I could be wrong, but I don't think it was livestreamed. But she was murdered and pictures of the body were posted to her socials from her phone.

i heard that when the attacks first broke the news. People were saying Hamas logged into her phone and posted her death to Facebook, but I saw nobody with the link or any corroboration so I'm assuming it was just a rumour, until I hear otherwise.

Edit: Perhaps I was wrong.

This is on another level, it’s absolutely breathtaking and monstrous.

I also note that there was a pro-Palestine rally in Sydney, Australia but it has absolutely been condemned across the political spectrum and for Sydney, extremely small. It’s been brutal though for my Jewish/Israeli friends, who either have family involved or are on the end of some pretty shithouse commentary - a friend at uni who was wearing her Star of David copped some antisemitic comments from the local Socialist Alternative crew.

I agree with you, it’s just really hard when even major universities in Australia become unsafe for Jewish people due to conflating Israel with Judaism more broadly. I guess in my experience, in my area, the two have gone hand in hand.

Wasn’t it just a couple years ago they bombed a school and hospital which forced the other imperial powers to produce meek statements asking them to kindly stop? There have also been relatively high profile pogroms in Israel against Muslims the past couple of years as well.

Collective punishment, resettlement, and ethnic cleansing are nothing new for Israel.

Collateral damage is the side effect to the response to arming 700+ civilians. Any country on the planet would do the same. Hamas is responsible, no one else.

Unfortunately rather than targeting people who committed warcrimes, hundreds of thousands of children are being collectively targeted indiscriminately. Israel is responsible for that, no one else.

I’m really not sure how I can agree with this, unless you’re arguing that the state of Israel is influencing the discourse coming from the pro-Palestinian activists in my area. I’m not talking about the way that the Israeli state media tries to portray things, this is just the experiences and actions from the actual activists.

The US committed a bunch of atrocities post 9/11 but even we didn't straight up strategic bomb entire neighborhoods in Kabul after walling it up and preventing everyone from leaving the region. If this is Israel's opening move then I think that term will be horrifyingly appropriate for the campaign they're beginning to wage.

fwiw up thread I was also condemning the rave massacre and other civilian directed attacks as a tactically useless atrocity by Hamas. But the reprisals on this scale and with this level of collective punishment are even less defensible, especially given Israel's absurdly superior military might.

ive started to see this talking point spread around social media that it was the 'bloodiest single day for jews since the holocaust' and expect it to be repeated a lot in the coming days

was curious and that claim appears to be correct from what I've looked up; there were 6000 civilians deaths between '47-'49 over a two-year period, '73 had ~2,000 deaths over a two-week period with the vast majority of them soldiers and the deadliest bombing during the second intifada was 30 people. the deadliest attack outside of Israel since the holocaust was the bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires in 1994 with 85 deaths.

Yes it may well be and it all happened on Bibi Netanyahu's watch and under his security strategies while he ignored significant intelligence providing information of these attacks.

It's a very, very bad look for him and I don't see it going very well for him or his party. I don't think this is comparable to 9/11 at all as in general prior to 9/11; islamic terrorism wasn't really on the radar in the US. Hamas has been a constant threat to Israel.

The response of indiscriminate attacks on the civilians of Gaza by Israel are not unexpected. This is just part of the eternal endless circular cycle of increasing violence.

The only way to prevent these kind of situations is de-escalation, peace agreements, truth commissions and mutual forgiveness. This includes forgiving war-criminals, terrorists, and other people guilty for atrocious crimes on both sides. This is really the only thing that has ever stopped or solved this kind of situation. Look into the IRA Peace Talk and agreements or the Colombian Peace Process.

Anything else will inevitably lead to more deaths, murders, war-crimes, and eventual genocide. The stakes are far too high and both sides are far too dug in and convicted for anything else to happen.

Israel deliberately presents itself as The Jewish State in the Jewish Homeland for Jews. They want to cultivate the Israel=Judaism connection because it encourages sympathy for their barbaric actions so that when you criticize Israel you’re labeled an anti-Semite. Not a whole lotta Jews ‘round these parts but it’s why every one I’ve met hates Israel because it means they feel they have to answer for Israel’s crimes even though they’ve never been there and never want to be.

You can't really ever have fascism without eventual uprisings, and the people you torture eventually end up torturing you. All the pieces matter.

I was curious about the chants outside the Sydney Opera House, so I looked up some articles. I found the following:

"free Palestine"
"shame Israel"
“Resistance is justified when Palestine is occupied,”
“occupation is the crime”
“Palestine will be free”.
"Apartheid, wrong in South Africa, wrong in Palestine"
'Allahu Akbar'
Which seem like reasonable rallying cries to me.

However, the following do not:
'death to the Jews'
'gently caress the Jews'
'gas the jews'

"gently caress Israel" was also chanted, but that one could go either way, imo.

Of course this doesn't this doesn't measure the length, volume or participations of the chants, so it's not really a scientific analysis.

Dirty bombs are pointless, they're a boogeyman made up to scare people. They are not in any real way more damaging than regular bombs. Because of how the explosion spreads around the radioactive material over such a large area in such fine particulates, as long as everybody in the effected area takes a shower at some point, and it either rains and/or you get somebody with a hose to hose off buildings in the area, there's no real chance of radiation poisoning or cancer or what have you.

But yeah, Hamas can't stop. As long as the Palestinians are oppressed by Israel, basic human dignity requires that they fight back. The only hope is that they can somehow force Israel to negotiate in something like good faith, which seems unlikely.
