I get lost in menus because of ADHD so I really need a physical interface for everything.

Yeah I just find screens really distracting most of the time, that's where all the work, social media and videogames happen. I don't have anything against digital music tools I just find it less engrossing, in the same way I still prefer reading paper books to reading on a tablet. More highly evolved beings will not have this problem, I'm sure.

Is it possible to use a generic expression pedal (eg one from a digital piano) with a Zoom G2 Four or other multi-effect processors, as long as the pedal's got a 1/4" jack?

You need an expression pedal with a pot on the output, not a momentary switch. A sustain pedal will just be on/off and won't give you the value change you're after. The Moog EP1 is a decent and solid one, but there are cheaper if you don't mind them feeling a bit plastic.

All you knob twiddlers should spend a day in a old-school studio fighting with tape and analog desks and then you'll be begging for your digital trims and automation back. I have recorded a couple of projects to tape and enjoyed the end result, but I'd honestly take all the menus in the world over razorblade editing again. I'd DEFINITELY take them over fighting a Tascam digital 8-track, which is what we made two entire albums on because we couldn't afford real studio time. The Record button was broken so you had to hit it with a biro.

my main problem is that every DAW and plugin has an interface that's about 20 years behind everything else that's on a computer

That's partly because the audio engineer market is overwhelmingly old and grognardy these days! The jump to Pro Tools last century was traumatic enough without updating the interface in any major way.

if im recording it's into logic pro. which means i can use the desktop editor for the helix, which means I no longer have to bend over to adjust the unit itself, and thank god for that. It's a bit redundant to have the unit because you could just load helix native, but it's also all of my I/O so it's still useful, and i fi want to practice and not record I won't bother turning on logic.

Logic can be tricky, an audio engineer can mix my stuff 100x faster and 1000x better than I can, but i dont know what the alternative besides going back to old recording multitrack which I have zero interest in ever trying again because it's worse. in a live scenario im not going to use logic at all and just go straight to PA or similar

Logic has been by far the easiest DAW to use for just plugging in and going, with their built in cabs/DI split/pedalboard stuff. The auto-drummer is handy too!

I spent hundreds on plugins for Ableton that don't even come close to what Logic just has out of the box.

on the subject of the 000-18 I got last week, I both love and regret it. on one hand it sounds and looks beautiful, on the other, I don't know if i feel good paying more for a mahogany back than a rosewood guitar. The other thing is that I don't know if i like the shorter scale or not. there's a bit of a delay between hammer ons that the long scale doesn't have. But then it changes the tone a bit and I think I do like that.

I got it to compliment my D28, but i've been wondering all weekend should I return it and get a OM-28, but that's probably stupid, all I'm really doing then is getting a smaller D28 with torrefied wood

I don't think the store is going to be interested in letting me do it though if there's nothing wrong with the 000-18

im leaning towards keeping it because it does have its own unique voice and it's more rare to see out and about, i know I'll look back and think that guitar sounded GOOD. i dunno though

One plugin does like 100 pedals tho lol. And the dirty secret to sim is you can still work in unique pedals if you need to with send/returns. Although I’ve plugged in all my pedals into the helix and I find no difference between onboard except they might have different default settings

Lg, try a epiphone LP modern. It’s lightweight , it’s the slimmest neck, it’s got the most modern sounding pickups with coil tap feature( If the specs are same as Gibson at least). I have a gibby version and I like it a lot

Or try a Gibson lp studio if you crave the 🇺🇸. I think that has a satin neck and it’s also ultra weight relieved, and it’s not got binding or fret nibs which makes it the cheapest most function intended lp

i think a good thing to do when you're feeling this way to identify what you like about your guitar and want to keep, and where you feel it's falling short of what you need to be at your best or most comfortable.

oh i just don't have the money for a player. so it's kind of a game of "what don't i dislike" and "what needs to go".

i did remember tho the other night i took the strings off and one of the frets had a really severe ding in it. pretty worn in general-- i DID have it for three straight years before my strat, remember. and so if i think about the cost of either a different neck or refret work in addition to what it'd cost to get like, a new input jack and bridge (i'd like to palm mute) it starts to match what the whole guitar originally cost to begin with.

and it's still one i'm not quite hot on the look of because it was that weird semi transparent yellowy white, but it sure did yellow over the last ~5 so now it looks even more boomery. i always wanted a pure, snow white finish on one, mind.

I got a new guitar in today, I bought another MJ Dinky because I like my other one so much, it just has the best "comfortable in your lap and to hold" feeling out of all my guitars. This one actually has landgrabbers favorite pickup in the bridge, but I think I'm gonna swap my Lundgrens in and put this Jazz/JB set in my soloist(which is my Standard tuning guitar so they will be serving a good purpose there). I dunno, I'll see how the JB sounds in C standard first for a bit.

Anyway, was a little disappointed in some small issues the seller didn't list. Apparently the previous owner let it get dry because it has/did have some sprouting issues. The side inlays very slightly poke out. I think they already took care of the frets, because you can see where they were sanding on the corner and rolled the fretboard off and left tooling marks all over it. The roll feels nice, but it's ugly. What's the best way to clean up those tooling marks? High grit sandpaper? I'm not sure of 0000 steel wool will work on wood as well as frets. I could return it, but it would be probably more work to ship it back, get a refund and find another guitar like it and I did technically get this cheaper than I've seen them go for before.

e: Also every bolt on guitar should come with a joint like these. It feels so nice. That little scoop in the lower horn on the back doesn't actually do anything for access, but looks cool at least.

Fretboard, you should be able to see them in the last picture if you expand it.

Oh yeah, I see. You should be able to sand those out pretty easily, probably could start coarser than steel wool. Like not 80, but something finer like 1000-1500.

Have a look on YouTube for fretboard repairs to get a feel, if you're unsure about taking sandpaper to your guitar.

Good Soldier Svejk
Jul 5, 2010

I'd say get a cheap assortment of paper like this: https://a.co/d/8at5VuJ

Start at like 600 and see if that'll take out the marks, if not go coarser and then work back up until the edges are smooth as butter

And gently
Little bit at a time

The Zoom G2 Four and G2x Four have presets not only for early Duran Duran but two - TWO - different styles of city pop.

All I gotta do is get the people selling 'em on Reverb to respond to my offers. Took out the city pop songbooks I got from Japan when I was there a few months back since my new guitar teacher asked me if I knew it. It is time.

Speaking of city pop - if I'm doing the thing where I'm strumming a barre on all six strings, and I'm lifting enough to have a muted strum, is there a way to cut down the clacking tone sound that comes from the muted strum? An extra-thin pick helps but it isn't 100%. I'm guessing this is some kind of pedal or effect wizardry that I'll have to futz with but I'm now emotionally prepared.

It’s a mix of force applied to the muted chord and force applied from the picking hand; I think you want to pick softer, but at the same speed and let off the chord more.

Edit: this is a thing that will also come naturally over time.
