It's called the 'Mazda Roadster' in Japan still. They've fairly recently dropped the other Japanese model names though (Demio, Axela, Atenza)

Iirc, when they dropped the protege name to go with just 3, it was said to be something to do with the Mazda name not being as recognized as the names of the cars themselves. Or something like that

It always annoyed me when car companies would drop evocative nameplates like Miata and Viper in favor of anonymous strings of letter-number codes. MX-5. SRT-10. YAWN-4 I guess I don't really care as much anymore, maybe because I recognize that the well of good car names is not infinitely deep and you end up with companies coming up with names like "Millenia"

TBH I think they changed from Miata to MX-5 because it sounds more masculine. Lots of weird stereotyping about Miata drivers in the US.

The only reason people hate on Miata drivers is they're compensating for having a micropenis. They're a loving blast to drive. Sure absolutely not the fastest car out there stock but the ND is actually pretty rapid for what it is, and it is probably one of the nimblest cars I've ever driven.

I remember when the Land Rover Discovery 3 was branded just as the 'LR3' in North America, LR's press release at the time stated that it was because the US market preferred alphanumeric model names. At the time I thought that sounded screwy, since loads of cars (especially Japanese ones) that had alphanumeric names in the UK and/or Europe had 'proper' names in the USA. But perhaps that applied to the 4x4/SUV market rather the small accessible two-seat roadster market. In reality it was far more likely to be because of the dogshit reliability reputation the Discos 1 and 2 had earned themselves on the American market.

The thing that blows my mind about the Miata is that you'd think/assume it's gotten bigger and bigger over the years just like the Mini and the Fiat 500 and the Civic and everything else that started out tiny and then with every iteration they listened to the market research that said "it's great, I just wish there was a little more legroom" But I went and looked up the dimensions of every Miata generation and they're within millimeters of each other, going back all the way to 1989. The current one is like three inches wider than the first-gen one but it's actually a tiny bit shorter overall

I can barely drive an NA, can drive an NB with a little discomfort, NC is still too small but better than the NB. ND went back the other way. The RF would decapitate me with the retractable hardtop. All or them I’m basically staring at the bar across the top of the windshield, and probably couldn’t put the top up. At least, not without installing a Kirkey seat and/or floor drop.

That was posted in TFR a day or so ago and most of them agree that it was a hammer doing that and not any actual bullets. They should post close ups. Then we can tell if it was for sure as there would be lead residue in the depressions. Note how they didn't seem to shoot the windows. This is what it looks like when metal stops bullets Note that the holes are uneven, and there is lead smeared everywhere. That Tesla looks like someone took a ball peen hammer to it. Every dent is uniform and looks like they came from the same direction with no bullet bits to be seen anywhere. Edit: this gif shows the lead spashing away and the base of the bullet sticking to the surface metal. stealie72 fucked around with this message at 23:46 on Oct 22, 2023 |

That's what happens when you hire 20 year old engineers in california who have never shot a gun before to test how "bullet proof" your car is. Because setting up a private gun range in los angeles is no small feat. You take the energy imparted on a surface using a 5.95mm bullet, then using the pneumatic cannon you have on hand, figure out what size stainless steel ball bearing and at what velocity you need to fire it at to "simulate" a gun shot. Gives you a highly repeatable test with no permits needed, but.. also you could have just driven it to Nevada and done it that way.

Maybe it was shot with a BB gun. Actually, most of the BBs that use in mine seem to be copper coated or plated. So there would be little bits of copper.
