Two weeks ago: Hey Hotel Kpro here's 128 power supplies that need new Not Calibrated stickers on them Last week: We need 4 of them calibrated Today: We need 12 more calibrated Also today: You need to help out other sections because they have too much work Also last week during some meeting that I missed: Everyone needs to work harder, the backlog keeps going up! Also also today: You had more production than anyone else, but we need you to do more

The shop got a snazzy new website for free last year when an apprentice joined, made by her GF while she was switching offices (very nicely). So that apprentice is in the other shop now, and the site was due for renewal on WIX, we'd been using their messaging system to tie the 4 or 5 ways to contact us into one inbox, it was very helpful, site also had it's own form I got a heap of bookings from. Note I'm using the past loving tense here, because the boss forgot her god drat password about 2 months ago, complained endlessly to the person who set things up, but then at the last minute before her GF stopped working for us, refused to let her help out because she was "busy". She's been back, emailing the boss about how she wont be able to pay for the site going forward, obviously, and finally at the last possible second the boss was like "well the site is broken anyway" and now we don't have a website and all our website related correspondence is gone. She's so loving good at this. She hasn't made enough money to cover my wages this week, I think mine + comms last week wiped her tattoo incomings. The ship isn't sinking yet but it's starting to list dangerously. I had to hold the side of my desk until a panic attack ended there. I'm going to be ok, I just have to wait a little bit longer. I have to learn to enjoy watching someone's business implode

The first pressure cookers were advertised as "Bone Digestors" because you could use them to essentially melt the bones from fish instead of painstakingly remove them. Bone Digestor is really just an amazing metal band name.

This is not a small company, and my last place is part of the same group. The new place won't modernize or change process because we mainly provide engineering services.

I'm not going to make this easy for anyone. Not out of spite, but because I can't have randoms stepping up and demanding action be taken on stuff they aren't supporting correctly. We have apprentices starting who will spend four years working with us while they get their engineering degrees. Until they're qualified they aren't allowed to do, or be trained to do, the job they are officially an apprentice of. This is fine and normal, apparently.

I was just discussing our policy regarding a customer's contract and a coworker disagreed with me, bringing up the mass shooting at the customer last year as grounds for an exception. This would result in the coworker being paid more for landing the contract. It's not fair! How am I supposed to counter an argument built around mass murder? The coworker wants an exception to apply so they get more money. I assume this is normally used when the contract landed is exceptionally valuable. Or are they asking for hazard pay because working with these people is still a risk?

goatface posted:Why would that make their contract more valuable? I don't want to give away too much information about my job, the company's business model, or the client, but this is a useful analogy for understanding what happened. Imagine if senior executives offered a heavy discount out of sympathy for the customer's mass shooting. The deal would not have happened without this discount. And the person on the ground who implemented the deal is asking to be credited as though there was no discount.

Does he happen to be associated with the mass murderer? Or perhaps even have a surprising likeness with the police sketch of the murderer based on witness testimonies?

OH, they disagreed with you bringing it up as an exception to the normal process. I was reading it as they disagreed with you about some aspect of the contract processing, and then they brought up the mass murder as a justification why they should be paid more.

I just remembered a dumb thing my old employer did. One year they decided to give everyone a Christmas bonus. It was great! Everyone got $500, and then an additional $500 that they had to give to other coworkers in $100 increments (everyone privately emailed their picks to HR). So if everyone hated you, you at least got $500, and if you were helpful to everyone, you could get a boatload. The next year, both amounts were dropped to $300, which was disappointing but I was still happy. The third year (and last year I worked there), the guaranteed amount was removed entirely, so essentially the company gave everyone $300 and said "give it to someone else and hope." There were several people who just didn't get anything, not because they weren't liked, but because they weren't anyone's top 3 favorite people, which then made everyone feel bad. It would've been better for morale if they hadn't given anyone anything.

Not to mention the fact that people could have gotten the Christmas bonus from coworkers for reasons that had nothing to do with job performance. For example, if I was a young woman working there, and I got gifted thousands of dollars from my largely male coworkers, I would feel gross.
