I wish this game was just slightly shittier like Outer Worlds. I did the newbie planet for that game, got my spaceship, made it to the 2nd planet, and said “ah this is gonna be a slightly lovely remake of Fallout 4 in space. I can safely skip the rest of it.”

And I did.

I beat all of Starfield and even enjoyed parts of it. It has a lot of well done stuff, and it is greater than the sum of its parts (a lot of parts are individually very weak). But the missed opportunities and the boring parts and the bad writing and the baffling design decisions are so frustrating.

Starfield is definitely worse that Outer Worlds. Your personal failure to abandon ship sooner doesn't reflect on the games.

still having a blast in this game.

I found out that I can recruit Amelia Earhart's clone as a crew member so I'll probably give that a try today.

Most of the guns are fun to shoot and feel responsive - the binary/hair triggers, the minigun, the grenade launcher, the old Earth weapons, the shotguns. Slug shotguns are very fun.

The quest line they stole from Titanfall 2 where you warp between timelines was good albeit plagiarized.

The shipbuilder makes cool looking ships (although the interiors are horrifying).

The pirate mission where you find space treasure on a ghost ship and then kill the fascist Navy was well done.

The zero G space casino ship shootout was well done. Not even a quest here and one of the very few opportunities for large scale zero G combat in the entire game lol.

The vistas on some of the worlds are very cool, particularly with a giant moon or ringed gas giant above. Finding the psychedelic mushroom forest on a planet was cool, despite the complete lack of game mechanics attached to it.

The spaceship sound design is well done and the take off rockets have an awesome crackle.

Some of the trippy 2001 space odyssey visual effects are cool. Touring NASA in the god forsaken ruins of Florida was cool.

I can’t believe it took me 80 hours to put together that anemic list.

One of the final plot missions kept crashing to desktop so I uninstalled the game and watched the ending on youtube.

I don't particularly regret playing this on gamepass but I'd definitely feel ripped off if I had paid the bonkers full retail price.

i remember that, it’s actually a rare example of a character saying something interesting and unexpected

the game really needed more details like pants making GBS threads, etc. to fill out the setting

If you really must play a Bethesda game that rips off Mass Effect, download Enderal, which is free, but also actually competently made and good.

Yes. Elden Ring has way more interesting ideas about space than Bethesda's writers could ever dream of.

Elden Ring takes place in a massive and beautiful world without anything procedurally generated and was developed in like a third of the time it took Bethesda to make Starfail’d.

Elden ring rules. The verticality and sense of wonder and exploration as you navigate the levels is unmatched.

Every location is lovingly handcrafted and none of them are lovely copy pastes. The world is insanely dangerous and hostile. It was my first Souls game so the first time I actually managed to kill a Crucible knight I felt like the greatest gamer in the world.

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but I really hated the 'ending' of starfield (amongst other things about it I hated) for doing the thing that everyone hates when games do it - taking all your stuff away that you spent the whole game building up. I even carried on playing as starborn and speedran collecting artifacts again because I thought maybe you'd gain some ability to choose universe and could just go back to your old life but as a starborn, but no, it's just the exact same thing again except more annoying.

It's fundamentally broken as a concept, the story is about unlocking access to explore an infinite number of universes, but every one is identical! They either designed it so you're meant to throw everything away and start again after how many hours for the benefit of ???, or you're meant to go back to an earlier save and just ignore the main story quest?

Also, i never once found any adhesive, so I couldn't craft most weapon/suit upgrades. Did i miss something? Was it a bug that meant it never spawned any?

I think all you get for the first newgame+ is access to bigger ships. After 5x NG+ you have a chance of getting alternate versions of the constellation HQ: https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/946148-starfield-new-game-plus-differences-list-ng-variations-changes-lodge-cutscenes-alternate-start

Which is neat, but it also highlights how inconsequential the other constellation members are to the overall plot.

IIRC adhesive is harvested from plants and animals. I gave up on crafting pretty early tbh, even after installing a mod that made materials weightless. The Mantis armour was kinda OP and lasted the whole game, and random guns I found were better than anything I could craft.
