The average is 5.5? I thought it was 4. This is very unsettling.

I picked up a really good book years ago called "Sky's Witness." it's a .. memoir of sorts by a guy who spent winters mountaineering in the wind river range of wyoming, collecting snow cores for analysis to measure air pollution. he details how, even in this very remote place, pollution from coal plants, the west coast, and east asia was affecting fish in lakes and accumulating in streams/lakes. he explains how the various government agencies only cared about the data he was helping to collect up to a certain level of bureaucracy, at which point communication was just a black hole. i picked it up because i have visited the area so much and love it, but didn't really know what he was going to get into.

e: to be clear he was an employee of the us federal government, not just some dude

it was published in 1993 lol

honestly, when i find something magical like this in nature, i'm relieved some deranged person hasn't destroyed it yet
i'm surprised more people aren't destroying stuff. in an era of extreme social alienation and atomization, capital-driven self-indulgence and seeking the life, liberty, freedom blah blah, and inequality, of course people are gunna destroy or deface public stuff. when you dont have much to live for compared to everyone else, or associate communally, destruction is an outlet for the internal dialectical strife to take it on the perceived others

i say, destroy it all. glaciers, forests, or neat rocks. down it must all go
