Before COVID I worked in one of the US' largest library systems at the downtown/main branch in a major city, and these questions are not at all out of sorts for the sort of emailed/called-in questions I'd answer when I did my shift in the Reference section. There are a lot of (mostly older) people who still use the library this way, and the questions can be absolutely wild.

I have noticed that most US and bad UK websites set-up the opt-out of cookies options so obnoxiously that you functionally can't do so.
Stuff like having to individually toggle hundreds of switches to disable them, or worse, having to visit the 100's of outside vendors own websites to see their cookie policies.

Good websites have an accept all/deny all toggle for both standard marketing and "legitimate interest" cookies. If your site doesn't have that, I'm not staying.

Oh, uh, I don't know how they work where you are, but here the point of the popup is that it's required to have an option to click to disable all the tracking poo poo. That's kind of the whole point. It's not just to tell you hi, cookies exist.

Doing that is a violation of the requirements, it needs to be as easy to say "gently caress you no" as it is to say "yes please steal my identity thank you". Anyway, a gift (also available for chrome etc):

This sounds amazing, but I can't get it to work :( I installed it and restarted FF, but even in private windows, the cookie pop-ups are unchanged - I tried dailymail.co.uk because I know their cookie opt-out poo poo is awful

Huh, weird. That's the exact version I'm running. Conflict with another addon maybe? Or, silly question, is it turned on? If you're using firefox then right-click the extension, click "manage extension", and make sure the toggle in the top right by the three dots is enabled.

e: also check the options for the addon itself and make sure it's downloaded the rules list.

It's definitely turned on, and the rules list has been downloaded so it's probably conflict with another extension - I'll do a bit of rummaging and see what happens :)

I've got the consentomatic + cookie autodelete for maximum decookieing

e: it's incredibly jarring whenever I go to look at anything on my work computer because I've so many "just let me read the god drat page" addons that being exposed to internet protected only by a corporate firewall is horrifying
