I think it's just because there isn't a big market for modern rock. People young enough to seek out new music aren't tuning in to rock music in particularly large numbers and the people that are interested in it are interested in either the rock music that was popular when they were young, the rock music that was playing on classic rock stations when they were young, or they're kids listening to what was new when we were young for the same reasons people in our generation listened to classic rock when we were young. I went to college for music production and sat in on a lecture with my alma mater a few years back because they were demoing some cool equipment and everything every kid in that program was into was something like chillwave, downtempo, or lofi girl poo poo. Every single one.

Right. I think it's related to the death of (music-based) subculture in general, and it's been a long time coming. I was born in 1990, and in my Flemish high school in the mid-2000s I was always one of the few who were specifically into rock (in my case, punk and related genres). Most people just didn't seem to feel very strongly about music either way, in contrast to previous generations. It's vaguely sad, but it does make sense, with the advent of the Internet especially you have so many options for entertainment, there's no longer that need to make music a central part of your identity. There's been a minor resurgence of rock in the mainstream in the past few years, with Machine Gun Kelly of all people releasing a well-received pop-punk album. I guess you also have evergreen bands like Paramore that are still popular with the youngsters (particularly teenage girls, which is cool because that's an underrepresented demographic within the genre). I probably would have scoffed at these back when I was an insufferable punker-than-thou teenager, but in 2023 I'm just glad to hear guitars on the radio. Wait which thread am I in

Potions of aggressive atheism. Because after you've roll led your eyes at someone begging magic to set you on fire you spring up to them and disembowel them with a sword.

I bought a really sick old Pioneer amp with a built in radio tuner and once in a while I get the urge to click it on and just turn that big ol' knob and there is just absolutely loving nothing. Like there are very few stations in general and it's mostly pop country or top 40 stuff. This is in a college town that used to have a pretty decent college radio station that played unusual stuff but I can't find them now

I'm fortunate enough to have two independent radio stations in my area that I listen to.
