It doesn't even need to be good art, it's just getting shoved in a duffle bag anyways.

Reach for the moon!
The galleries don't match the descriptions of what feature in them. It sucks because the descriptions pose thematic ideas I'd like to see drawn by an artist. "What is left behind when the pursuit of shallowness reaches its end?" in the purple gallery rocks and fits Payday really well.

But the paintings in the purple gallery...

It's just some AI generated fake people, no subject matter to relate them to that. Meanwhile the sculptures...

Actually correspond to the subject, featuring ivory and other rare materials with holes cut into them, which is what you do to the glass in that heist to collect the paintings.

edit: Hell, this circular statue is in most of the galleries and fits all of them (Joy, Greed, Envy, Repurposing old works) and I bet it was made by someone with an Artstation!

Required by his programming!
not to be a douche about this, but are you certain they are AI-generated? if so, that's actually a big deal because steam has pre-emptively banned generative AI hookups and outputs over concerns about copyright stuff, which has been intensified by US courts more or less holding that generative AI outputs cannot be copyrighted, even if you conclusively hold all the copyright to the inputs.

if you are certain they are AI generated you should probably lodge a steam ticket.

from the glance at the screenshots i can't really tell, that just looks like the same bullshit from art gallery in PD2, some random garbage asset that they just sort of threw in there as an afterthought because frankly the art itself isn't the point.

I'd have to see then in person but running some photos of the devs and their spouses through a filter and putting it in the game as background photos is a tale as old as time, it could just be that.

I did confirm that you can hit civilians with a melee attack once to instantly drop them into tie-up state, so I guess that's the reason for the weak melee attack.

Yeah I looked at some of the paintings last night and they definitely seem like AI. They have that weird perspective shift on the edges of objects that you see a lot with AI art. It's possible that is was painted by hand like that but it'd be a really bad job if they did because it looks like poo poo.

I don't think there is any way to report it so nothing is going to happen but it's a red flag that the studio is doing stuff like this.

E. I'm not sure I like the new system of getting xp through challenges. Right now when it's just "complete level on normal" level of progression it's fine, but I feel like in a month it's going to be achievement grubbing of the worst kind. Sorting lobbies by loud or stealth could go a long way but it'll still be a mess.

Kinda funny to see how people are not aware of the new systems. I just had a G&S mission where someone alerted a guard. One of the pubs freaked out, trying to get us to restart, then rage quit. They didn't know that guards will just escort you out of a private area and we finished the rest of the mission just fine.

Overall, I'm hopefully optimistic. As fun as it was to rack up 200+ kills in PD2, I'm kind of welcoming the return to a more subdued and zoomed-in (at the moment) experience. It feels like I'm doing more heisting, as opposed to just playing a horde shooter that occasionally throws a hurdle at me.

Yeah, I have not played the game out of Beta yet but knowing I'm pretty much only going to be playing this with two friends who I played a shitload of PD2 with I'm just kind of ignoring all the making GBS threads-on-the-game going on seemingly everywhere I look. I'm really excited about the changes to this.

I'm still not entirely sure how this works, because sometimes they will do that while other times they want to arrest you. I believe it is largely due to if you try to evade them, but it may be dependent on how deep you are into the map.

The way they made it sound in the dev talk was that much like Hitman there are certain areas that are an immediate alert versus others that you get escorted out of. I assume if you get spotted inside the vault or something that they're not going to walk you out. It would be nice to have an indication though of which zones will cause immediate alerts.

Plan Z

I do have some qualms, but for positivity's sake:

-Objectives feel better in general. Drills, hacks, and the like aren't as long, keeping you focused on what's at hand.

-Toning down the combat rewards teamplay more. You're not left with one or more players on killing sprees while everyone else does the grunt work.

-I like the hostage trading system quite a bit. Buying that extra minute or so is really helpful.

-Grabbing loot feels more meaningful. That extra bag or so can be difficult but worth it once you get back to the store menus.

