Wasn't this build previously doing like 30k golem dps while providing alac? That's around the bottom end of pure dps numbers, hardly hanging by a thread. Fair! Mostly relaying what a scourge-enjoying friend was saying, which is that it'll feel these changes more since it does significantly less damage than the pure dps version, unlike a lot of other boon dps these days. I think I've been spoiled by quickness herald being so ridiculously strong, hah.

While I agree there's no way they churned out a response to a YT video that quickly, but LazyPeon is like...one of the largest MMO content creators. He's been around forever, too.

I'm sure people at AN definitely at least watched his video and took note of things. Some stuff you just can't help though - like not opening his mail for his free relics, lol.

Scourge received a big haircut. There were some other general nerfs, but it looks like Herald is still super strong as an offensive boon support. In other words, Herald doesn't need concentration gear and can still pump out boons with ease.

They didn't mess with Alac Heal Druid, thankfully. That's all I really care about. Leave us alone and let us keep healing.

Ele/Catalyst/Weaver got nerfed a bit.

Warrior got nerfed because Anet is gonna Anet. Sorry Warrior mains, you didn't deserve it.

Overall, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more balance updates, this was a relatively small patch.

The biggest addition is that there's a WvW equipment vendor now, and you can buy exotic, fully stat selectable gear for WvW tokens and like, 1 gold. Ridiculously good deal. You can get Harrier, Ritualist, Viper, etc. - all the expansion gear for very cheap. That includes stat selectable jewelry, too.

Here's Teapot's stream, he's doing a full balance patch notes breakdown:

Hello, I am a new player, and I was wondering how much does weapon choice impact damage done/chances you're likely to get into an instance group, and how often do the 'meta' weapons change in this game? Looking up guides it made me sad to see that none of the builds for several classes involved weapons I was enjoying levelling.

For those looking for easy money, Rifts are in Verdant brink and each rift is 2 fast events and it's Shiny Bauble week in VB, so just spamming rifts as fast as possible will get you a lot of raw gold and you can turn the essence into motivations to sell on the tp for extra gold.

Honestly I'd say play what you want first, your enjoyment is the priority, and unless it's "serious" content like a challenge mode strike mission, tier 4 fractals/CMs, raids, etc. you should be okay. You can do most entry/lower tier fractals/dungeons/strikes using whatever you wish.

There's a brand new vendor in WvW who sells fully stat selectable exotic gear, you can experiment with gearing out your character that way. I dunno if you're into WvW/PvP, but it's a cheap way to fully gear out a character for very little gold. Armor, weapons, jewelry - all of it is fully stat selectable.

Meta weapons change fairly often, at least with the latest patch(es). They'll probably continue to be tweaked, some of the weapons are busted. Eventually weapon options will open up 100% and we'll have pistol Guardian in future patches.

There's a 3rd party add-on DPS meter called ArcDPS, but nothing in-game to monitor your performance. Instead, you have to go to a training golem and beat it up in a very particular way to find out your DPS. When people do this, they refer to it as the class benchmark (even though it's 100% unrealistic that a boss is going to sit there and perform no attacks/mechanics and let you smash it up while staying stationary). All it does is reveal the top end potential of a build/equipment combo and what is possible as their ceiling of damage.

In reality, though, following mechanics, knowing how to stay alive, dodge, not stand in red circles, ressing folks who fall down, and listening to the squad/commander is always the priority and will likely get you invited back to groups.

If someone is whining about your DPS and you're just having fun blasting through normal strike missions, they're probably an rear end in a top hat, and someone you don't want to group with. Unfortunately you'll come across that from time to time, but most people are inclusive and welcoming of new players. Under LFG, look for content listed under "Training" and not "Experienced" and try that to start.

Before max level, don't worry about it, at all. And bear in mind dungeons were abandoned at release, so the experience will be... rough. Once you hit max level, you will unlock elite specialisations (assuming you have the expansions) which will often change how your character works in some fundamental fashion.

In most groups no-one is going to care about your build/gear/damage output. You might run into issues if you join an experienced group and are doing less damage than the healers. Which is actually a possibility if you're using a bad weapon for your build.

Obviously, your first 5 abilities come from your weapon type, so it's not like some other games where it only has a minor impact. My advice to new players would be to find a build on a good site, e.g. hardstuck or snowcrows, and use the weapon it suggests. You can absolutely run non-meta builds and do fine in this game, because most of the content (including the very newest) is not built around the level of power players have now, but starting out, I'd at least try something you know will work well before trying your own thing. If only as a point of comparison.

Meta builds don't change that often, and frequently they still work when they fall out of favour, it's just that other builds become more effective, or fit better into group compositions. There has recently been a shake-up due to weapon mastery, and there will be another in about 6 months.

In open-world content, I can pretty much guarantee you will do more damage than 75% of the players you encounter, since you're using resources outside the game to learn about it.

Generally per class there will be a few weapons that are best in slot for power / condi / support, but sometimes other weapons are not far enough behind it to matter much (e.x. longbow on power guardian is close enough to sword+focus to still be viable). Also, even in instanced content, it's rare for people to actually play at a skill level that making a suboptimal choice will make too much of a difference.

