George Santos, in his capacity as head of child services, will dismiss the case against himself.

I mean it is funny but you're also watching in real time as Republicans yet again rebel because their guy didn't want to use his frankly slim amount of procedural authority to completely upend American governance for an indeterminate amount of time. 'Don't bring a budget to the floor, slow roll all bills for weeks or years to bring the government to its knees' may not be as blatant as 'make Pence overturn the election' but it's still trying to find ways to weaponize procedure. I'm not sure what the solution to that is.

Ultimately, some of the people in Congress are bad faith actors; they vary from wanting something that they don't have anything remotely close to the power needed to enact, to not caring if it all burns down, to actively seeking the destruction of Federal power. If there's a system which can overcome this kind of rot among the people elected to it, I'm certainly not aware of it. Once they have some power, zealots and lunatics can always find procedural means to screw things up to some degree if they really want to, and the remedy has typically been that the central mass of a given party knows how to handle the kooks and never let them near anything important in the first place.

That's actually a decent point he's making, but he's forgetting that there's a third option, which is deadlock until the next election.

Deadlock is the 200ish option. Before that is every other member of the Republican caucus.

Plus the moderates generally are smarter than the suicide caucus, so they're probably doing dumb calculus to set up the triumphant return of McCarthy.

Just  at the idea that Jim Jordan's candidacy is so powerful that Republicans are asking for help defeating him. It's only slightly less ridiculous than claiming that Mitt Romney is begging Schumer for help to keep Ted Cruz from winning the annual Most Popular Senator award. The dysfunctional disaster that is the House Republican Caucus doesn't just empower the most insane members. 5 "moderate" Republicans can also team up to keep the absolute lunatics from running the asylum. And if Scalise can't convince enough people to vote for him, then there's no way an even less likable shithead is going to do it.

Besides, the idea that Democrats are going to get huge concessions in exchange for their King Making votes is fantasy. Anything they get is going to have to be arcane enough that it's hard for primary challengers to rise up and incite the Republican Base. No Republican who has anything to do with official power sharing, let alone Speaker Jeffries, is going to have a job in 2025. The best that Democrats can get is a change to the rules that lets them put forward bills for a vote without being blocked by the Speaker or Committee Chairs. Because an esoteric path for an up or down vote while Republicans continue their circus for the cameras is a manageable unconscionable betrayal of God and Country in the 2024 primaries.

The Louisiana Democratic Party is loving pathetic. I live in a district with a socialist state house rep who is often at odds with the state party, and the state party decided to recruit a centrist Dem to primary her and dumped a bunch of money into the race, and they got completely dump trucked today. They can't even win their own primaries anymore. They spent over $100,000 to get 25% in a loving state rep race.

They didn't do poo poo for Shawn Wilson and it's clear it they'd put up a tenth of a fight we'd at least have a runoff for governor

I expect it will roll into shutdown, some less-crazy/more-business republicans will eventually be convinced that selling themselves as cross-aisle negotiation 'get-er-done' mavericks will work and do a temporary rules change and longer term status-quo preserving CR with democratic votes, leopards will eat their faces in the next GOP primaries, and they will retire to corporate lobbying.

Government employees and people dependent on social safety net (SNAP, FQHC hospitals, ...) will get harmed in the meantime.

I personally doubt that negotiations with the Democratic side of the house are ever going to happen, but I do believe that Jordan is done-zo.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/15/politics/jim-jordan-house-republicans-speaker/index.html

quote:

One senior Republican House member who is part of the opposition to Jordan told CNN that there he believes there are roughly 40 “no” votes, and that he has personally spoken to 20 members who are willing to go to the floor and block Jordan’s path if the Ohio Republican forces a roll-call vote on Tuesday.

“The approximately 20 I’ve talked to know we must be prepared,” the member said. “We cannot let the small group dictate to the whole group. They want a minority of the majority to dictate and as a red-blooded American I refuse to be a victim.”

I don’t think the country can make it to January 2025 without passing legislation of any kind. For one thing, a >1 year government shutdown will end in mass resignations and the complete collapse of the federal bureaucracy. The last shutdown ended when it looked like all civilian air activity was going to halt. Can’t wait to see what exerts enough pressure to end this one

I complete agree that the results would be so catastrophic that it basically "can't be allowed to happen", but if you asked me to articulate one believable scenario where a speaker is installed I'm totally out of ideas. Unstoppable force meets unmovable object I guess.
