Well, I was able to get into a game, but it ran at like 10 fps so it was virtually unplayable. Not sure what's up with that, seemed to run fine during the tutorial.

I got it running on a 970 on Medium settings for two bot heists.

Nu-Dozers seem tough as balls. At least with against the starting Car-4.

Stealth certainly feels more forgiving now. Messed up and got spotted a few times but we still managed to salvage each situation, until one of us accidentally threw a grenade into a pile of hostages because of the changed controls. :supaburn:

First time back cop clicking in years, and I have to say Payday 3 was a ton of fun once I actually managed to get into a game this morning. Seems like a solid foundation for more Payday.

Things got much better once I managed to get into a game with more that just the rawest of Pubs! Cool that game pass is getting people to try it out at least.

Been a good long while since I touched Payday 2, but yeah I'm also feeling like the cops are a fair bit more dangerous in 3, even just on normal. They can take a fair few hits and seem a lot more mobile.

Fellow goon ACPaco made this when the whole lootbox brouhaha went down back in 2015. Still applies now almost a decade later, gift of Apollo. I will ride or die to the end for Almir however.

Now enjoy too many words.

I do feel bad for the developers because, outside of armchair quaterbacking, an outage was inevitable. Seems like servers are back online at least.

I slopped through the missions with Bots and it's pretty great. Looking forward to playing with others as some of the initial learning curve winds down.

I think the whinging about wanting Crime.net or wanting an offline mode back are missing the forest for the trees in some complaints. I will agree, however, that a "I don't care, give me a mission" matchmake option with a binary filter for "Find me guys from the start looking to sneak or We're going hog wild" would be nice too. Having separate hoppers from each mission and difficulty seems like a launch day "screw it, we gotta get this out" type oversight.

I'd also support harsh penalties for leaving a match in progress, like if you kill civvies and leave it should deduct from your account personal account or eliminate XP you previously gained from challenges if you're really acting annoying. We're professionals and the game gives you all the tools to need to maintain that, so see your bad situation through to the end. I think it's bad enough they have a "vote to restart" option in there - that should only be present for invite/friend only lobbies with no join in progress. Hopefully they can also keep a better chokehold on modding into the future to kneecap how silly the cheat huds and other nonsense became.

Beyond that, I miss nothing from Crime.net and the mess the skill system/difficult mess of Payday 2. The game was at it's best from 2013-2015 to me (around the release of the diamond) as once they started going overboard with the skill cards and boringly punishing difficulties, I checked out. I felt later maps didn't balance heist complexity and length as well either, as missions became Destiny raid style guesswork to figure out next steps while the number of cops went from silly to a just bizarre slog even on lower skills.

I like here how the game assumes you're going to gently caress up and makes combat doable even with a setup more suitable for sneaking. I also enjoy how most of the weapons have the stats of "generally fine if you like it" compared to the prior game's boring mess of RPGish slop. The difficulty also seems balanced better, especially compared to the 2013 prequel. I've ground out to around 53 from early access and the unlocks/levels ups I have are slowing down, which is to be expected since I'm abusing the system by running the early missions with bots. I'm looking forward to trying the later missions, but don't want to join lobbies where its just "stealth failed. RESTART RESTART!!!" over and over. That'll likely go away in a few weeks.

Hopefully they expand the ult weapon selection at least. They're not lying when they showed in the initial reveal trailer the launcher and sniper at play, but it did set an expectation for more. On the flip side, I appreciate having no melee options. Keep it that way, they were always a bad addition.

I'll also give full credit to the soundtrack. The composer had a hard challenge to follow up Viklund and he absolutely nailed it.

That said, this feels like a game made in 18 months as a minimum viable product. The prior game did things I liked, such as having a variety of quick hit missions to balance out the longer ones in addition to the never really fulfilled promise of more dynamic multistage heists. Framing Frames, Rats and Election Day had some fun dynamic elements (especially hot election day) to them, but Overkill ultimately seemed to move away from those along with the community.

If this game had come out in 2015-16 (when it was likely supposed to) this would have been fantastic. Here, it's good but comes from a team seemingly without any of the prior game's history or hard learned lessons behind it. It's an impossible ask I'm making so I'm not upset or really disappointed, just a thought exercise about how a sequel is supposed to follow up a game with almost a decade in development for better and worse. Games need iterative sequels more often, but that doesn't support current player expectations over the past decade.

