yeah the willy's mb is famous for not having a suspension of any sort and falling apart immediately because of hand tightened bolts

not sure how fudged the assembly competition jeeps are. probably not too much beyond having all the fiddly axle/transmission/etc assemblies already put together. willys and similar designs were great and as an added bonuses probably killed more general officers than any other machine

So there is not an ABCT that is stationed inside Germany with families, houses, etc, but there is always an ABCT (minimum 1) deployed to Europe on a deployment work schedule, without their families. My little brother has a ww2 jeep. It was a platform of it's time. Lots of people came into the war with farm experience, and the jeep was popular because all work on it can be done with minimal tools, and it really isn't much different from getting an old tractor to run. You can even crank start it like a model T.

There were aftermarket PTO kits, so it could literally be your tractor for a bunch of jobs.

40th Anniversary of the Beirut Marine Corps Barracks Bombing - United States Department of State

www.state.gov posted:

On October 23, 1983, Hizballah killed 241 U.S. military personnel, including 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers in a terrorist bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.  Minutes later, a second suicide bomber killed 58 French paratroopers.  Six innocent Lebanese civilians also lost their lives.  The abhorrent and shocking attack on the Beirut barracks remains to this day the single deadliest day for the U.S. Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Today, forty years later, we mourn those service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon lost in both attacks and we honor their legacy.  We think of their families and friends, who continue to feel the painful absence of loved ones.
As we reflect on this day, and in light of the ongoing challenges in Lebanon and the region, we remain committed to building a brighter future for Lebanon, the Lebanese people, and the broader Middle East.

Could be, but I think what we're definitely going to see is how putting a carrier or several next to a place doesn't settle the matter, and that's been an implicit assumption of US foreign policy for years now.

If a carrier does get attacked it'll be a barely submerged fpv marine drone loaded with enough explosives to say hello. Probably at 4am.

Hope they're on watches for that.

The Houthis and Hezbollah both operate at least the Noor/C-802 anti-ship missile, which is not the latest and greatest military technology but that's a pretty competent missile. Hezbollah might also have an export version of the P-800 Oniks.

Yea but digital combat simulator the game shows a carrier group is invulnerable to missiles unless swarmed by hundreds so engines to full, best speed, get the cabin boy to make a fresh pot of tea and tally-ho.

Yeah, in theory it takes quite a few missiles to saturate an AEGIS-defended surface group, which is why it's a good thing the guys with the anti-ship missiles don't also have hundreds of much cheaper drone bombs to do exactly that job for them

That's okay we'll have hundreds of sailors in flak armour and toting long arms lining the escorts, each shot fired eliminating a flying lawnmower.

Just forget any lessons potentially learned from Ukraine because you are a DC planner swaddled in an information bubble of your own making and it'll all make sense.
