Bike dudes love those clipless pedals because it’s one more thing they can use to pretend that they’re super serious bike racers. They’re kind of the “giant spoiler on the back of a civic” for the bicycle set

My husband got his first set of clip pedals this summer because he entered in his very first big boy road race, a Gran Fondo, and got all excited about getting "serious" with biking. Very first thing he did after having the pedals installed was rip around the block, skid on some gravel, and absolutely eat poo poo. If he hadn't been wearing a heavy jacket it would have been an ER trip. As it was, he tore the sleeve off the jacket and I had to scrub out his elbow and put some of those sticky stitch bandages on it. There's only a tiny scar now. He was more upset that he tore a hole in his new clip shoes and it ruined his aerodynamics. We had to glue the hole shut so it wouldn't catch the wind anymore. He did enjoy the Gran Fondo but it was like 35 loving degrees celcius that day and he had to DNF due to heat stroke with like less than 10k to go which was disappointing. He also got a wicked helmet-hole-shaped sunburn on his scalp because he didn't think to put sunscreen under his helmet... I hung out in a fancy hotel room and drank iced coffee and ate donuts and poo poo all day while he sweated on his bike in the sun (I did go for a nice 10km hike before it got too hot though)

Mine was several months in to using them and I just started tipping over at a red light in front of the busiest boulevard in my city with hundreds of people around. They're great for multi-day bike camping trips where you're going to get dirty and wet and don't want to be sliding off the pedals. The only other thing I use them for is my fixed gear to keep my feet locked on

Man, I bike a 70km round trip to work and back 3x a week in steelcap boots and cargo pants. Have I been doing it wrong the whole time? Bikenfreude, as an sixish year old I'd only ever had bikes that braked when you backpedaled, so the first time I took off on a mountain bike down a hill I had no idea how to stop it or slow it down, I ended up getting thrown off it, hit a tree, broke my arm and knocked myself out cold. A lady was driving past and saw it, then took it on herself to take me to hospital, this being pre cell phone I had no ID or way of contact my parents so all they had to go off was my equally young friends description of a car I'd been put into when he came back to tell them. The police, in a tale as old as time, were loving useless and told my parents not to panic and they'd probably get a call from a doctors office soon to come get me. Fortunately they weren't listening to that bullshit and went around visiting the doctors and then the hospital asking for a kid of my description and found me.