For example of an odd change - why did they give up the color system for identifying other players in the session? Previously you could just see who was who by color, but here they have generic mugs of the character you and your teammates are playing as wasting real estate. Feels almost like a "best practices" thing picked up from F2P games with purchasable characters. Bummer they got rid of the "ASSAULT LINE DON'T CROSS" stylized bit of HUD, big miss with something they could have built upon.

Mental masturbation exercise here, but I would have enjoyed a game where you could create your own character and would have had to build up to a grander heist over a series of smaller jobs - a more dynamic approach the later GTA Online levels like the Casino and Island took, albeit limited by their own 2013 engine. Ironically, that Crime City game seemed closer to what I had assumed PD3 would have been but execution ultimately means everything. I also think this focus on being in a single location, NYC this time, seems oddly limiting as well. I don't need to know where we run off to after the mission and having us go on worldwide capers would be neat. If they are going to lean into a setting, I would have wanted them to actually have us use it - like maybe we'd need to plot a getaway route or something. Again, makes sense for where the premise is at this point, but it feels limiting.

I do want to believe the game is better balanced for expansion from the jump, however, especially since they seemingly have a tech pipeline now to support new additions. I just hope they don't make the live service aspects too oppressive following this opening week (they will) and stick with the a la carte dlc model instead of season passes and reheated "free" additions we're supposed to act grateful for.

Thanks for the writeup - I haven't bought it yet and am still waiting to see if it looks like this will have lasting power before I do. Agreed on this point, though. OK/Starbreeze is not a massive studio, and can't throw infinite resources at this. When companies the size of ABK have launch day issues with login/matchmaking servers, it's really difficult to be too upset with others for having similar issues.

I am probably a little dismissive with that statement on melee, but if they add them I'd like them to at least be thematic like the money slap is. I didn't mind the brass knuckles, tazer, etc. It was stuff like the knives or swords that just rubbed me the wrong way since, you know, they could probably follow us back from the crime scene due to the viscera... wait now there's a crossover game. These are my same thoughts and worries, which is why I'm sort of excited for launch and playing early and suspect, like Payday 2, I'll end up dropping the game in disgust at some point. I feel like Payday 2's arc went from "Wow, cool mutlistage heights, stealth options, etc." to "We need harder and harder difficulties, more cops, brute force, brute force, brute force." It's kind of inevitable and you see it in other games, too. The core population keeps playing and grinds their nose against the game until there's nothing left, finding the fastest and easiest ways to grind out whatever progression they're grinding. I don't hate progression in Payday, Payday 3 seems like it'll be good, too, but I want cool heists where you can plan, execute, and try to be slick and efficient - loud or quiet - instead of just learning "We all get heavy armor, sit in these 2 corners, and then move the bags between waves, because thats how we beat OVERKILLDICKPUNCH+ difficulty and this mission has the best payout."

From folks' descriptions of the problems they were having with matchmaking, it didn't seem like a capacity issue - it seemed like something on the software side. I have a few guesses but they are purely guesses.

Edit: That's not to say there wasn't a capacity issue as well!

Imo this is something that isn't unique to payday and is common on any game where heavy optimization is something that is possible. If you're trying to grind up through the levels then you are going to naturally do it in largely the most effective way, even if that means running the same map 500 times. That's likely why they put in the challenges in PD3, although people are pissed because it means they don't get xp for regular runs.

Like in most games the solution to grind is just not to grind and to play the maps that sound fun, but that's not how it really goes down in reality a lot of times. If you're playing every single day eventually what is bringing you back is grind.

Sure, I guess a better way to say it is "I wish they rewarded the way I wanted to play more than just making more cops and more special cops show up as the difficulty moderator." I enjoy a bit of grinding and progressing, I don't like 'new content' being, 'but what if it was just more bullshit than it used to be?'

Assuming PD3 is popular enough to justify it, I have little doubt that they will at some point release DLC for most of the PD2 heists - certainly the early/popular ones. If I had to guess, the Transport and Bomb heists will get skipped, Alesso, Hotline, Goat Sim, etc. may get skipped depending on how the licensing contracts were set up.