Weapon choice has a big impact. The biggest thing is that some weapons are primarily strike damage, while others are primarily DoT/condi. Even beyond that, some just have higher DPS or better synergies.

The community has a big focus on optimal and not just viable, so it might be hard to find direction on using an off-meta weapon.

It shouldn't affect you being able to find groups for instanced content, but you'll probably want to be able to explain your weapon choice if you're doing raid training and using an off-meta.

Meta weapons don't change very frequently, but there are big shakeups with the new weapon master training and a new weapon being added for each class soon.

Hmm, those are a little trickier for instanced pve! Usually instanced content doesn't value ranged as much, because you often have easy access to melee the boss and need to stick close to get boons and healing.
However, if you haven't looked into pvp or world vs world yet, you might want to check it out-- often weapons that don't see a lot of use in pve have a much stronger niche in pvp modes.
Pistols in a few configurations see some use there as dueling / harassing weapons, and shortbow is a perennial favorite too for mobility. Rev hammer is fantastic for big group wvw fights where you get to basically play like an artillery piece.

Scourge I couldn't get into on the basis that the million f-keys aren't viable on a controller set-up without actually paying for a whole program, and I'm not devoted enough to DPS to make the switch from core Condi/Minion. I can still kill things with relative ease running with pistol/dagger and when the power players get shredded I'll be there to pick their asses back up.

I'd be pissed as hell if I was playing Scourge tho. Whole list reads like 'we heard someone somewhere was having fun in PvE, and we simply cannot have that.'

Also, question: per the discussion on the fancy stats, does Expertise actually matter or is it a fake stat I should ignore, because I have been switching between Carrion and Viper sets to see if I can spot the difference and I honestly cannot.

Expertise is huge to the point it can flat out double the damage done by your DoTs when fully invested. Playing a condi build without it is comparable damage wise to playing a power build and just not getting any crit chance

Berserker is among the cheapest but it depends a lot on the character class and can leave you with a glass cannon you can't manage if you, like me, have poor coordination.

EDIT: TBH one of the best things about leveling normally is getting all the lowbie mats and being able to kit yourself out to the point that you're able to make your own gear once you hit 80. Making exotics ain't cheap either, but the recipes for the "basic" poo poo usually are a bit cheaper by comparison, and most of the required mats aren't too difficult to grind for. Unlike Viper, which requires praying for black diamond drops if you don't feel like spending 7-10g per item on the TP.

If you have enough karma there are a few vendors on the Orr maps who sell exotics for karma, the ones sitting on the waypoint for the end dungeon is where I go when I'm broke on gold but have karma to spare. You don't get to choose the stats though, just what they happen to have there. Also if you map complete any level 80 map you'll get a bit of exotic gear (random but could be worth selling if not useful). Plus chance of key & some mats. I think there are a some story rewards that also offer exotic gear but I forget which ones. Also worth noting any event that loads you up with rare bags or unidentified rare gear you get a chance to find an exotic in those too.

Just play WvW and get a full stat-selectable set of exotics for 10g + Badges. Total price, not per piece.

If you want Berserker's, get named armor. It's generally under 1g per piece and even comes with a (lovely, but better than nothing) rune set.

For literally anything and everything else, WvW.

That said only four (and a half) sets actually matter for solo open world:

- Viper’s for maximum Condition DPS.
- Celestial for a more survivable Condition DPS. Also works if for some strange reason you’re running a buff or healing build as a solo open world player (why).
- Berserker’s for maximum Power DPS.
- Dragon’s for a more survivable Power DPS - though the very similar Marauder’s may be better for some crit-starved builds. The fact Sigil of Accuracy exists generally tips things toward Dragon though.

Power damage is at most 25% of a fully invested condi build's average output. Mesmer is an outlier where its on-crit condi traits are significantly powerful to the point where you do kind of care about Precision, e.g. Virtuoso uses some Rampager gear in its max damage setup despite the combination only having Condition Damage as a secondary stat, and the loss of Expertise from not using Viper gear is compensated for with Krait runes since Bleeding is most of its damage, but even then it's ~19% power / 81% condi on the Snowcrows build.

I don't think I've ever once bothered to recover an upgrade bc I've never put one in that cost more than like 10 silver. Also by "broke" I fully mean "I have less than 1 gold right now and have already sold most of my poo poo for whatever nonsense I was swapping gold for gems to get". Any port in a storm. Of course any port could also be "gently caress it, go in missing something, the game is forgiving of bad gear like 90% of the time" :D I seem to remember being able to toilet stuff that costs karma to get something sell-able for cold hard bux but I might be thinking of something else. Mind you some exotics are cheap as hell on the TP lately doing a few maps to get the spare change is as you say much better. I just usually have fucktonnes of karma & gently caress all gold lmao

There's also just "ask map chat you never know" bc one time I laughed in chat about the fact I was doing some daily thing underwater and realised my underwater weapon was still one of the starter ones and someone gifted me an exotic without my even asking for one, bc ppl are awesome sometimes.
