Everyone should play DUKE games.

:dukedog:
Yeah I loving love Alien stuff but I went into Prometheus just assuming if it's like 100 years before Alien or whatever how connected in anyway is it really going to be story wise/thematically. I know there were folks disappointed that it wasn't just the cast looking at the camera reading the Colonial Marines Technical Manual aloud but I do notice more recently people seem warmed up to it more so I think a slight reevaluation of it did happen.

There'll always "hurr why not run side ways from big UFO movie bad"* people but that's true of any sci-fi/fantasy thing and people can like or hate whatever.

*Even though the characters literally do this in the movie

Prometheus connected to alien perfectly to me because it was set in a spooky spaceship and had monsters and it all happened because of a lovely company with the name Weyland in it. That’s all I needed and wanted

Was David’s horror and outrage at Oram killing his pet science project the only time in either film he’s really demonstrative, really expresses any emotion

Yeah, every interaction he has with Holloway he's pretty clearly annoyed, disappointed or angry and Holloway's such a dunce he doesn't even notice. Especially "Can you imagine how disappointing it would be for you to hear the same thing from your creator?"

I watched a behind-the-scenes doc where Ridley said that he specifically cast Green because he was so intelligent, and needed that intelligence to come across in Holloway. I, however, think that Green is terrific casting because he plays Holloway as a huge douchey dolt who you are totally fine watching David give eyeworms and monster cum to.

Speaking of Logan Marshal Green, I remember saying he and the guy who played Dario in Game of Thrones, Michael Huisman, looked a bit alike, and was pleasantly surprised when they were both cast in the Invitation together. Now someone has to cast both those two and Tom Hardy in the same thing to play triplets in something.

who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
I pretty much only see positive stuff about Prometheus nowadays. I mean, even at the time, it was a massive financial success with good reviews including a 4/4 from Ebert

If people don't like that movie they don't like that movie, but I think much of the discourse around it being negative online came from it being peak Cinema Sins, Movie Mistakes and RLM era, where an inordinate amount of attention was being given to supposed plot holes or characters doing dumb things, which is not illegitimate to care about, but is a boring way to critique movies. YouTube criticism these days from some creators is honestly a lot closer to the quality of professional film criticism, which just wasn't the case back then, and I think it got dogpiled a lot from a certain lens

Also I never really thought about it til now how much Requiem and Covenant do the same thing of just saying "yeah yeah gently caress all that plot origin stuff, we just want an alien slasher movie"

I still wish we got whatever the gently caress Paradise would have been

Requiem is clearly a case of a sequel responding to the criticisms of the original by going in the opposite direction. I know he's kind of a punchline but I don't hate Paul WS Anderson. He tried to give Mortal Kombat and AVP a cohesive storyline. MK95 was a massive success to the point the games themselves took story and character ideas from it. AVP...not so much. I think pretty much everyone hated the characters in it and felt we didn't get enough time with the titular aliens and predators. So Requiem gave us a badass Pred massacring his way through alien hordes and dicing up slasher victim meatbag heroes.

Maybe they both missed the mark but I still prefer seeing a cool predator doing cool things to...whatever AVP was trying for.

If you want to see a Predator doing cool things, AVP:R won’t work for you either. You can’t see poo poo in that movie! Because the lighting is so dark!

If you're into Ridley Scott Scifi stuff, big recommend for S1 of Raised By Wolves. I haven't watched S2 (S1 has a satisfying conclusion and I've heard S2 is weak) but that first season is very much in the same vein as Prometheus/Covenant.

my comic shop was doing a pretty big sale so decided to pick up the first five issues of the marvel Alien and Predator comics, only to find out when I finally cracked them open to read that they’ve already released multiple mini series with multiple variant covers and nothing to discern which is which on the covers so I got four incomplete stories. Guess I’m never going to finish reading or buying another one of these bait and switch books.

I suppose it depends on your definition of gore? Is it anything violent? Or are we only considering “blood and guts” stuff? If it’s the latter, I can’t recall many of those moments in Prometheus. In fact, there are many horrifying, violent deaths, but the bloodiest bits are the “births” of the trilobite and the deacon. Which is kind of interesting on it’s own I think.

The next closest thing is David getting his head removed but the intensity of that scene is dialed back by him being an android.

Oh you should definitely watch S2 of Raised by Wolves if you enjoyed the first season. It just escalates and escalates the wonderful batshit insanity and arrives at an equally weird and satisfying conclusion.

I think the most underrated is Milburn & Fifield getting hosed up. The hammerpede violating Milburn's throat and Fifield falling into the goo followed by that excellent shot of his helmet melting onto his face is really well done and quite gruesome. Just a shame they didn't stick with the original Fifield design for when he returns to the ship since the xeno-ish look seems more visually fitting given what happened with the helmet compared to the crispy zombie look imo.

The Alien comic I read was alright, albeit in an extremely safe Alien story kind of way. The Predator comic was real bad. It was about this girl who at like age 8 was left stranded entirely alone on a distant planet after her family was killed by Predators, so she decided to kill all the Predators and despite being a child stranded by herself in the middle of nowhere, she learned how to reverse-engineer Predator technology and hunt Predators so that by the time the series starts ten years later, she has killed dozens of Predators in hand to hand combat.

The marvel Alien comics by Philip Kennedy Johnson start out as kind of retreading well worn Dark Horse story beats but each arc does something a bit different, expands the universe in interesting ways. Then Declan Shalvey took over and his first arc is once again something that wouldn't be out of place in Dark Horse.

They're all fine really, perfectly decent Alien comics, but I'd read Revival and Icarus over the other currently existing arcs.

Agreed on both their deaths being the most brutal and on the original Fifield design. Part of that gruesomeness comes from the fact they are left conscious yet incapacitated in awful ways until who knows when.

However, I do think Holloway would have suffered the worst fate if not for the mercy of the flamethrower. I imagine it would have been a lot like that poor Japanese man they kept alive to study while his body disintegrated at a molecular level from the massive dose of radiation he was exposed to.

With the added horror of not being in a medically induced coma and potentially have part of your body mutate, separate from you, and start attacking other parts of you.
