Maybe he was prepared to defend himself in court, judging by his win:loss ratio, it seems the odds are in his favour.

That third panel of the first comic just makes it. It's still funny if you remove it, but that panel included just makes it top tier.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

This might be a bit of a spoiler but all stand up comedians write all this stuff. It's all made it and written performed the same way every night. None of it is true, none of it is off the cuff. They might do a bit of crowd work to move between the written sections but more often not.

Even that Stewart Lee bit is written like that.

Bo Burham does a bit about it as well.

Honestly it has to be hard, knowing that your preferred form of transportation is responsible for a lot of the economic and infrastructure problems in vast swaths of the country. There are definitely car-brained people who sit in silence and take their lumps anytime it comes up, but the people who engage are clearly struggling to defend their decades-lost argument and that's probably frustrating.

There's a difference between bits and stories. Bits are there not just for a laugh but to make a point, typically they're anecdotal, so they don't have to be true. Stories on the other hand might have some embellishment but generally mostly are true, depending on whether they're a natural storyteller type comic, Mike Birbiglia is one of these. You're right that most of it is not off the cuff but as a comic in a pretty thriving scene, with tons of nationally touring headliners rolling through, you can pretty well tell (as a comic at least) whether their crowdwork is formulaic or not or whether actual improv is happening onstage (it's rare but it happens, Rory Scovel does actual off the cuff things, although at the very least might have topics written down). And then there are some comics who end up getting nowhere because crowdwork and improv are ALL they can do but can't write for poo poo; and that's pretty much the dividing line for comics, those who can write and those who can't. Then you get comics like me who are jokey joke jokerson because I'm neither anecdotal nor a good storyteller

As a resident of Edinburgh, how did your run at the festival go then? It sounds like you'd fit right in.

In fact even better if you didn't bother writing any material like literally half the shows. They need to put hard limits on the amount of improv shows.

Man, I bike a 70km round trip to work and back 3x a week in steelcap boots and cargo pants. Have I been doing it wrong the whole time?

Bikenfreude, as an sixish year old I'd only ever had bikes that braked when you backpedaled, so the first time I took off on a mountain bike down a hill I had no idea how to stop it or slow it down, I ended up getting thrown off it, hit a tree, broke my arm and knocked myself out cold.

A lady was driving past and saw it, then took it on herself to take me to hospital, this being pre cell phone I had no ID or way of contact my parents so all they had to go off was my equally young friends description of a car I'd been put into when he came back to tell them.
The police, in a tale as old as time, were loving useless and told my parents not to panic and they'd probably get a call from a doctors office soon to come get me. Fortunately they weren't listening to that bullshit and went around visiting the doctors and then the hospital asking for a kid of my description and found me.

Midsummer, between 3rd and 4th grade, I was biking home alone (as usual for summer) from the rec center some 1-1/2 miles from home when things took a turn for the weird. I instantly (as far as I was concerned) went from happy-kid-on-a-bike-in-summer to waking-up-on-an-elderly-couple’s-couch-spitting-blood-into-a-bowl. The bowl had entirely too much blood in it.

They explained that they’d called my mom and an ambulance. When I asked how they knew my name and number, they calmly explained that I told them as they were helping me from the street into their house. They’d found me out there with a destroyed 20” Huffy, laying in a considerable pool of blood. Turns out I’d received three broken front teeth and a gnarly concussion, with one of the extremely sharp broken teeth slicing open my upper lip to the tune of seven stitches.

I still have no recollection of being struck (let alone seeing anything dangerous.) The same goes for the conversation and trip into the house.

Concussions (and the 1980s) suck.

[ASK] ME ABOUT MY LOVE FOR 1'S
I got amnesia from a bike accident when I was 7. My friend and I were playing chicken on our bikes and neither of us flinched. This being the 80s, helmets were for nerds, so I flew off my bike, landed on my head and got knocked out.

I woke up some time later on our couch and had no idea who I was, who my family was or what happened. I know it’s common to not remember much from early childhood but I remember nothing before first grade.

At some point a frying pan's gonna conk you on the head, and then there's gonna be a very confused 7-year-old in an adult's body hoping their bike's okay.
