the THRILL
Such a frustratingly obvious attempt to distract from their failing record on pretty much everything they’re responsible for. And getting to do it by making GBS threads on one of the most disadvantaged groups in society? Super cool!

The injunction decision is an interesting read. The Crown lawyers were so clearly outgunned by the national law firm representing UR Pride. It shines through in nearly every aspect of the decision, but particularly in relation to the quality of the evidence each side was able to muster on short notice.

One interesting aspect, to me, is that one of the Crown’s central arguments was that the injunction application was premature because the policy wont have an impact until the individual school boards develop their own implementation policies. This was rejected by the judge, in part because UR Pride filed evidence from teachers about how the policy was already being implemented in their schools.

Immediately after the decision is issued, Moe sends out this tweet that directly contradicts his own government’s argument (the policy doesn’t have an immediate effect so no injunction is needed), by saying that the policy is so urgently needed that they’ll invoke the notwithstanding clause to overrule the injunction, instead of waiting for the outcome of the actual hearing on the substantial merits in November.

I know it’s basically par for the course for Moe, who already called the Deputy Minister of Education a liar (and, by implication, called Crown counsel incompetent) for swearing an affidavit that said the policy was developed and implemented in 6 days in response to 18 form letters they received from random people who may not even live in the province, but it’s still infuriating.

Among this whole thing is also a huge backslide towards prudism where any mention of sex whatsoever is considered over the line. My idiot insanely right wing ex friend from high school sent me a libs of tick rock style post being like

“These ABC of sex sex ed cards were found at a table for community health services at a high school education fair in the gym! They’re trying to teach your kids about anal sex!!”

Like… we learned the same thing at the same time back in the day… so you want kids to never hear anything about sex until they’re adults, years after most of them will become sexually active?

It’s just complete cynical politics. The province is in shambles. They’ve cut social spending and caused a massive homelessness/addictions crisis, they’ve let the government-owned low income housing stock fall into such disrepair that a large portion of it is essentially worthless due to asbestos and general disrepair (and imposed a racist Ukranian-refugee-first policy on the limited social housing that’s left, to the exclusion of indigenous people and refugees who aren’t white), they’ve underfunded schools to the extent that class sizes are 30% bigger than they were 10 years ago and there literally aren’t enough schools for the people living here, but instead of dealing with that they’ve posted billboards all over the province lying about high teacher wages in an attempt to vilify teachers to distract from all the other problems with underfunding education, they’ve underfunded health care to the extent that doctors are fleeing the province or retiring due to burnout, resulting in some of the longest medical-care wait times in Canada, they’ve wasted billions on a bunch of giveaways for their corporate donors (Regina GTH bypass), wasted millions on doomed court challenges to funnel money to one specific law firm, caused some of the highest inflation and largest wage stagnation in Canada…

And all everyone’s talking about is this pronoun policy, which over half the people living outside Saskatoon and Regina support wholeheartedly. I got yelled at by multiple people a few weeks ago at a rural wedding for daring to drink bud light due to this stupid culture war bullshit, which is fully being stoked by Scott Moe. The government is going all-in on these culture war issues because that’s all that the low-information morons who get most of their news from a corrupt party-affiliated AM radio talk show host care about.

The big news in Saskatchewan, right now, should either be that the government has condemned a bunch of complex-needs disabled people to freeze to death this winter by pulling funding for emergency shelters in Saskatoon with no backup plan, or that the government has knowingly exposed people in government-owned care homes and low income housing to asbestos for years, both of which are stories that came out or re-emerged this week. Nobody is talking about these things because Scott Moe has successfully distracted everyone by going after disadvantaged children.

Sometimes control over the people willing to join "the cause". So many people who are now concerned about "parental rights" were anti-mask and anti-vax convoy supporters who got pulled into these Christian groups. I saw a parental rights protester who was literally using the other side of her anti-mask sign to protest for "parents rights" (I was confused by the upside down anti-mask message until I realized what was happening). It's also not coincidental that "parents rights" protests are populated by jacked up trucks covered in 12 Canadian flags and gently caress Trudeau stickers.

Donchya know, children are chattel to be indoctrinated, used as an emotional or literal punching bag, and exploited for their labour around the farm and home, until the males come of age and goes off to war or Business and the females are married off to a Proper Christian Man for an appropriate dowry

Canadian police won't investigate doctor for sterilizing Indigenous woman

Police in Canada say they will not pursue a criminal investigation into a recent case in which a doctor sterilized an Inuit woman without her consent

.....

The Canadian government says it is urgently trying to end the forced sterilization of Indigenous women, describing the practice as a human rights violation and a prosecutable offense. Yet police say they will not pursue a criminal investigation into a recent case in which a doctor apologized for his “unprofessional conduct” in sterilizing an Inuit woman.

She's been severely traumatized so no wonder she hasn't reported it officially yet. But that shouldn't matter in this case. It's not like some spousal fight. Someone was irreparably physically damaged. It's not some slap to the face, a bruise that will heal. It may be the law, but the law clearly is failing in this situation.

This was absolutely the case in Vancouver. Over 50% were people of colour, most of which were muslim. The right’s internal and external cultural enemies have switched so hard that the muslims protesting for “parents rights” have forgotten their Christian-fascist buddies would have cheered on their arrest/deportation/murder/harassment just a few short years ago.

Yeah that's the dumb frustrating part (not a lawyer) but technically you don't need the victim to "press charges" crime is an offense to society.

That is why criminal cases are always queen/king vs accused. The state is accusing you of committing a crime against society, and it doesn't need a cooperating victim to charge and convict someone. (Though it makes it easier)

The crown prosecutor service by electing to not charge the doctor or even pursue the case has indicated that society doesn't care about sterilizing indigenous women. (We all knew that but an easy place to point to for uncaring society)

Though it could also be another sign of a failing justice system since we have a lot of Jordan stays and an appearance of a failing justice system from all the bail attackers.
