You see it all the time in the war but they have a seriously inflated sense of their own importance that borders on delusion. I would guess this is a side effect of diaspora mythmaking in a safe environment, but whenever it's put to the test the balloon just pops.

Also even at the time they were demanding these things, German, Italian and Ukrainian immigrants which were the big three in the first half of the 20th c were being overtaken by Asians and Indians. Additionally, indigenous people are literally, by constitution and treaty, nations, and we haven't given them those language rights so it raises a bunch of questions. Indigenous nations have a direct relationship to the Crown, they don't even have to go through Canada, so again... why the gently caress would the Ukrainians be granted more status than them? Racism, I know, but the idea was just to spite Quebec and never actually give them a bicultural society while preventing the Troubles from breaking out here. The Ukrainians were not useful beyond Official Multiculturalism. Now, if there is another immigration wave of Political Ukrainians, and it's steered towards Quebec, to suppress their nationalism instead of prairie socialism, I can absolutely see them demanding that all Quebecers learn Ukrainian, services be offered in Ukrainian etc. because as the loyal little foot soldiers they are, they'd be Ottawa's guarantee against another referendum, terrorist campaign or revolt. I don't think we're going to get that level of funny outcome though.

The more I think about it, the more it would rhyme historically, because Maria Theresa named the lands of the Polish Partition "Galicia" after her favourite lost Spanish province. Maria Theresa was allied with France in the Seven Years War in which Britain won Canada. New France being reconstituted as New (new) Galicia would appropriately bookend the Wars of Spanish and Austrian Succession, where the Hapsburgs lost Galicia, the Partition of Poland, where they recreated it, and the Seven Years War, where the British took New France. Old (new) Galicia can be reconstituted as a Jewish homeland, as originally intended, by incorporating it as a non-contiguous part of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Who brought about the present series of wars that caused all of this upset? An Austrian, A Prussian and Pole, and a Hannovarian, exactly the same people responsible for the aforementioned three 18th c wars.

My favorite part of NAFO thought justifying how they are totally winning the war is the secret mobilization they've cooked up where Russia has (without anyone knowing) grabbed hundreds of thousands of conscripts out of their homes beyond the officially announced mobilization / contract soldiers and these secret hundreds of thousands are the ones dying in the human wave attacks. They need to believe in this because Ukrainian claims of Russian troop casualties / kia (something approaching 300,000 dead and implicitly 2-3x that number wounded) make no loving sense whatsoever when placed in context of how many Russian soldiers are known to have been mustered / are still claimed to be present in the theater (400,000+ and growing btw as per Ukrainian / pro west sources) **but yeah, it's a hell of a trip when in the same week you can read speculation on these forums in the media that Russia had just sent their very last reserves into the battle in a desperate attempt to hold onto the line while in the exact same week a Ukrainian military source says the Russians have 425,000 soldiers still in Ukraine and 70-80% of their forces are in the rear and not currently engaged in fighting. My understanding of Russia's total numbers dedicated thus far: -190k from the armed forces at the start, plus 30k between the DPR and LPR, and then let's say 50k from Wagner -September 2022, there's the partial mobilization of reservists which came out to 300k -something along the lines of 300k volunteers throughout 2023 -Russia has a yearly separate conscription drive where they recruit around 250k into service, but I'm not sure if those numbers actually went to Ukraine. It's hard to say how many of those post Feb. 2022 numbers have actually seen combat, but perhaps an estimate around 800k has seen some kind of combat is reasonable. On Ukraine's side, they declared martial law immediately, called up all their reservists, and have been conscripting nonstop since. A hawkish US think tank posted an estimation that Ukraine has brought about 2 million into the armed forces to serve in some capacity, close to 10% of the prewar population. At that point manpower becomes a significant problem, and there are signs of that in how Ukraine has expanded their definition for able-bodied combatants and pressing the EU to extradite refugees. If that 2 million figure for Ukraine is correct, it actually would make sense for Ukraine to have around 200k war dead without seeing their lines fall apart.
