Turns out this was a pointless endeavour and they don't want to do the extra work, which apparently requires them to manually do stuff rather than just maintain, so they're removing it.

There was talk in some of the behind-the-scenes talks Admins give mods of high-population subs that they were thinking of turning karma into a cryptocoin. I think it was just one guy on the team who was super into them and trying to force it (IIRC there's still like, Reddit avatar NFTs or something in the code)

The casino is just announcing that your casino tokens can no longer can be converted to US currency because they dont have enough. So you’re gonna have to take those casino chips to another casino. I’m sure they’ll have enough money though.

Boxturret posted:when will people learn to be their own bank? that's the whole point of bitcoin. they just keep throwing their bitcoin in to any random guy with a websites' hands and then act all shocked when he takes it all Somewhere along the line people saw the value of Bitcoin going up and decided that it isn't actually a currency but instead a stock, and started treating it as such. Treating everything involved with a blockchain as a stock has certainly hurt the space, that's pretty much all NFTs were/are. Everything is expected to be some sort of get rich quick scheme and so many people have lost track of the point being that it's simply a different, and in many ways better, form of money.

It's also similar to sovereign citizen, snake oil and qanon brainworms where out of sheer contrarianism, the more obviously untrustworthy a source is the more they believe them. Especially when said source validates their desires.
