every tech company. Also Tencent came to power it has because WeChat was willing to play ball with Chinese Government's censorship and information gathering moreso than the social media platforms, I think there is more than "no evidence" out there that they are malicious.

I think you know I'm not saying it's purely racism nor am I saying they are remotely clean of bullshit, they're a huge tech company, they are by definition gonna be Up To Some poo poo. It was probably a mistake to tie them in particular into my personal gripe about gaming spaces being full of people just regurgitating stuff they never bother to check themselves but sometimes you gotta yell into a void.

I'm not saying Tencent isn't doing shady poo poo but it seems to get a lot more attention warranted or not because it's a Chinese company. People will go out of there way to complain about a game being developed by a studio owned by Tencent.

the thing is tencent does have extremely strong ties to the chinese government. conflating them 100% is inaccurate, tencent isn't literally a government body, but of china's gaming companies they are definitely the one that toes the government line the most. by comparison, there's a reason mihoyo moved its headquarters to singapore.

I'm curious how many devs are opting out of the Epic cash because "here's a guaranteed wad of money up front" may not offset the whole "tiny little nothing potential audience" thing, with games selling more in their first few days on Steam than in the entire run-up period on Epic.

Then again, guaranteed money. The studio behind Phoenix Point said that they'd be solvent for a few years even if they didn't sell a single copy of the game thanks to the Epic money, as I recall.

by all indications, Epic all but stopped offering the big upfront moneyhats some time ago, presumably because EGS-exclusive games just weren't selling enough to justify the expense. the main thing they currently seem to be offering devs instead is the First Run Program, which gives EGS exclusives 100% of revenue (as opposed to the usual 88%) for the first six months of exclusivity but no money up front; it's fairly safe to say that this is not a very appealing offer, since PC gamers have made their willingness to wait for Steam releases very clear and 100% of next to nothing in sales isn't much more than 88% of next to nothing.

Remedy's official website lists two Epic-published games: Alan Wake 2 and Alan Wake 1 Remastered, which came out a while back.

Of the rest of their upcoming release palette, Max Payne 1+2 Remake is Rockstar, 505 Games has Control 2 and a Control spinoff, and there's a live-action game with no publisher listed. Their latest financial report states they have two other games in the works for a total of five, but no details are listed.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

I don't know about Tencent and the morality of dev cuts, but EGS pissed me off years ago when they made Metro: Exodus a EGS exclusive relatively last minute. There was a window where if you hurried the gently caress up you could pre-order it on Steam, and I did that so I wasn't even materially harmed, but it just annoyed the piss out of me. Some publisher making a title exclusive to their launcher? I get that. I've got an ubi launcher, I've got the GoG launcher, I've even got the loving Amazon Games launcher kicking around from all the free poo poo they've given me for having prime. But EGS buying exclusives just annoyed me, and I'm a petty nerd so I've stayed away from the storefront ever since.
