I think the thread could do with a bad cop to Guav's good cop as I don't think I've ever seen him take action. I'm glad he's been chill but we're definitely starting to get a case of poster rot with real pieces of poo poo just carrying on in here as usual.

Don't say it's me I know you're thinking it.

Bobbing up again with the latest on Camrath.

His funeral is this Saturday, 7 October.

His wife has asked, quote, "Could you ask the goons if they'd do some more bluescreen H fudge meme photos please?"

Consider yourselves asked. Your very finest for this fine man.

While posting, I found this a few days ago; a poem I wrote for him two years ago. I wasn't originally going to put this in my imminent poetry collection, but now, it's going to be the last one.

RIDING THE ZEITGEIST SINCE 2003

Today it pleased me, friend, to note
Our friendship's reached the age to vote,
Can buy a whiskey or a beer,
For it has reached its eighteenth year.
It soon, absent unomened strife,
Will have been with you half your life.
Online, on stage, on boats, in cars
On Boston streets, in hotel bars,
We've done such deeds and seen such things,
Have lived like paupers and like kings.
I think it fit that I confide
It's been a wild and joyous ride
With miles and years before its end.
Here's to the next eighteen, my friend.

ENVOI

How on this friendship have I lucked?
Simple: because we've never hosed.

I like your poem. Also, not that I can attend the funeral in any way, but on the day, I will be doing a longsword seminar so I can then train in longsword and sword (probably arming I reckon) and buckler. I wanna go double buckler for fun. I like to think Camrath would approve.

If bad posters aren't familiar with a UK thread then maybe they should move on one relating to their home.

Other than that i'm perfectly content in applying the Ignore button in "long, uncontrolled bursts" (a PTerry reference). :c00lbert:

It is true that standard D&D rules do not apply and thread moderation is according to the judgement of the IK(s). I would certainly be willing to have an additional EngPol hangout thread on another part of the forums while making the one in D&D more rigorous if there were interest in this.

FYI There is already a UK Casual chat thread in GBS and then a UK Politics shitposting thread in CSPAM. Not sure what other subforums there are that a new thread would be suitable in.

Could also make it so D&D rules can be enforced, but only when a post is reported by a thread regular. That would certainly be the easiest thing on our end, as we see every report anyway.

To be honest the problem is primarily people who come in here, post extremely racist or fascist poo poo, and then don't get probated due to Guav's kindness and then just assume they're allowed to keep posting despite posting genocidal rhetoric.

No ta. I used to be an AOL "board host" thousands of years ago at the dawning of the interwebs.... (we got free internet in exchange).
I remember when they put me on the Football boards (I loathe football).
Mostly I did the 'members help' in the days when idiots customers would blame AOL for taking over their computers, murdering their goldfish etc.

The normal posters in the thread aren't really compatible with the new oiks. Personally I would simply eject the new ones, all they're doing is complaining about how nobody wants to listen to their shite, but I don't think it is incumbent on anybody here to give audience to idiots or to make accomodations to them. Let them find a different thread if they don't like this one.

You can't mandate that people agree with them and exhaustive disagreement is not to their liking either. So either you keep them around until one side gets tired or they find somewhere else to spout their poo poo.

E: or I suppose half the thread puts them on ignore, that is also an option.

We will build the HS2 Euston terminal. It'll be 999 luxury flats, one of which has a garbage chute that you can crawl to Old Oak Common through. All of them will be on thousand year leases from a specially construed independent principality set up in the same fashion as the liberty of Savoy or the Vatican, meaning that any further expansion to the chute would be an act of war.

Jeremy Hunt in that linked article posted:

Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, said yesterday: “We do have to answer the question as to why it costs 10 times more to build high speed rail in this country than across the channel in France because it is taxpayers’ money.”
Because, Jeremy, the French have been consistently building high speed rail for the past thirty loving years. Every time we do major infrastructure in the UK we learn it again from scratch, poo poo ourselves at the cost of learning, write a NAO report about exactly what the mistakes were and vow never to try again.

Ultimately I don't like the "just put them on ignore" option because it actively rewards someone whose entire goal is to upset people. Those who see them for what they are put them on ignore, and those who either don't realise they can or don't think to then have to suffer the consequences. My view on ignore functions is that only works for public media shitholes like reddit or twitter and not for well moderated forums.

Also don't make njan99 an IK because I think that will force him off my ignore list or at the very least stop me from adding more people to it because the forums software doesn't like it when you have moderators on your ignore list.

Alternatively give me the ability to put moderators on ignore. I will pay at least five dollars for this ability if you make it a forums feature.

I only really lurk this thread but it's only been unreadable for the past couple of days because like, two posters (reading thru the last few pages one of which is evading a perma apparently?? idk) have spent every moment picking fights with everyone else in the thread over and over.

Without them it's completely fine, they're clearly not trying to seriously engage with anyone.

Absolutely! I mean historically most of the times I've gotten probated it's because under a lack of moderation I tend to make more extreme posts simply to make the oval office on the other end upset. When there's no accountability I tend towards upsetting the person ruining the place I'm perusing.

SNCF definitely benefited from the long-term planning and management that nationalised technocratic organisations are suited to.

By planning and costing almost the entire TGV network in one go, even when it would be built in phases across decades, the French were able to build and maintain skills, procedures, equipment and processes so that each TGV line progressively became easier to build because they were employing people who had done little else.

It was the same when the (private) Japanese railways did electrification - they deliberately chose to proceed at a relatively slow but relentless pace, employing small teams who became experts at building electric railways and ended up being able to do it quicker and cheaper than anywhere else in the world.

The UK always shoots itself in the foot with a famine/feast approach to this big-scale stuff. The gap between HS1 and HS2 was just long enough for all the people involved to retire, retrain or go elsewhere so all the skills, from the planning to the project management to the actual construction, had to be bought in (expensive) or regenerated (expensive and slow). Before HS1 BR had built the Selby Diversion and electrified the ECML...having lost most of the in-house skills from doing the WCML thanks to time and privatisation.

The recent exception seems to be the National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to ensure a steady multi-decade flow of work by interlacing various RN and RFA projects to stop the endless cycle of up-skilling and de-skilling, and also aiming to build certain specialist skills in particular locations. And so far it seems to actually be working.

TW: I never thought I'd ever write the following.

In defence of NJAN99, he is no longer the worst poster in the thread. He's not even the second worst poster.

His posting has actually improved, and he has made an effort to fit in over the past few months. He even PM'd me out of the blue just the other day because he was worried I might take something he'd posted the wrong way (I didn't). He's made me laugh more times than he's riled me of late, so if people do have him on block, consider giving him a second chance. You can always put him back on block.

He shouldn't be IK though, and I feel terrible suggesting it as a joke ;)

I got a fulton one a number of years ago for about £40, which is expensive but it has a button on it to fire it and it's both all plastic so it doesn't rust, but still study so it still works great. It is button clasped but full size with a walking stick handle, they do smaller ones though.

You might get them cheaper from them direct as it was in a department store where I got it so it was probably marked up a lot. But it was exactly what I wanted so eh, might as well have a nice thing if I'm going to be using it.

Only issue I had with it was the rubberized coating went manky after a few years but just scrub it off the handle and it's fine.

Alternatively, could you not add a button to your existing one?

E: this one looks pretty fancy, if you've never had one that fires with a button they're great fun.
