I'm guessing he meant that he intended to make chief prior to 12 years, but I initially read this as "every good sailor should go to mast at least once during their career".

Some of my absolute favorite SNCOs to work under were red-striper E-6s and E-7s. Kinda like mustang officers, they just had a way less lovely vibe.

Thanks for the info regarding HYT.

And no, he was insinuating that you should make chief before the 12 year point. I have no clue if he ever made it. He was kind of a lovely sailor so I assume he made senior chief.

About the dude being a gold IT2. The only thing I can think of is that he cross-rated over and is not doing so great for test knowledge in an IWC rate. When I was active about a decade ago, we had a crossrate from the Seabees who was a good dude, great at Navy stuff, but struggled with IS work compared to peers. Thankfully we were Staff and were about to get him CAPed to IS2 and then he made IS1 eventually. If I needed Navy stuff done or interacting with ship's company that weren't Ops folks, he was my guy; if I needed intel analysis or a powerpoint done, I had another IS3/IS2 to do that.

literally both times I made IT1 I had nothing but my 3.6 PMA straight up 3.0 P evals, only had 4 award points. no time in rate. made it first time up both times up. If you cant make IT1 you should not be an IT period. It's like 30+% to IT1. So every 6 months the top 30% rolls off. If you cant eventually be in that top 30% rerate BM.

Unfortunately in my experience 60-80% of IT's are trash. Can barely follow the MRC's even if they do they have no comprehension of what they are actually doing. Constantly zeroized the SKL. Frequent security violations. The few good one's usually jump ship after 8-10 years when they know enough to get contract jobs. In my experiences my ITC's barely knew how to log into NMCI. I had one who was good at KMI, but he was a vault rat and couldn't tech to save his life, he couldn't chief either, but that's another discussion.

The biggest issue is A and C schools basically now have a zero wash policy. They WILL push you through. Back in my day if you failed A+. you washed out of A school, if you failed Sec+ you washed out of C school and were basically reduced to being a radioman only as admin rights required Sec+ ( and still does for all other branches).

Without a wash mechanism to weed out the tards we get stuck with a ton of IT2's who dont know poo poo from shoeshine due to the 100% advancement rate to E5.

My guy, you are drinking the wrong mai tais. In fact they probably arent even actual mai tais. There is absolutely zero fruit juice in a maitai, only 1 oz of citrus (lime)

2 ounces of 17-year-old J. Wray Nephew Jamaican Rum ( any aged gold rum will do, I prefer Zacapa XO or diplomatico blue)
½ ounce Holland De Kuyper Orange Curaçao (contreau is a better substitute)
½ ounce French Garnier Orgeat (almond syrup, sold as orgeat syrup in most higher end liquor stores usually by finest call or trader vic's DO NOT BUY TORANI ALMOND)
¼ ounce Rock Candy Syrup (made your own simple syrup, but use rock sugar instead of granulated)
Juice from one whole lime

Hale Koa has the best tasting mai tai on Oahu regardless of the price of its constituent ingredients, but if you wanna pay 3x the price for a worse mai tai at Duke's then go right ahead.

(p.s. if there's no orgeat syrup in it it's just sparkling tropical cocktail)

E: sorry to my coner compatriots, but I watched 2 nukes get masted, suspended busts and ½ months x 2 for a tagout violation that had no adverse effect on people or equipment, then watched 2 a-gangers get their's dismissed after blowing all of aft trim into the bilge because they didn't "have the right level of knowledge" when they guessed what position a valve was in and hung a tag on it.

Yeah, plus the Navy focuses more on how well you slob a knob rather than if you know your job. To make matters worse IT's dont even do the entire A school curriculum any more. They get half of it (3 months) sent to the fleet, and then they go back to san diego or Pensacola for "part 2" like 6 months to a year later. and then its only 2 weeks.

They tried to do that with FC's for a long time. They called it master/journeyman/apprentice and the idea was you'd get more technical training the longer you were in because the Navy was sick of losing FC/FCA's after one enlistment. It never happened though.

Rock candy syrup is typically just 3:1 simple syrup. I make mine with demerara sugar for a hint of molasses flavor. You can also make your own orgeat if you’re a psycopath; It’s just fresh-pressed almond milk made into a 2:1 simple syrup. (Adjust your syrup to account for the liquid you used to make the almond milk.)

Also, strong recommend for Smith and Cross rum.
