Yeah man do you have an example of a time where it paid off for a domestic labor union to take a side on a controversial issue of international politics?

Edit: like I'm sorry to say this guys but unions died. They were dead for like 35 to 40 years. They're somehow making a comeback right now and maybe we don't need to be following the dead failed union playbook this time around

The dead failed playbook is becoming the 'we're not a cause we're just salary/disciplinary negotiators on retainer' union, though.

"Honest" *question" news - Everyone has been talking about Israel shutting off water/electricity to Gaza, but why is it Gaza is dependent on Israel for those things in the first place? Why has Hamas from 2006 to 2023 not built their own electric plants or water purification plants? Are they just too small to run those things, or has Israel had a formal policy to stop or destroy any efforts by Hamas to build such buildings and make themselves more independent?

I know Israel has a blockade against Gaza that Egypt assists with, and controls what goes in and out of Gaza, so have they made sure Gaza can't buy anything that can help them build these plants and not be dependent on an enemy state?

This article (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/17/crisis-gaza-why-food-water-power-running-out) by the Guardian goes into the ramifications of electricity and water being turned off by Israel, and mentions there is (one) power plant, and families have personal desalination plants for water drinking, but unless Israel has been actively sabotaging efforts to become independent from them, it seems bonkers that Hamas has not tried to build up that infrastructure.

i'm still researching exactly what the infrastructure situation is over there, but long story short is: they tried.

gaza has, for instance, been improving its desalination infrastructure to be more proportional to the size of the population, since seawater intrusion is slowly but surely poisoning well water. commercial scale desalination requires a whole bunch of electricity, which is a more complicated problem. gaza has no real natural resources, so the main source of domestic power is the Gaza Power Plant, which is a 140MW unit that runs on imported (often smuggled) fuel oil. that's something like a third of the actual electricity demand for the whole strip. (for a while this plant ran exclusively on oil smuggled in barrels through tunnels from egypt - which must have been a hell of a bucket brigade operation)

even if you could somehow get the parts and build another power plant you'd only be more reliant on unreliable imports or smuggling. the only realistic domestic option is solar - and you need a bunch of land for that, which the strip does not have. so the long and short of it is, you can build all the nice infrastructure - and they've tried - and without consistent imports due to arbitrary israeli blockades, it'll just all sit idle until some IDF desk jockey gets bored and decides to bomb it. so in the mean time, imported energy and water is gonna be about as good as anything

https://oaklandside.org/2021/06/08/pro-palestine-ship-blockade-port-of-oakland-activist-history-israel-zim/

Dockworkers are a great example of a union that has an internationalist, class conscious orientation in the US. They are great on issues of imperialism.

They are also one of the few unions that told that US state and AFL-CIO to gently caress off in the 1950s when told to purge their Communists. Them and the UE are still very different from most of the US labor movement because of that history.

The ILWU and UE also focus first on really organizing, educating, and fighting for their members. "Nuts and bolts organizing" and "international solidarity" should not be in competition.

Having a solid base in those workplace struggles is needed for those bigger fights. If you can't have people turn out to a normal shop floor action, they won't turn out to the Palestine march. A union also needs to know at least a little about the international situation, or else you become like that SEIU local who just purged a guy for having the correct analysis of Palestine, which could easily turn into another purge of socialists/communists in general.

It's not remotely intact but it also wasn't a seven story building that got leveled like some people were saying for some reason. It's a whole complex of smaller buildings that got concussed and singed when bomb exploded over(?) the parking lot. Eyewitness testimony said the false ceiling in the ER fell out to give you an idea of how the buildings were affected
