Forbidden Zone

You'd expect Oingo Boingo to make a good movie like other pedophiles capable of kino like Luc Besson, Polanski or Allen but turns out they are pedophiles AND made a lovely movie.

i wanted to hold off from reviewing my own pick, forbidden zone, until everyone else had their say

to me this movie is amazing, even going into it without knowing its production and backstory or even who oingo boingo was you can tell right away this movie is cheap

the sets look like somebody threw trash bags over dividers in the sixth dimension, the costumes look like they came out of the bottom of a vaudeville's trunk, they couldnt even afford color for their film in the 1980s

but even with all that, what shines through is the pure imagination and creativity that went into attempting to make a mess into a theatrical production. the actors give this film their all, giving serious performances in the midst of one of the most chaotic and overtly offensive scripts ever written.

its a cacophony of sound, offensive imagery, and throwbacks to things even in the 80s hardly anybody was going to remember least of all look fondly on. this film was not designed for mass appeal

but they went for it, for all its in your face bawdiness, and thats another thing too. the movie never attempts to be clever. it doesnt hide behind symbolism or innuendo, if the movie wants to show something, it shows it. i appreciate the sheer bravado of the filmmakers in this regard. while i couldve thrown a dart at a board of criterion picks and chosen a movie full of suggestion, subtly, i picked something that minced no words and gave it to you straight.

in a way, perhaps this was one of the most challenging picks of the club, which is saying something coming off of things like The Master and Hana-Bi. this movie deeply confrontational and in your face and leads to almost no room for something between love and hate. you either appreciate it for what it is, or reject it for those selfsame reasons. this makes it hard to critique rationally, and what makes it so good for a movie club pick in my opinion

if theres one thing i hope people did, is that they went into this film earnestly and attempted to think critically about what they saw. to me, it doesnt matter if somebody feels negative criticism is rude, i want to hear it. i love seeing people type their thoughts and feelings about what they saw, with specific examples and as much detail as they can muster

after all isnt that the point of a movie club?

anyway

my favorite scenes are the alphabet song, the line thats said right after somebody got shot during a poker game, the minnie the moocher homage, the animated sequences especially during the factory the father worked at and the introduction to the minnie the moocher homage, i love the ending... i love a lot about this movie, its so good the entire way through. the music is great, the performances are evocative, the effects while mostly crude are artfully used, and theres a lot to lol at all throughout. again, what makes this movie so difficult is that its so unconventional, its purposefully screwy and oddball and if you cant handle that its hard to appreciate the rest because its so upfront about what it is

10/10

I love Forbidden Zone but it's definitely a polarizing movie. The fact that Danny Elfman reused the theme song for the Dilbert theme still makes me chuckle.

It's always nice seeing Herve, the Kipper Kids or Susan Tyrell show up in movies.

really great movie. fosters a great sense of paranoia and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. everyone on the police force is an idiot in a hell of their own making. 4.5/5

Been saying this

November (2017)

demon tools whose purpose is to do menial tasks
the dead coming back to eat and turn into chickens
sacramental bread being used as bullets
meeting the devil at the crossroads and fooling him with currants
woman that turns into a dog and its never ever relevant to the story. it just happens for no reason
baroness that has been cursed to sleepwalk when theres a full moon out
shapeshifting plague
then at the end a guy sells his soul for nothing but pretty poetry, and the girl that loved him kills herself so that she can meet him in the hell that is the devils cauldron (at least i think thats what its supposed to be)
PURE. EASTERN. EUROPEAN. SOUL.

gorgeous rear end movie
they tried doing a bit too much. even at a full 2 hours, some stuff felt underbaked. i wish this was a full series. thatd be epic

loved it tho. only an eastern european could make a movie like this

4/5

oh no, this movies fandom has been taken over by the elevated horror freaks

empath genius movie watcher (pussy): jumpscares are cheap. you want something truly horrifying, you watch November (2017) by Rainer Sarnet. the atmosphere is truly unsettling and nerve-wrecking

empath genius movie watcher (pussy) [while watching the movie]: *casually throwing popcorn upwards and catching it with mouth* hahaha, stop it. im so scared right now.

memories of murder

writing this down for later:

that dropkick was excellent

post watching the movie:

all the dropkicks were excellent

i liked the movie a lot, it balanced humor and seriousness very well

the acting was really good too, when things got serious the actors would get wild eyed and really into the roles was cool to see

the city cop coming to the rural town and the rural cops getting their feathers ruffled is a tale as old as time but i like how beyond any social differences there were different approaches to methodology too

and i sort of relate to the main rural detective because his ability to discern the guilty by instinct is what i went on too and i think i was right

im pretty sure it was the retarded kids father doing it, he spoke about how he was burnt when trying to tell the detectives about the murderer, i dont think the main suspect had any relation to the retarded kid though.

the kids father does a lot of cooking at that bar/restaurant so itd be the perfect setting for the kid to get burnt

it would make sense to be a parent being overprotective of their kid. maybe his own guilt over it causes him to lash out violently at women who reject his son for that reason

itd also make sense why the killer prioritized the school girl over the slightly older lady at the end

im not sure everything fits into place but enough does that id book the dad and dropkick him

but yeah fun mystery, still makes you think about it even after the movie has ended, would be a good one to rewatch and test theories

ill give it 9/10

Memories of Murder

i was pretty hungry while watching this but couldnt force myself to pause it to get food, the highest rating possible

what a bummer (in the good way)
the stench of failure overhanging the plot is fascinating. we move from the press taking celebratory pictures to protesters outside the station to even children saying everyone knows the cops just beat confessions out of people. our main characters fall apart, and only accomplished in making the lives worse of those around them
