So they walk on their toenails, basically, but sometimes they need to nail a metal thing over the toenail to stop it from being worn down? But sometimes things can go the other way and the hoof is too tough and needs to be trimmed back. And neither operation seems to upset the animal at all?
How do horses survive in the wild if their feet are either overgrown or wearing away??
As I understand it, they need the shoes because we want them to walk on hard surfaces like roads and footpaths, but the shoes prevent their hooves from wearing down as they normally would so they also need to be trimmed. And they're not upset by all this because horses are trained to put up with all kinds of bullshit, like being sat on and made to jump over obstacles instead of just walking around them.

Yeah the shoes are to prevent their hooves from overly wearing, but of course will also prevent a whole lot of just normal wear.

It seems like the Swift chat is done, but, while not having a strong opinion on her music one way or the other, it is interesting that someone can still achieve that level of concentrated fame.

I thought with streaming we were on an inexorable path to a much more fragmented popular music culture, where acts could still get big but not that big.

Anecdotally my friends and family listen to way less of the same stuff these days, whereas in the 90s/00s it was much more dictated by what was on the radio and MTV so we had a lot more crossover.

It's actually pretty common. Young people, devoid of other interests, define themselves by what artist they like most. Swifties for Taylor swift, Barbs for Nicki Minaj, the BTS army, etc. Doja Cat got in trouble a bit ago cause her fans started calling themselves kittens and she was like "if you're gonna start calling yourself a kitten cause you like my music, you need to go outside and help your parents. Why are you making my government name your screen name on social media? You don't know me."

I read something recently that Beyonce's tour is actually outselling Swift's, but because she started it overseas it's not getting the same attention. I don't want to verify any of that right now, but it feels correct.

That could happen in a world where there's no cost to find music you like, but in the real world that takes time and effort, so most people rely on recommendations from people they know or algorithms. That leads to a situation where most acts are obscure, a few are moderately popular, and a very small number are mega-stars.

Yes I would absolutely include Beyoncé in a counterpoint to what I thought was a trend of fragmentation, but I appreciate maybe that fragmentation was entirely in my imagination in the first place.

Edit:

I guess I assumed that algorithms would increase fragmentation (compared to the previous radio status quo) and that alone would cannibalise the megastars, to the point where they wouldn’t become “mega” in the first place (but would still be big stars).

It wasn't that people thought it was broken, it straight up was. Like it got unreleased on PS4 because of how bad it was.
