So my good, soft furbaby Norton passed away at the end of September from a massive heart attack. I've been on the mend the past few days and was able to match a kitty in need of a home with my home in need of a kitty. Meet Vera (named by the shelter):  She's very vocal and is enjoying exploring her new home.

 We lost our old man, [Dijon-Pierre] Mustard, in July, sixteen years and one day after my wife rescued him from an apartment building where a bunch of rat bastard kids were throwing rocks at him and his sister. He was my daughter’s bestest friend, he let her use him as a pillow when she was a baby.  We’ve since adopted this little butterball, Geordi. She had to have both eyes removed, having had severe infections in each.  She is every bit as plush as she looks. The pictures don’t even do her justice. Oh my god is she so snuggly. She likes to lie on her side and pounce, pushing off the wall with her rear feetsies. She’s a weird little angel food cake.  Bonus pic of this li’l idiot, Sir Beetroot. I call him Kevin. Or Carl. Completely understandable that early man domesticated the wolf. I can imagine ever since the first human-like synapse fired in prehistoric man, they were thinking "drat, look at those cute guys! I just wanna pet them. They may kill one of us from time to time, but I just gotta pet them. Think, Grug, THINK! How can I pet one of these guys?!"

They've been returning to my area in the Netherlands and it was a thing in the media for a while because occasionally a farmer would lose a sheep or whatever but gently caress that, that's nature and I hope they actually come back proper. There's like literally 0 dangerous wildlife here anyway so unless you're literally a toddler left alone in the wild there's no downside to having wolves roaming around doing their thing. It's not like we're lacking for cattle lol.

I'm sure wolves were domesticated independently many times in many places, but my personal theory on how it most often happened is exactly that: someone saw a wolf cub or a litter of them without parents, got hit by our powerful mammalian instinct to go "awwwww" at anything with an infant-like ratio of eyes-to-head and head-to-body, and suddenly they're raising furry babies. Not domesticated yet, not by a long shot, but as that adult goes out into the world and brings them the "technology" of "these specific humans will give you food," that becomes a competitive advantage. It's either that, or some prehistoric person had their baby stolen and decided that the only thing that could right this wrong was to create the pug. For the wolf fans here, there's a documentary on the Yellowstone wolves called War of the Wolf Packs that has some astonishing footage of their private lives and pack dynamics over generations. It's an unflinching view of wolf interactions in the wild, and the thumbnail they chose is one of the more violent parts of the documentary, so I won't link it directly. Highly recommended if you're fascinated by these beautiful creatures and have some tolerance for the "red in tooth and claw" aspects of their lives.
