Mr. Pickles posted:

I dont think its as simple as just "loot sucks".

D2 loot sucked in the pre-LoD era too, because you had a fuckton of utterly useless Uniques (a trend carried on from D1) and also, about 99% of Set Items were also TRASH. So you just had a total of like 5-6 named uniques and set items that were good and then you had the rng rare items which everyone used on almost every build. Not much different from D4 in the current state to be fair.

BUT the item properties of D2 did not suck, because the core game systems behind them were good. Here are a few for reference

Hit Recovery - Good
Life/Mana steal - Good
+all skills / +specific skills - Good
Resistances - Good
Elemental/Physical damage - Good
Armor / Damage Reduction - Good
Crushing Blow/Open wounds/Knockback/Ignore Defense - Good
Magic Find - Apparently people debate over this, but I think it is good
Attack Rating - Not so good but OK, stacking high AR did feel good
Cast rate / Attack speed - Good
Block chance & Speed - Good

Then LoD came and brought much more to the game in terms of properties and unique mechanics on items, but this is not currently comparable to D4

Now, D4 loot does suck very hard too, but it is not as easy to fix because the core mechanics behind the item properties are total JUNK. Here's some:

Critical chance / Critdamage (general or conditional) - JUNK
Lucky hit - JUNK
Overwhatever hit - JUNK
Resistances - Doesn't work, JUNK
Dodge chance - JUNK
Conditional Damage Reduction - JUNK
Conditional damage (close/wounded/distant enemies etc) - JUNK
Vulnerable - JUNK
+all skills - JUNK (seriously how did they even manage this..?)
Barrier / Fortify - JUNK

There's a few which are OK though

Resource generation - Good
Class specific Cost Reduction - Good
Cooldown Reduction - Good
Attack speed - Good
Specific +skills - Good

My point is, they would have to make another game altogether in order to do away with all these crap systems which make itemization in the game bad. This can't be done. Conversely though, Diablo 3 also has CRAP items too but people continue to play it and say it is a good game

You forgot many of the most important affixes like Increased Light Radius, Melee Hits cause monster to flee X%, increased stack size, + Maximum Stamina, increased durability, Physical damage reduced by 1 per hit, Magic damage reduce by 1 per hit, Attacker takes 1-3 thorns damage, Repair 1 Durability every 33 seconds, Indestructible, Ethereal, Replenish one Quantity of Throwing Items every 30 seconds, +1 to maximum damage, +1 to minimum damage, +1-3 fire/frost/lightning/poison damage on physical attacks, 5% extra gold from monsters, Replenish Life +1-4, Reduce stat requirements by 15%, 5% chance to cast fireball/ice bolt/charged bolt on melee hit, half freeze duration, reduce poison duration by 25%, +Attack Rating against Undead, +Chance to Stun Undead, and 5% faster stamina regeneration.

You have been called out, in the ways of old.
The design is so basic I literally just ignore the shrines, clear the dungeon, open boss door then go back and pick up the shrines just to hammer them.

Not to mention the crappy, crappy design of randomly having monster waves on them. Who the gently caress thought that would be a good idea? Or great, engaging gameplay?

At least spawn the monster waves after activating the shrine so there’s actually something left to use the effect on.

I think my biggest issue with the game right now is it wants you to engage with the (independently bad) mechanics of tiny, incremental loot upgrades right away from level 50 despite knowing you’ve got another tedious 50 levels of grind where the drops are slowly going to get higher level.

The monster waves are literally the only good part of the non-conduit shrines. Why would you complain about that lol??

For Season 2 I want a NMD affix where all chests and shrines are cursed.

I love monsters spawning on shrines, the problem in D4 is they spawn in as terribly slow rear end waves. It was fun in D3 since you had to opt into it by using an item (well, cramming it on a follower) and then it always spawned an elite pack or champion and didn't gently caress about with agonizingly slow trash spawns.

cursed shrines spawn stuff in too slowly. i hit them all anyway in case they are not cursed so i get the movement speed boost. i think of shrine duration as a third or fourth tier movement speed affix

cursed shrine are good in dungeons with the ‘kill all mobs’ objective because you can walk away and it will later teleport the first and last waves together to you at once.

