Pretty sure your only option would be to switch to 'Single Tab' mode in Settings. That puts the bar back at the top as well though.

Speaking of Safari, didn’t the AA button used to have an option to move the URL bar back to the top? Did they get rid of that in iOS 17?

Any recommendations for an Apple News replacement? I was using Artifact but they’re making GBS threads the bed trying to become Twitter.

Ehhhh I just want a lazy app that can spoon feed me news stories from a variety of sources without constantly including a bunch of crap I need to pay $9.99/mo for in the + version of the app. I’m not really looking to cultivate an RSS. Edit: like the actual News app would be ideal if a loving third of it wasn’t paid, or if I had an option to pay them $5 to permanently hide the + stories or whatever.

I quit reddit after the whole... deal in the last 6 months. RSS gets me what I need for work stuff. Lemmy just ain't there. I, too, hate News.app. A coworker highly recommends https://phys.org. That's it. No app. Just the website. I haven't really given it that much time yet.

If Apple News would just actually block news sources instead of putting them up but greyed out it would improve it immensely. What a stupid method to block sources.

I use Feedly and just add RSS feeds to it. Works well.

My complaint with this modern idea of automated news is less about the sources or people writing the stories but the dumbass algorithms driving the feed. You tap on a story about a given keyword once and it fills the entire feed with poo poo around that same keyword with no attention paid to the content of the one story you read. The code is completely incapable of figuring out the context or looking at my habits to determine why a story might have looked valuable. Relentless downvoting sort of tames it after a few days but it shouldn't be that much work. (it's not just an apple thing, all the news aggregators do it)
|
# ? Oct 3, 2023 02:49 |
I use an app called OptOut which follows local news sources, less fluff. I also use a couple aggregator apps for headlines, mainly Newser and Volv, neither of which are great but do cover what they need to. I've also used Inoreader which is okay but never clicked for me.

I feel like Apple News used to block articles from blocked sources? IIRC the gray box showing that an article/source was blocked would still be there and it might have said what the source was, but I don’t remember it telling you the title of it or anything. Just something like “an article from Fox News was blocked”. Anyway I think people itt recommended the Trakt app for tv episode tracking. Is there a way to mark a tv series as “not interested in watching anymore” so that it doesn’t show up in my “continue watching” feed? Without deleting the tv series entirely?

Finding good news sources that support rss is harder and harder now, it sucks.

In the iOS app long press on the shows episode in your 'Up Next/Continue Watching' and you can hide the show, just a season, or start a rewatch. On the web you can do the same thing my going into the 'Progress' section of your 'Up Next' list.

That's the one from the tab selection mode that switches between your private and non-private tabs. You can also lock the porn tab behind Face ID now. Not that any of us would have a reason to do so. (Also yeah all the safari changes are definitely cleaner UX.)

Speaking of Apple News dot App, they added a crossword at some point and it's not terrible. It's rather full-featured, but I think you can only do the daily one without News+. I didn't see a way to go straight to the crossword; you have to just scroll for a while and then there's a Games section.

I somehow fell through the cracks with the NYT Crossword where I’m not paying for it but I still have access, but only on my phone. On my iPad it’s asking me to pay.

But yeah, I like their crosswords because they are easy so I feel smart finishing them. The Sunday puzzles are like an NYT Wednesday lol

I don't stray from the default page; I'm not actually "following" anything in the app which was why I missed the direct link.

I’m not seeing a way to do anything without News+. A shame, but I sub to NYT Games already so that’s fine. I wish Apple Plus was $20, I’d like a bundle but I don’t need half of what they offer and can’t justify $30+.

Yeah, I can’t do anything without news+ now, either. For some reason it let me play one yesterday, but now everything is locked. First one is free? But only for some people?? I can’t test if Apple Pencil works since I can’t get into any of the puzzles. Also, in News on my iPad there’s a big “puzzles” section in the side panel, complete with a little puzzle piece icon; I guess I really, really didn’t try very hard to look for a direct link.

On the subject of the News app, is it possible to force it to update the lock screen widget more often? I have it set mostly just to glance at a headline on a topic now and again but never really to read any articles, so refreshing something like every half hour would be better for me than however long it's currently set for.
