BUT MY LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS ON THE FORUMS!

hobbesmaster posted:

The problem is that reaction videos literally take money out of the pocket of the original streamer. It’s certainly not 1:1 viewer count but there absolutely are people not watching the original video because they saw it on xQc’s channel.

Oh I completely agree. But I also think that there’s a big difference between “react channels” and channels where a subject-matter expert or career commentator breaks down or performs some kind of critique or analysis of the video in question, etc.

I’m just saying that the pivot from everybody being mad at XQC to everybody forgetting about XQC and being mad at SSSniperwolf, a much much smaller creator, feels like there’s a bias or motivating stuff below the surface that has caused this to become a much more successful and sustained campaign than the one against XQC. And obviously now the doxxing means that the campaigners have had the fire of righteousness lit in their bellies, even tho big streamers doxx their critics like this all the time and get away with it.

that’s because XQC *just* left twitch for kick

and he gets uploaded to YouTube and primarily watches YouTube content, but he’s not “on” YouTube in a meaningful way

In terms of reach/effect and certainly in terms of earnings he’s way bigger than SSSniperwolf

He has 551K followers on Kick and 11.9M on Twitch. I didn't mention him being on YouTube.

Is this a "if they're so famous, how come I haven't heard of them" line of argument? SSSniperwolf is in the top 250 channels on YouTube. If that's not reach I don't know what is.

That's because the original controversy was about her making money off of reaction videos of other peoples' content, posted on YouTube to her YouTube followers. That's the relevant audience and it is much larger than xQc's on any platform.

Might I suggest the channel Reaction Time. No idea if they're even relevant anymore but between poorly done jokes and dumb catch phrases the main guy would often just stare blankly at the videos or just comment on exactly what was happening.

This is literally the twitch react meta. Streamer reacts, other streamer reacts to their reaction, original streamer re-reacts, third party reacts, etc.

What gets you into the top 250 follower wise? It loving blew my mind that sssniperwolf had 30m followers given that the "content" is vacuous garbage. Like I know Linus is whatever at this point but 10m subs for actually trying to make original content seems like very hard work compared to free booting content.

I am not being snarky by this, but I'm always insanely curious as to how this wedged itself in how youtube operates, but why does anyone care about recommended videos or their algorithm? When did it just become accepted that you have the computer toss videos your way?

Full disclosure, I use ublock to just nuke that entire side strip of recommended videos, I don't see the grid of videos when the video I just watched ends, and I also can't see Shorts since I have those blanked as well. I have the channels I follow, browse directly from my subscriptions page. I watch the video, it ends on black. I also have youtube red or premium or whatever the hell they call it now because I had Google Music and now it's youtube music or red or tunage or whatever the gently caress, so I am not ~stealing~ views. I also don't really care that Google knows me or tracks me, I'd rather they didn't but whatever that's long ago gone. I just don't want to see any ads.

It's just strange to me that people are protective of their video recommendations when you don't need them at all, watch something else, do something else, play a game, whatever. It's just ad recommendations, but with youtube videos. It's one of those things that makes me feel like I'm the crazy one since everyone else is talking about something I don't understand.

Yeah, my feed is usually pretty much entirely the stuff that I'm interested in. I spent enough time curating it and slamming the "don't you loving dare" button on chuds and poo poo that I just see videos I'd want to click on.

IDK, maybe it's because I pay for YouTube Premium for the music app and so my recommendations feed actually works like it should, but that's bordering on :tinfoil:.

I don't mind YouTube recommendations because I've found a decent amount of smaller creators that way, and it doesn't take much effort to just tell it to not recommend people who are poo poo

My youtube is not offering me any of that stuff. Just videos similar to channels Im subscribed to and topics I'm watching.

How are you guys using youtube? I have a bookmark pointing to my subscriptions and a bookmark pointing to my youtube history on my bookmarks bar:

I only click those. I rarely go to the home tab. I have around 130 subscriptions. It's incredibly rare for youtube to offer anything not related to the stuff I like to watch.

When I'm not logged, in it's the worst poo poo I've ever seen.

You are the .00001% of youtubes userbase. Most people go to the frontpage, and click poo poo. They've been aggressively deprioritizing the subscriptions page for years. You also need to remember tons of people use YouTube through apps that don't have any (all/most/some depending on device) of those options available, like TVs and Smart Phones.

It's basically the same reason people just flip through TV channels sometimes. None of your subscriptions are currently offering you a new thing that's compelling you at the moment, so you look through the algorithmic recommendations to see if anything catches your eye.

I think they just got totally and immediately blown out of the water by all of the aforementioned sites rapidly developing and developing their various cultures and having exponentially more money and resources.
