I also had a non-Apple Newton OS device, it was kinda neat

I was still too young to care about the PDA rush, by the time I was of age to start having things I was all about the iPod and MP3 players in general.

Those days Windows CE > Pocket PC > Windows Mobile devices had much bigger color screen than a Palm. I must have missed a couple Wince rebranding efforts. Treo is still the best looking smartphone though.

I was the coolest kid in middle school with a palm pilot. I used to turn on/off the tv's in the building with the IR port and a universal remote app once I figured out the code for the tv's.

All these pre-iPhone pre-iPod devices being kinda lovely is what made me a bit of an Apple fanboy as well. The UX of all of these devices was just so much worse than the stuff Apple was putting out at the time. I didn't miss Windows Mobile or PalmOS in the slightest when I moved over to the iPhone 3G.

I had a compaq aero that I loved but then my friend one-upped me and got an hp jornada (I think is what it was called). It was simmer, faster, more capable, better cover… I think I just donated the aero to goodwill a couple years ago after lugging it around forever.

Also those Pocket PC were the hottest devices I ever held. Hottest as in warmest. All made by HTC btw, I still don't understand how HTC went out of business and Asus and Acer are still making phones.

HTC didn't go out of business, they just fell deep into the trend chasing hole after everyone caught up to them and flailed themselves into irrelevance. Last I heard they were doing crypto phones and VR headsets with zero awareness of what the rest of the market is doing.

I had a really early Apple(?) PDA that my father got from one of his friends and I messed around with that for a while before sticking it on a shelf because I didn't really have a use for a PDA and there wasn't that much else you could do with the thing IIRC. Monochrome screen, it had a stylus but you had to write a very specific way for it to recognize letters, very limited suite of apps, this was well before WiFi was a thing.

The old PDA era was indeed the beginning of pocket emulation and retro gaming, including the original PocketNES https://the-gadgeteer.com/2001/03/06/emulators_for_pocket_pcs_an_overview_of_the_best_article/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nfg4YIoYas

I bought two ipaqs in the early 2000s and they flat out refuse to die I think this one is from 2005 and the battery still works fine 18 years later. It did a reasonable job as an mp3 player and the pocketpc port of sim city 2000 was a good time waster

Every Youtube video I've seen of iPaqs has had the battery still work just fine. It's quite genuinely impressive.

You should put the iPaq in your retro console collection display case.

I definitely wanted a PDA when I was younger, I'd read all the reviews of them in APC mag and get all sorts of ideas Eventually my.. Fourth I think, phone was a HTC windows mobile 5 device. It was, not so good, in retrospect especially because connecting to HSPDA would drain the battery faster than a game gear, but I had a lot of fun with it, especially flashing my own lovely ROM to it to get wm6

I'm not clicking the article so maybe its a direct comment about making Metaverse stuff profitable. I'm aware the metaverse exists in some functional form but they're absolutely no reason to get on it unless you're doing crypto crimes.

i found all the bits for the other pocketpc today, it turns out it had https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Familiar_Linux on it from 2007 or so installed which was really unstable and janky but thanks to the wayback machine i found instructions on how to turn it back to pocketpc by ymodeming a 16mb rom file over serial to the linux boot loader https://web.archive.org/web/20100713021429/http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/RestoringPocketPc the recovery file wasn't archived but hilariously the file name has exactly 1 google result from some random university ftp an evening well spent!

I have one and the shell plastic has apparently melted down even harder than the Gizmodo (which I also somehow own). Not even sure if that thing turns on anymore and haven't bothered getting out of the sealed bag I put it on when the plastic started to go. It's got an integrated/non-removable battery to make matters worse. I did play some solitaire on it 11-12 years ago.

The Dingoo A320 is another device that flat out refuses to die, I think this one is from 2010 and it holds a charge on the internal battery for years at a time while it's powered off. https://i.imgur.com/sLYUz9B.mp4 Was dingux the the origin of this launcher? I keep seeing it on a whole bunch of more recent cheap retro consoles.
