the insider trading scandal rolling through norwegian public discourse these days is likewise demonstrating a surprising level of wilingness from some quarters to outright defend obvious malfeasance. as it turns out, the husband of the prime minister from 2013-2021 lost value relative to a standard fund-savings approach, but only because he invested on Oslo Børs and the NOK has completely cratered. had the NOK remained at 2013 levels, he would've outperformed the market by a fair margin. there is clearly something dodgy here, but we have people lining up to say "oh it's unreasonable to expect people sharing a household economy with ministers to avoid active trading of stocks and options" like it's a normal thing. it's absurd.

I remember the older teachers in my Danish as a second language days talking about immigration being hosed from at least the moment we began using fremmedarbejdere. Obviously, these people were not giant racists (teaching immigrants Danish is a pretty bad career for a racist). Instead, their point was that negative effort was put into integration at that time, which gave us a sizeable population of people who didn't know how anything worked or speak the language, and concentrated in isolated communities too. And from there, it's basically just snowballed, and at least since the 90s, the answer has been to punish the immigrants for the systemic failure and also not do anything meaningful to actually help these people join the society at large.

Yep, gotta love how the Scandinavian model for integration is to treat outsiders differently. Fun anecdote: I'm a Danish citizen born outside the country. When I had to go on kontanthjælp, a very tired social worker told me that I could get several thousand kroner if I willingly returned to my homeland

He left the following semester, but those 7,5 hp kept me from getting deported from Sweden so fine I guess.
