AngryBooch posted:lmao a literal HARD DRIVE is up for best gaming hardware. Bro what are we doing here? There's also a keyboard, a headset, and an ultrawide monitor. all of which are pretty much generic and just as good as anything else with the same general shape. There are only 2 actually interesting pieces of hardware on the list: The playstation vr thing, and the "nitro deck" which is some kinda third party switch case+controller combo that at least looks like it does something new

Lol at the three categories Starfield got a pity nom in. Audio and visual design especially: forgettable generic space music, standard sci-fi effect noises, even the signature cutscenes they make you watch 40 times doesn't really have a good musical sting to accompany it. Looked worse than Fallout 4 since they bailed on environmental design.

it's telling that BG3 continues to sit firmly near the top of the steam best seller charts two months out while starfield's barely a month into release and has already dropped well below it i'm sure todd will make another big cartoon sack of money off it, but i can't help but feel like bethesda's finally starting to run into the same dreary shoals of diminishing returns that marvel has firmly beached themselves on

I played some Wo Long tonight and I am finding it a lot more accesssible for me than Nioh. The deflection skill makes me feel pretty godlike and I have less things to manage when fighting. I am on the second mission with the Akira Horse Slide Guy and just got to the big boss who pancaked me immediately. I gotta learn the timings!

Darktide had an update yesterday that redid all the character talent trees and it's a ton of fun. For instance the Ogryn can customize their loadout to include a single king-sized grenade:

The deflection skill makes me feel pretty godlike and I have less things to manage when fighting. nioh is a fun set of games but it's also deeply, deeply impenetrable because of team ninja's love of Systems. most of the core mechanics are comprehensible from the jump, but then it lobs, like, 4 different progression systems at you at once, and that's too overwhelming even for a nuts-and-bolts kinda guy like me wo long was their attempt to make their third person ARPG formula more broadly accessible, and i think they did a drat fine job. it'd probably be my GotY if BG3 hadn't come out, but it's still an excellent pickup regardless

Yeah wo long is a lot more comprehensible than nioh, maybe almost too simplified as you really can get through most of the game with just the two basic attack buttons and deflects, but it’s a pretty solid action game with razor sharp controls and great feel Also try stranger of paradise if you liked the idea of nioh but found it too overwhelming, SOP is much more approachable than nioh while still having more going on than dark souls with a lot of cool classes to try out.

One of my major complaints with Nioh is that it just dropped loot nonstop, so rather than meaningful upgrades it was just non-stop 0.5%-1% increases and there was so MUCH of it. I read later that 'the real game' opens up later and upgrades make sense then, but like.. you're just overwhelming players until then and expecting them to know that. Just have a system of 'here is your weapon, it does cool stuff' Hoping to get Lies of P when it goes on sale, cause it sounds very similar to Bloodborne.

I put Dredge and System Shock on the Deck today for spooky season, my goal is to finish them by Halloween which shouldn't be hard, but finishing games in general is not really a thing I do so here's to having goals!

The gameplay feels a bit slower and more methodical than bloodborne. You can really hack and slash in BB and it encourages you to get aggressive but I don’t get that with Pinocchio. Big on punishes rather than just aggression. It owns tho. I bet the devs were clenching for years hoping Sony wouldn’t announce Bloodborne remake or a patch and I hope they get to make a sequel.

The Playdate system I ordered finally arrived the other day, it's basically a gameboy-esque device with only two buttons (no start/select), a d pad, and a little crank on the side of the device that you spin to do stuff in games. I bought it as more of a cute novelty than anything else but it's got some fun stuff that I pull out every now and then.
