It's the most wonderful time of the year, and time for us to find some shudders and shocks in a good book! But what book will it be? Camp Damascus, by Chuck Tingle. quote:Welcome to Neverton, Montana: home to a God-fearing community with a heart of gold. The Island of Doctor Moreau, by H.G. Wells. quote:...the sinister Dr. Moreau - a brilliant scientist whose notorious experiments in vivisection have caused him to abandon the civilised world. It soon becomes clear he has been developing these experiments - with truly horrific results. Frankenstein in Baghdad, by Ahmed Saawadi. quote:From the rubble-strewn streets of U.S.-occupied Baghdad, Hadi--a scavenger and an oddball fixture at a local café--collects human body parts and stitches them together to create a corpse. His goal, he claims, is for the government to recognize the parts as people and to give them proper burial. But when the corpse goes missing, a wave of eerie murders sweeps the city... Bad Cree, by Jessica Johns. quote:When Mackenzie wakes up with a severed crow's head in her hands, she panics. Only moments earlier she had been fending off masses of birds in a snow-covered forest. In bed, when she blinks, the head disappears. Audition, by Ryu Murakami. quote:Documentary-maker Aoyama hasn't dated anyone in the seven years since the death of his beloved wife, Ryoko. Now even his teenage son Shige has suggeste he think about remarrying. So when his best friend Yoshikawa comes up with a plan to hold fake film auditions so that Aoyama can choose a new bride, he decides to go along with the idea. Which of these would send the most satisfying shivers down your spine? Evangelicals, monsters of science old and new, mysterious nature, or a charming Japanese lady? VOTE NOW! I could read any of these, a nice collection of options! Goons in the horror thread were surprised at how good the Tingle story was, and I just had a non forum book nerd friend recommend Frankenstein in Baghdad to me. Well done!

Camp Damascus, by Chuck Tingle (New horror with a queer* bent - also available free with a Scribd trial) The Island of Doctor Moreau, by H.G. Wells (Sci-fi horror classic with a movie) Frankenstein in Baghdad, by Ahmed Saawadi (Interesting but new - I'm so weary of debut books now since the whole industry is based around money, including selling blurbs... I will put it on TBR, but don't know if I'll get to it.) Bad Cree, by Jessica Johns (Debut novel weariness, so no) Audition, by Ryu Murakami (A badass movie, a modern classic - I definitely want to read this. Also available free on Scribd) This boils it down to > Damascus or Audition for me. I voted for both. Since I hosed up and ruined last month's poll with a last minute tiebreaking vote for a novel which disappointed, feel free to spoil. *I THINK. I am pretty sure I heard of this in an LGBT book club group but if I am mistaken on that please forgive me**. **Bisexual so yeah. I am on board with more bi guy visibility. escape artist fucked around with this message at 21:33 on Sep 25, 2023 |

Chuck Tingle is definitely queer lit (I think he identifies as nonbinary, or some flavour of transgender, but I cannot confirm that?). I've read a lot of his short stories - outside of being mostly raunchy pornography they are also exceptionally strange and Tingle has a really unique narrative voice that he credits to his being on the autism spectrum. If you want a sample of how out there he can get, then there was a podcast where different podcast folks did readings of his short stories. I particularly recommend James Urbaniak reading Living Inside My Own Butt For Eight Years, Starting A Business And Turning A Profit Through Common Sense Reinvestment And Strategic Targeted Marketing.

I don't think I'll be participating since I'm doing some decently heavy non-fiction reading this month but just wanted to say that Frankenstein in Baghdad is a good book.

I was joking. I totally understand life taking over, and I am sorry for everything you are going through. All I ask is for folks to read if they vote if they can. But. If they take a victory lap for choosing the winner, then its another matter. And I can think of something not a ban since you toxxed
