Inception had a lot of Goldeneye 64 vibes with the snow base section, at least to me.

And there’s the rub. The element that makes Bond both popular and different from other spy movies is the, how do I articulate this,“decadence” and greasy old money sleaze that comes from being a literal pure blood aristocrat. Whether that be the “Baroque High Society Sneering Imperialist” of Connery’s Bond or the “F1-driving coke-fiend failson burnout” of Craig’s take.
If Bond is slumming it up living as a filthy peasant you might as well just go watch Jason Bourne or MI.

Yeah, Bond has always been a very particular mix of watching an entertaining sleaze rampage through exotic locations with copious product placement and middle-class aspirationalism. Also never thought of Craig's Bond like that, but it really works. Still kinda LOL that Skyfall basically has him be Scottish Bruce Wayne.

I don’t think a Black Bond could work because the entire way Bond operates is based around how a sufficiently suave and expensively dressed white male will just be allowed to walk into any place unquestioned without remark and have none of his cover ID’s scrutinized. Black Bond would constantly be getting dirty looks from across the room from every rich white person in the casino/opera hall/auction house/museum and wouldn’t even get to have his inciting verbal sparing match with the villain, because he’d be stuck at the door getting accosted by security who keep double and triple checking his identification.

Now I really want to see Scott Sanders & Michael Jai White's "Black Bond"

if i had to guess id say the part of scott pilgrim people find offensive is literally just the extent to which the phrase manic pixie dream girl can be used to apply to the love interest im not sure ive ever actually seen anyone say in a semiformal context that the title character cheating on his underage asian schoolgirl ninja girlfriend is pretty wtf

i was pretty nah on the question of whether theyd actually do a black bond before reading this post but having read this post ive changed my mind because this is exactly the kind of wokewashing as a cover for whitewashing that hollywood loves these days

still thinking about how in the series finale of hunters the prosecutor at adolf hitlers trial is a dark skinned african jew which would be a pretty weird thing for israel to have at the time given they were literally sterilizing darked skinned african jews back then

Generation V on Amazon is pretty good, not as good as The Boys (so far anyway) by virtue of being a spinoff but scratches that itch and has the same edginess. Full frontal male nudity and hosed up gratuitous death scenes in ep 1

Diving back into this universe though really makes me yearn for The Boys finally ending with all these marvel freaks stripped of their power and Vought left a smoking crater, you love to hate it

black bond manages to meet exactly one racist person in the entire movie some random guy in a cockney accent who he beats up while sipping tea in one hand the nearby copper apologizes for the trouble says that its because all those mixed up kids have been listening to too much populism and then says god save the queen who is one sixty fourth black and thus free from racism just like the rest of the upper classes

the joke with the scott pilgrim offensive content title card is just that the type of character that scott is, that sort of slacker lothario who is incapable of learning, is no longer popular. it's not about there being a secret blackface scene they're going to have to cut.

Also reminds me that one of the fun bits of Hitman is Agent 47's stuffy and somewhat snobby personality that for the same reason fits in pretty much anywhere because he can so easily take on roles where everyone assumes he's just supposed to be allowed in. Definitely a different direction from Bond in other aspects besides their love of designer suits and fancy gadgets, though.

Were they ever? Well, besides 00s webcomic protagonists. I got the idea that Scott is absolutely meant to be a lovely character who audience identification traits are specifically that of common negative qualities of immature nerds in their early twenties. The entire narrative down to the titles treats him with contempt until he begins to realise his problems.

Yes, it works both as a straightforward spy cover, and also allows for the intentional visual comedy of the menacing bald guy standing completely stiff wearing a giant neon sign saying I AM AN ASSASSIN, while the world just passes him by obliviously

I think Yahtzee had it bang on affectionately describing the formula as 'adventure games for the impatient'. You can kill people in ludicrous Rube Goldberg ways but also have a bunch of guns in case you get really fed up.

As we know now, tragically, it’s a norm that every other person is like Travis Bickle.”
