Considering it's already overheated to the point of having an Annihilator's movement profile, and it's in range of a Hunchback, I don't think our friend is long for this world.

The Mongoose might actually be our ace in the hole for dealing with that Battlemaster in way that will leave the cockpit intact. It's nimble enough that it should be able to consistently get into the big boy's rear arc without much difficulty, and punch holes in its rear armor. With the +2 cooling from environmental effects it can run and alpha every turn without overheating.

You could quite literally run circles around the thing and potentially even kick at its legs without it ever being able to retaliate (I think, I don't remember if torso twisting+arm firing arcs also affect melee. Getting backhanded by an 85-tonner would not be ideal.)

Rear shots are cool but even if you do get behind it less than half (17/36) hit location results are actually rear torsos. Never rely on hitting the torsos from the back.

It's not perfect, sure, but my main point is that the Mongoose can fairly reliably deal 20-ish damage per turn to the Battlemaster with complete impunity so long as it keeps its move mod up and uses terrain wisely. An 8/12 movement profile gives you a ton of wiggle room.

Would be better if we had more critseekers, but that's the hand we've been dealt.

torso twist does affect the firing arc for physical attacks (when applicable) and punches can hit the side arcs (with one arm) so it would be a very spicy move

Thats part of why I was hoping you'd go dunk on the southmost talos! you're pretty fast so as long as you like, go down southward a bit every turn, you should get the chance to swap dance partners.

That doesn't seem too bad tho, since the ppc's are arm mounted, right? so its a choice between firing and punching. But those are ER ppc's, which have no min range, so ...

Which is worse, the punch or the shot? My gut says its probably being shot.

Battlemasters are are 85 tons. Punch damage is tonnage divided by 10, rounded up. So it'd be 9 damage vs the PPC's 10. But one consideration is that the punch table excludes the legs if both mechs are on level terrain, meaning a higher chance to get punched in the face.

Now that I've thought about it that being a Royal model makes getting behind it a dangerous prospect no matter what. If it was the base model then the single PPC would have a blind spot on its left flank, but that thing can always get an angle on you.

A Talos vanished in a ball of fire that left only scattered limbs and twisted metal in its wake. Unable to contain the force of the blast, the Talos’s bulbous torso had split and practically peeled itself like a ripe naranji. A column of black smoke rose perhaps a few dozen meters before Frigid’s cruel winds dispersed it.

“Holy poo poo, Lieutenant, are you alright?” Rampart couldn’t keep concern from her voice. The Mongoose had been only about ten meters from the blast and had been momentarily enveloped in smoke and flame.

“Just fine,” Prodigal replied even before her ‘Mech’s wintery camo became visible once more. “You did say they were full of ammo. I almost feel bad—that Talos went up faster than a forest on a planet with too much oxygen.”

“Thinly armored and vulnerable from the rear,” Grandpa threw in his two cents. “That’s usable combat data. At least, it’s something we can pass along to scout regiments and Aerojocks.”

“Aha, that should see the bugger off!” The Colonel’s voice cut through their comms chatter. “Teach a measly little medium to interfere in a duel between Assault ‘Mechs!”

“Colonely, wait! Don’t turn your back on—” Ironhead began. “—poo poo. Lieutenant, I don’t think he’s actually listening to us.”

I think we should try and finish off the light in front of us first before going down south. If we leave him running around it's going to be a pain in the butt forever. You can get to 2309 by walking and blasting away, with decent shots.

I guess I'm just gonna do as suggested and backstab the Light Mech from 2309. I tried to see if I could backstab the other Talos but I think I'm a bit too far away. Ideally another spread shot of lasers will leave this guy on death's door. If either of you want to join in to confirm the kill that would be appreciated, but I doubt it can survive a volley from more than one of us at a time.

Rampart winced as a shell from the surviving Talos’s heavy autocannon glanced away from the BlackJack’s left side. The shell looked like it had been safely deflected; but she didn’t like the sound it made or the way her Blackjack’s structure rang with the impact. Her diagnostics computer didn’t show a breach but she couldn’t help but worry that something hat been shaken loose.

She twisted in place, first right, then left—and was relieved that everything seemed to respond correctly even as she dropped her crosshairs over the Talos to return fire. She scoured it with return fire from her medium lasers, stripping armor from its sides an arms and sending stray droplets of molten ceramic-metal composites raining onto the hard-packed snow. The Talos weathered her fire the way she’d endured a direct hit from its autocannon. The enemy Mechwarrior kept upright, the Talos’s unusually stiff legs and oversized feet helping to keep it upright.

It swiveled in place as its pilot weighed their options—then backed into the comparative safety of a copse of snow-covered evergreens. Rampart imagined she could feel their uncertainty; and couldn’t help but agree with it.

“Yeah, I hear you buddy,” she mumbled to herself. “I dunno if either of us can take another salvo like that.”

My initial game plan was to try and get behind the Falcon again so I could finish it off, but I don't know that I can do that. The furthest that I can run is 1507 facing 1407 and then torso twist to face the enemy, which I'm not sure if that counts as a back attack or not. Alternatively, run to 1607 and turn to face the enemy. I can shoot it, and also kick on the punch table. It won't be perfect since it's got decent evasion but if I hit I think I'll either knock it over or break something.

What does automatic upper mean in the context of crits?
Normally most 'Mech sections have 12 slots, and to determine crits you roll once to choose the upper or lower 6 slots, then roll another d6 to see what was crit. If a slot is empty, you roll again until something is hit.

Automatic upper just means that the lower 6 slots are empty, so there's no need for that first upper/lower selector roll.

This is an educated guess because I don't know offhand, but locations in the papermodel chart are typically 6 or 12 locations to correspond to 'actually being able to be hit'. so you coinflip for 'upper or lower hit chart', but if there's nothing there, it just goes to the only possible location.
IE, you only have 1-6 slots of crittables.

Also, woof. now to figure out where to go. I could use some advice - I have an inling, but its high risk/reward
