I'm sure whatever they're doing to google search is maximizing some KPI somewhere besides, google is one of those companies where you get promoted/widespread adulation from your adoring fans/showered with money by making new products, not by keeping existing things going, even if those existing things produce 90%+ of your multi-billion dollar revenue. once you understand that incentive structure all of their public facing behavior falls into place
