Yeah, and I'd really like to see how that looked. The creators of The Boys have been pretty good at showing the dangers of toxic masculinity, race supremacy and capitalism.

But I suppose getting into toxic Christianity would just get their offices firebombed or shot up.

Ennis already covered that in the source material, in true Ennis fashion (all the religious supes other than Starlight are closet homosexuals and/or rapists)

:rip: party dude. You died as you lived: trying to party.

That was a fun episode. And the inclusion of "Soldier Boy" made it even better. I love that dickhead.

Brink and Shetty are loving monsters. But at the end of the episode somewhere Butcher just got a huge boner but he doesn't know why :v:

One of the great superhero exposition episodes, up there with the episode of watchmen the TV show where someone overdosed on a memory drug and they did a historical fantasia.

I haven't watched the newest episode yet but Jensen Ackles rules and if the entire Boys franchise pivoted to the Jensen Ackles show I would be 100% on board.

I could do with tamer, shorter sex scenes if it meant we could fit more story into the show.

Taking regular "gently caress breaks" just to appeal to the lowest common denominator (who can just go watch porn) is one of my biggest gripes with the show. Sure, they're young and their hormones are all over the place, I get it, gotta acknowledge that COLLEGE DRAMA trope...I just wish that now we're getting into the "so what the gently caress are we gonna do about all this" phase, that they'd be a little less concerned with getting off.

"Hey Sam, wanna have sex in this filthy drive-in concession stand that somehow hasn't been nerve-gassed and raided simply so we can check the 'and then they hosed' box for this episode?" "Yeah, Sure!"

I get them tbh. Structurally they're designed both to give Sam and Emma a nice bonding moment before that relationship inevitably comes crashing down (mark it), but they also exist to keep Sam isolated from the A plot. That way he can come in at the end and try and kill Cate and the other characters can jump in and defend her, to show how much they've changed and grown over the episode*.

And yeah, they probably have an expected quotient of sex / weird sex that they've got to live up to as part of genre promises inherent to doing The Boys as an extended universe / brand / whatever.

* This is a big part of why I think this episode was so poor. The bit where Marie says "We can't trust you now, and it's going to take a long time for us to forgive you" (or words to that effect) is just bananas. The episode's trying to suggest -- very schematically -- that they're all capable of poor acts themselves, and sure. But there's a world of difference between what any of them have done, even Marie, and what Cate regularly and with full awareness did for years as an adult. She was auditing for Dr Mengele. The idea that the leads can be friends with her one day is already a stretch, and the show dangling that idea so prominently already makes me think it doesn't really understand how terrible Cate's actions are.

I also find it weird that the show decided to focus on Andre's completely consensual relationship with Cate instead of his random hit and run on that woman in the club. The show might have had more of a point if it decided to emphasise that.

That is a very good point. It's also kind of surprising his father or someone else didn't bring that up when he was lamenting being surrounded by sham superheroes.

Jordan's (who also left that woman to bleed to death on the floor) secret shame was even flimsier. They, what? Protected Luke's privacy and didn't broadcast that he was on steroids and being treated for the side effects? What a monster.

They clearly kept Brink's(and Luke's) secret for their own personal gain.

I get that they were bribed, my point was that they didn't have reason to suspect the secret was anything more sinister than a medical treatment Luke consented to and its side effects.

Which sure, obviously made him dangerous, but I'm not sure one supe with occasional roid rage is any less stable than the rest of the campus.

Honestly, the best part about that sex scene is that Sam recognized he wasn't well, shared that openly, and that he might inadvertently hurt Emma. That's more foresight than pretty much the entire male population has before just getting randomly laid, let alone losing their virginity.

I do enjoy that the student body seems to know they can just gently caress off for years, never go to class, and just so long as they don't draw undue attention to themselves or Vought/Godolkin, they can just languish there for the better part of a decade.

(even though I remember hearing the tuition is ~$70k/year, so I'm guessing it's not so much "free" as "Vought owns you through your debt for eternity")

It's a bit strange that Cate's mental image of Soldier Boy incorporates his actual godawful personality rather than what I assume is a squeaky-clean public persona, but it was fun to see him back.

I assume the dives into everyone's memories weren't about the most egregious thing they've done but what they feel most guilty about in retrospect. For Andre it's stabbing his best friend in the back, for Jordan it was deciding not to do any follow-up on an obviously hosed situation, and for Marie it was the exact emotion she was feeling when her power manifested.

Nah! A little chocolate will do

is Gen V running concurrent to The Boys? How long has Soldier Boy been thawed out by this point? Maybe she picked some stuff up from other people about his actual personality and that change made it into her subconscious. Or she dirtied him up when she started masturbating and it just so happened to be in line with the real Soldier Boy

He seemed surprised and confused when they parroted Vought's public spin on him (Russian asset) and his actual awfulness seems only known to a handful of people.

So I think Cate really did just get off on imagining The American Hero as a foul-mouthed douchebag.
