torgeaux posted:The colors on the sparrow photos are great. The fall palate around here is pretty classy, plus the lighting was extra mellow - light fog with a partial solar eclipse. torgeaux posted:The colors on the sparrow photos are great. Thanks! Literally from my front porch. There were cool sunset colors and a crescent moon maybe 45 degrees away but there wasn't any way to get that in frame short of breaking into my neighbor's house.

Hey bird nerds, my wife and I have gotten deeper into birding and I'm now toying with the idea of a cheap birding setup. I know M43 is a pretty popular choice for the crop factors and weight, but I'm extremely out of the digital market and ecosystem so I don't know what's good in the second hand market right now. It seems like the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II can be had for like $400 - $500, sometimes with lenses, sometimes without. Is this a good place to start? Are there any other M43 cameras around a similar price point I should be looking at that would be better for exclusively birding? My goal is something relatively compact with good reach. I'm not expecting full frame top of the line performance or whatever, just something I can carry alongside all of my film gear that I can whip out and snap a bird or two with.

The E-M10 Mark II should be fine, although it might be worth reading a few reviews to find out if the auto focus and subject tracking for wildlife on newer models are enough of a step up that it justifies the price increase... I haven't had much luck tracking birds in flight with C-AF on my E-M10 Mark III, but then, I'm a lousy bird/action photographer, so don't take that as gospel, I probably have half the settings wrong...

Yeah, they are beauties! Loving the Cormorant! Here are some recent views from the mudflats: Eastern Curlews Tern Noisy Miner And bonus video. These are bar-tailed Godwits. They fly very fast and very fly low making them hard to track at long distance. So enjoy some out of focus video for the first 10 or so seconds: https://vimeo.com/876564604

I was downtown taking pictures of buildings a little while back and saw this guy coming up the river just in time to snap a few shots. Was not prepared at all so I'm pretty happy that it came out as well as it did Didn't even notice the fish until I pulled up the photos and quietly shouted "gently caress yeah!" when I saw it

Based on your previous photos in this thread, I assume you're in Mediterranean Europe? If so, then I would say yes. It's not the right crown for a Jack Snipe, the white belly and 'short' bill is wrong for Great Snipe. It's completely wrong for woodcock.

Yeah it always helps to post location if an ID is wanted, but that is a Common Snipe, here's one I took the other day.