-Stunning cops can be just as useful as killing them, whether it's taking some heat off of yourself or helping a subdued ally.

-The changing up of some mechanics has taken a lot of the chaff out of the skill menu.

-The stealth systems are about ten million times better, full stop. There are too many improvements to name without posting several paragraphs.

My criticisms kind of come in the form of "I don't quite know yet" or things that could easily be improved by patches or modding. The first thing I noticed is that the in-game UI feels less responsive. PD2's prompts would snap up immediately with text that was noticeable in my periphery, followed by that satisfying circle to show you're working on an objective. Now, the prompts are quite small and feel mushy. I feel like interactions could just be more responsive. I'd also like to specify whether I want to do a mission loud or stealth. I don't know if I'm a fan of the new armor system. I'll have to level up my character and see what happens on different difficulties. The same goes for the fact that I don't know if I miss the deck building system yet. I wish they'd kept some of the other heisters like Sydney or Clover, as Joy and Pearl don't really do it for me.

Also, check your key bindings when you start playing. I estimate that 90% of my thrown grenades have been complete accidents.

They do, though? Unless they switched it from the beta, it should say across the top something like Public Area or Private Area or Secure Area. Private Areas, you get escorted out of. Secure Areas (in red too) are your traditional "get caught and heist goes loud" zones.

Yeah that's the thing, it makes sense for a vault to be an instant arrest zone, but if I'm up in someone's office or on the roof it's not clear. I saw two people yesterday get escorted out of the back hallways of the first bank but when they made it back to the public area they just got handcuffed anyways.

Yeah, that's still how it works. I think the thing that throws people off is that, if you get spotted in a Private area, a radius circle appears around the alert guard and if you leave that radius, then they'll try to arrest you rather than escort you out.

The lack of directions in Under the Surface feels like poo poo. I tried it with bots on normal and just gave up about a half an hour in. Zero indication from shade or the UI what you’re supposed to do. There was a brief mention of shining a UV light at some paintings? Is that something I press a key for, or a piece of equipment? Also, every time I looked at the helicopter my frames would plummet for some reason. Bad map but it could be fixed.

I haven’t played the last 2, but the rest seem fine so far. This game feels much more momentum focused so cleaning up the UI and directions would do wonders.

Is there a limit on the times you can get escorted out vs arrested? And if you get arrested nothing bad happens besides not being able to help case anymore?

Thought the radius was visible enough and the intent was clear with the guard talking. Huh.

That does remind me though: Is touching guard butts for keycards a random chance to not alert? Or is it always non-alerting, despite the red symbol?

padijun posted:

I think it's one escort per unique guard. Unless something changed. If the same guard sees you again, you get arrested.

It's badly explained, but it's the same thing as the keypads where it automatically turns on when you look at something it is relevant for. Keypads show fingerprints, the correct painting will show a bloodspray across the front of it.

It makes sense after you do it once but the problem is that you need to open multiple galleries to find the right one, and it's a natural response (like I had, and you just described) to assume that you simply aren't using the UV light correctly when every painting you see doesn't have the spray on it. Since you need a new QR code to open every gallery up it doesn't encourage people to run around and go "oh it works on this painting and not the others, this must be how the system works."

There's a lot of weird contrivance with the tech in the game. Why can QR codes only be used once? Why does hacking something mean standing in rings places randomly around the level?

The “stand here to hack” points are pretty bad too since the progress bar is easy to miss if you aren’t looking at your feet from the right angle, but even randos got that part eventually. Definitely going to memorize all smartphone locations on that map before I play it again though

The red symbol just means you're doing something illegal; as long as it doesn't say "Observed" under the red symbol, you're good to go

fwiw you should always know which galleries to open because the computer in the managers office tells you, based on the artist. We did a run on hard yesterday and we had to open 3 and 6 and 5 and 7 I think, so we needed to find 4 total phones and pick the lock into the server room.
