I always like how Mizukami shows the passage of time in his work. A lot of his books include children outgrowing their parents and leaving for unseen, unknown adventures. His characters don't stop existing when they leave the page; there's a sense they're out there, somewhere, living lives we'll never know. Maybe we'll see them again if fate smiles, but more likely not.

Yeah, he’s definitely a fan of writing stories that span large amounts of time and the premise of Spirit Circle really lets him flex that muscle the most

I like Japan Tengu Party. It's fun that they're supernatural beings who have left aside or lost their way being human and are sort of birds, and then they also act flighty and quarrelsome like birds. Master hiding in a cello case because of uncle's gaze for a long time was a hilarious gimmick and Mister Z being somehow huge and strong but also weirdly being able to just lose his head and having to talk through the girl is fittingly bizarre and contradictory.

That's the stuff, there's never been a story that wasn't improved by having a giant ancient skeleton show up in it. I also posit that any existing story without them would also be improved by adding one.

STRANGE TALES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO PAINTED SKIN ![]() It's the most famous story from LiaoZhai! Painted Skin has several tv/movie adaptations and is considered a standout of the stories, because it depicts the true horror of ancient Chinese society: MISOGYNY (new adaptations have way less of that). In my view this is a more horror but less nuanced version of the Legend of the White Snake Green Snake/White Snake is my otp ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Moral: Do your due diligence when you meet a hot person in the street before letting them into your home! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-DDXnl2jDM

The art style basically grabbed me from the first page and it's a big part of why I'm posting it here. It can get a little difficult to parse, though. Hopefully it'll be a bit more legible once we scene change out of this night time typhoon situation. The Saddest Rhino posted:STRANGE TALES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO Can't help but wonder what the Daoist is planning to do with the hot lady skin... Anyway, about here is when I'd post more comics except I've kind of run out. Maybe that's for the best? It's not so much effort to post now that I know how to use Imgur batch linking and Irfanview's batch renaming, but three series at once might be taking the piss a little bit. Just got mission-crept into it somehow. You know what though, I think I'll post another thing anyway. Not dumping the full archive, just this one boulet that's been sitting in my bookmarks for months: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