The game is suffering what can best be described as failure to thrive. The campaign is good, the gameplay is fun, exploring new classes and builds is interesting, but once you've done all that it has nothing left. There is no worthwhile endgame, population has tanked as people moved on to other games, there is no social or matchmaking capability to find who is left, without leaderboards there is no competitive aspect, and for all their bluster of making it a premier live service game there is no weekly or monthly content cycle except for cosmetics. It lacks anything to keep you around or drag you back in and has tons of friction and aggravating "features" that sap the fun right out if you do.

Legendary aspects being interchangeable among gear slots is a good idea in theory but in practice it kind of eliminates loot identity. When you're endgame item farming, seeing some monster cough up an UNID'd [Diadem] or primal [Sword] should feel like a truly epic event, not another chore where you have to mouse over the 3 other similar aspects in your stash to see if it's worth the cost of upgrading. Uniques were sort of intended to take this role but they're either so niche or so rare that there's not much to get excited about, and they don't even look particularly distinguisable from any other items in the game. In conclusion, Epic Loot is as much a character in Diablo as Tyrael or Cain and it was a mistake to make almost every slot indistinguishable from one another.

I've said it in here before but I'm going to keep shouting about it: they should rip off Division 2s stat library thing wholesale.

You can destroy any piece of gear to rip one stat roll or perk off of it, for free, and store it in your stat library, which works exactly like the codex in D4, ie you can pop that stat roll onto an unlimited # of other items as long as you have the mats. The UI also very cleverly includes indicators to show you how the stat rolls on the item you're looking at compared to what you have in your library already, so when you pick up a random yellow shotgun, you can see that it's got 7% crit vs the 5% roll you currently have stored.

This accomplished a bunch of really positive things. One, trash loot felt worth looking at because filling out your library tickled the reward center of your brains and helped you upgrade your poo poo/try out new builds down the line. Two, it made runs where you didn't get any direct gear upgrades to drop not feel so bad, because you most likely got a bunch of library upgrades out of it. Getting a max armor damage roll to re-use forever felt almost as good as finding a new gun. Three, it seriously cut down on inventory bloat and how much time you spent managing and looking through your stash.

Sure would be great not to have to stash 7 random legendaries all season because they have decent shockwave aspect rolls you might need down the line. Just sayin.

D4 looks phenomenal, sounds even better, plays wonderfully

and has such poo poo inventory and UI qol it actively
makes play sessions aggravating

if they solve that fully in s2 (not likely) then...

the endgame grind isn't interesting - I do not fully fault them for this, it will take time to flesh out, but whether reasonable or not, it's not there and that's a problem for playing more than a week. I didn't even make it through S1 because...

the class balance and tuning isn't great, I felt punished for experimenting with anything off meta, and with the loving obnoxious respec bullshit (see above re qol) I logged and did not return after a failed respec experiment

D4 has really solid bones, if they can polish the sharp edges off and continue to iterate content and gameplay systems, it'll be in a great place in a year or two

alternately they can put it on life support and fire half the team, that's popular these days too

It's not that there's nothing to do, it's that past a certain point the only way to progress is to do NMDs for glyph XP.

It should be that you log in and see your guy standing there and think "Do I want to do helltides, or whispers, or try PvP, or try and get a backup Barber from the seasonal stuff, or unlock some more aspects in the codex, wait for a world event, or just explore the overworld and maybe do a side quest." Or maybe start levelling up a different guy! There is actually a whole bunch of stuff you could theoretically do.

Instead I log in and think "which combo of NMD affixes is going to be least annoying" because they're the only way to get glyph XP. I am entirely prepared to accept that this is just me getting hung up on efficiency, but there's a big difference between 'this is the most efficient way to progress this one mechanic' and 'this is the only way to progress this one mechanic.'

I'm only level 75, so I could just forget about the glyphs and work on any of the other stuff above - I get the impression that the glyph/nmd grind was designed as a last-line-of-defence to keep people playing past L100. But firstly it feels really inefficient to not be working on glyphs, and secondly that's just leaving the problem for later that once you hit L100 and 850ish gear, the only endgame is just glyphs and the only thing that progresses them is NMDs. Even then, they progress at an absolute crawl so the earlier you start the better.

Coming up with a way to let you work on your glyphs in any activity would be a huge QoL improvement because at least then there'd be some variety.
