The books about 1973 are very funny in light of western states being hollowed out and having given everything to Ukraine,

"This is a war that Israel never thought was possible. Surprised by the fury and excellent execution of the Arab onslaught, and perhaps more than a little complacent, Israel suddenly found itself on the point of losing a war because of a lack of ammunition, planes and tanks. The United States, after much vacillation, finally elected to help Israel, beginning a tremendous airlift (code name: Operation Nickel Grass) which incurred the wrath of the Arab states, and their sponsor, the Soviet Union.

Fortunately the airlift came just in time for Israeli ground forces to stabilize their positions and eventually turn the tide in the Sinai and Golan Heights. And it was all made possible by an operation that dwarfed the Berlin Airlift and the Soviets' simultaneous efforts in Egypt and Syria."

Does not bode well for Israel. By pure coincidence, the US destroyed the two Arab armies Israel was most afraid of, Syria and Iraq, in the past decades.

Khodr quoted a statement from a Hezbollah-affiliated politician as saying that what Hamas has accomplished against the Israelis showed that “Israel is vulnerable and its military superiority has ended.”

“It is no longer an invincible force. Israel can be defeated,” the statement from the unnamed Hezbollah member, added.

Not by Omission: The Case of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War

In this book, first published in Hebrew in 1975 and now available in English for the first time with an introduction by Noam Chomsky, Amnon Kapeliouk traces the policies and attitudes that led to the 1973 Arab-Israel war. He describes the multiple diplomatic overtures from Egyptian presidents Nasser and Sadat after 1967 that Israel ignored or contemptuously rejected, as well as the complacent attitude that had become fully entrenched in the Israeli military establishment. On the political level, the triumvirate of Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan and Israel Galili feature prominently as a study in arrogance and incompetence. Kapeliouk also notes the protest movement that arose among active-duty soldiers as well as veterans in the wake of the war demanding political accountability for the failures of the war. Finally, the book examines Israel’s policy of colonizing the territories occupied in 1967, starting with the Golan Heights and later spreading to the West Bank (“Judaea and Samaria”) and the Sinai – a policy that did much to convince the leaders of Arab states that war was their only option.

Why are the people who have racial contempt for their enemies always being caught by surprise?

:thunk:

Israeli Culture on the Road to the Yom Kippur War

The surprise of the Yom Kippur War (1973) rivals that of the other two major strategic surprises in the twentieth century—Operation Barbarossa, the German surprise attack on the Soviet Union and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The major difference between these events is that Israeli intelligence had a lot more and better quality information leading up to the attack than did the Soviet Union or the United States prior to those attacks. Why, then, was the beginning of the Yom Kippur War such a surprise?
While many scholars have tried to explain why Israel was caught unawares despite its sophisticated military intelligence services, Dalia Gavriely-Nuri looks beyond the military, intelligence, and political explanations to a cultural explanation. Israeli Culture on the Road to the Yom Kippur War reveals that the culture that evolved in Israel between the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War played a large role in the surprise. Gavriely-Nuri’s analysis provides new and innovative insights into the relationship between culture and socio-political phenomena and security.

One Day I Will Return To Your Side.
Here is my unironic level headed analysis of the current situation as of now:-

1- The fact that Hamas has managed to perform what they did with just 1000 fighters is beyond astounding, it's a military and political and intelligence miracle.

2- Its clear that now that the initial shock has landed, the israelis are going to try and put their foot forward, their massive bombing runs and their call up of their reservists and they are moving down all their tanks in a bid to regain control of the situation.

3- I think the goal of Hamas was two-fold, to deal the israelis a massive blow, to break the siege in a spectacular way, which they did, and also to capture POW's to gain a big bargaining chip, which they also did.

4- I am not surprised at all that the west bank hasnt exploded, FATAH and the PA are complete zionist puppets and have build a typical arab fascist dictatorship, but hopefully something can topple abbas's fat rear end off his chair.

5- However, of course it's plainly obvious that Israel has a far bigger war machine, so I dont think Hamas will actually try to keep anything they gained, and I think they already were aware of this and planned accordingly, so I think they also had another goal, they were probably aware that such a massive action will invite a response that is way above and beyond the normal responses, including a ground invasion, which might actually be something they have extensively planned and prepared for, I think the strategy is trying to lure the Israelis into a massive fight in the gaza strip, which will end up blowing up alot of merkavas and killing lots of Israeli troops.

6- I think the Israelis are well aware that they're walking into the trap, but the fact that they've been humiliated so thoroughly and the fact that the biden administration is probably pressuring Israel to try and secure a decisive win so they can get saudi Arabia to normalize with israel might actually be forcing them into this trap.

7- In my heart of hearts, I dont think Hezbollah will enter the war, however I'm a fat idiot nerd so what do I know. but lets say IF what the egyptian back channel is saying is true and Hezbollah will enter the conflict if israel launches a ground invasion, then we're in a completely different world, and with the combination of Hezbollah in the north and Hamas in the south Iran will have checkmated israel in every way. Israel built everything on being a complete fortress and now that people know that fortress was made of poo poo and mud that regime will have lost all of it's supposed prestige and prowess they yelped about for decades.

8- however, even if somehow everything goes back to the status quo, Israel now has an incredibly adept fighting force facing them in Gaza that is able to dish out an incredible military victory against them, trained and supplied by the same people who defeated them in Lebanon, and who defeated their buddies in the gulf in Yemen, which is an absolute nightmare scenario for the israelis.
