Did a couple of episodes of Fall of House of Usher. Eh, meh, maybe. Certainly it's very much a Flanagan production: Carla Gugino seems like she's going to ominously appear every episode and spend a good few minutes delivering an unhurriedly-paced, langorous monologue about fate or consequences. We will have sudden scary faces flashing up in the foreground and unseen ghosts lingering spookily in the background. The acid shower sequence at the orgy was good fun, but as with Hill House it feels like the text's themes and ideas are getting lost for the sake of a fresh reinterpretation that's...not bad, but certainly not better than the original. The Masque of the Red Death is a story about the super-rich believing their wealth can shield them from sickness and death, which is a perfect morality tale for our current age of billionaire freaks undergoing de-aging procedures or having 10 children so their genius sperm can live on. Turning that into a story about feckless 20-somethings who get massacred by Carla in a skeleton mask for the crimes of being young, rich, pansexual and horny feels retrograde, but it's also just not as interesting or as cutting as the source material.

1995 isn't early CGI, it's just an example of bad CGI. Like there's still a vibe there, but this is well after Jurassic Park and more than a decade after Pixar's first short.

Halloween TV show sounds terrible unless they finally make it the anthology series John Carpenter wanted. But they won't. Also I just turned on my TV to see the opening of a movie I wasn't familiar with. It was cool and tense, and I could tell it was an 80s movie...and suddenly the girl in the scene gets absolutely stabbed with an ice pick and the title appears: Friday the 13th Part 2!  I won't get to watch a Friday the 13th movie tomorrow so this is a nice surprise! I'm hosting a horror movie event for work on that day...and management said no to our original proposed double feature of Halloween and Friday the 13th because of the nudity and I'm really salty about it. We eventually got them to agree to Scream (2022) and The Black Phone but it's so stupid that violence and child abduction is fine but God forbid adults see a titty during an 18+ Halloween event. Hmph. I'm going to have to pause my watch of Friday Part 2 to stream Willy's Wonderland to some friends and finish it up afterwards since I promised I'd do that at 8. I'm double fisting horror movies over here.
