Not a Poland expert by any means, but PiS are authoritarian, religious shitheads.

Not sure how much of an actual impact it makes for Ukraine, they've made some noises about Ukraine help lately, but at the end of the day, they still hate Russia with the power of a thousand suns. Assuming the exit polls are broadly correct, it's good that they are out anyway.

I just saw a (pro-Ukranian) report of Russian forces storming Terrikon, which is a fortified spoil tip near Avdiivka. Russians were rushing to what is literally a giant wall with hundreds of troops. According to the report, only one Russian was able to climb it, but he fell to his death in the end.

I never expected a Russian Game of Thrones reenactment, but here we are.

Reporting from Ukraine is pretty even handed for a pro-Ukraine source and has sources on his Telegram.

Denys Davdov in his latest showed the Oryx loss data for the last week and it's only backing the sheer scale of Russian losses. RU confirmed losses 173 vs Ukraine 37- thats just what has been confirmed, the real losses are a fair whack higher

Meanwhile Yamamoto is going THIS IS IT, THE DECISIVE BATTLE TO WIN THE WAR and Manstein is mumbling something about cauldrons.

The belief that One Big Push is what is needed to win and the losses inflicted are worth it remains strong.

Now with less breakage.

PiS are not entirely unlike what you'd get if the evangelical wing of the GOP had a majority alone. They've been meddling with the supreme court to stop them from interfering, have encouraged regions to declare themselves "LGBT-free", tried to completely ban abortions but only got close, tried to ban in-vitro fertilisation for some reason, have turned national media into pro-party propaganda and severely weakened protections for the independent press, they compare not accepting muslim immigrants to historical battles in Polish history - you get the idea. And of course, they're sceptical of the EU because it sets some limits on how far they can go.

Basically, it's "the catholic church of Poland as a party" in the worst possible way, and if they win again they'll continue shaping the political system to their taste.

Which is perhaps not super relevant to Ukraine, but they're utter shitheads and I really hope they lose.

Or is it some shmuck in command who has to present some progress or dig his own hole?

We have slowed down the Ukrainian offensive enough to have amassed enough forces to launch a counterattack. One of the biggest advantages of launching an attack is that we get to choose the time and place of it, meaning that we can pick the most vulnerable part of the line to attack. Knowing all that, we are going to throw our entire reserves at...the one giant heavily fortified hill in the entire region that can fire on anything approaching it.

Brilliant.

It's actually extremely relevant to Ukraine long term. The EU needs structural reforms before it can accept new members, and Poland/Hungary have been using their veto to make that impossible.

Seems the order is take Donetsk Oblast any way possible. And speculation is even if the Russian election is rigged for Putin, he still wants *anything* to say the war is getting success.

Andso you get this latest offensive having more losses in a few day than at any other time in the last 600 days

I think it's the undisputable fact that Russia is bigger than Ukraine and they think this will mean they will eventually win.
Ukraine plus its allies are also undisputably bigger then Russia but are not committed fully like Russia is and over time, elections will chip away at that support.

Maybe Putin also believes the wars against Japan in 1904, Poland in the 1920's and Finland in 1939 could have been far more decisive victories if continued. And he will not accept anything less then everything.

And unfortunately I think this strategy of trickling in support slowly completely plays into that. If there were 1000 new tanks on a ship right now maybe they'd get the message that then need to gtfo while they can. Really frustrating.

Any news on the F-16s? I haven't heard anything in months.

Current word is that F-16s and what's needed to support them will be online by March-April of next year. It might be sooner rather than later with some luck though.

The charge of the light brigade happened because the two involved commanders were brothers-in-law or some such relation who were not on speaking terms due to petty family bullshit, so when obviously flawed and ambiguous orders about attacking artillery positions were relayed between them, the guy in charge of cavalry decided to order a suicide assault on what he assumed was the objective while throwing his arms in the air and passively aggressively saying "ok, I'm sure you know what you are doing, who am I to question your brilliance" rather than ask for clarification.

The Russians have already found 100 ways to make that scenario look like a display of tactical genius in comparison.

It remains to be seen how much Slovak policies will change - Fico depends on a coalition government and HLAS is/was pro-European despite being socially conservative. Both parties have been suspended from The Party of European Socialists though, for joining a coalition with the far-right Slovak National Party - so I'm still very unsure on how the chips will fall
