If anything is airfield specific, note that (such as at airfield X, watch out for extra right parking , etc.)

Admiral Ileana Maria Sampaio
South American Combined Armada

Buenos día, señoras y señores,

The invasion continues, and operational successes have been mixed. While the unfortunate sinking of the Tikuna and the ground force retreats in the Punta Arenas region (AO Bolt) have been greatly concerning for all, the small victories near Isla de Carlos and Tierra del Fuego, as well as news of reinforcements marshaling to the north, have been heartening indeed. Supply issues are beginning to tighten belts in the west, but it is believed that PLA forces are also beginning to feel the sting of continued logistical targeting. Supreme Commander Gen. Carlos has ordered the ground reinforcement of AO Bolt to stabilize that defense, while we turn our offensive attention to the Tierra del Fuego region (AO Arrow) in the hopes of throwing those PLA forces into disarray.

With those intentions in mind, these naval orders are to be carried out:

In the western AO, the CNS Aspirante Isaza is ordered to sail NW and REJOIN the Chilean fleet holding station in the Magellan Strait. The vicinity of Isla Carlos III has been cleared of PLAN forces, but the presence of a PLAN 054a frigate (W1) to our southeast blocks any further access to the Magellan for now. Due to concerns about that frigate gaining targeting information the Isaza, as well as PLAAF bombers operating in the Antarctic, the corvette should clear the area for now. If necessary, the ship can be made available to return to pick up the Chilean special forces team operating nearby at the Vasquez Glacier radar installation. Similarly, the CNS O'Higgins is advised to sail NW along the continental plate while continuing its supply INTERDICTION, in order to avoid PLAN anti-submarine warfare helicopters detected in the area.

Major targets nearby include the aforementioned frigate (W1) as well as a group of cargo ships off the coast of Punta Arenas (W2) that are in the process of delivering ground force reinforcements to support their offensive in the Bolt AO. I am ordering an AIR STRIKE on the frigate by A-4 Skyhawks from the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, and I request CAP reinforcement from the SCAD air commander in support of that strike as well as to protect the Vasquez Glacier Radar installation, specifically in the form of Pontiac 1 M2000C Mirage fighters. I also advise that the cargo ships at W2 be considered a priority target.

Furthermore, with supplies at Puerto Natales Airbase rapidly being exhausted despite resupply efforts, the Argentinean P3 Orions are ordered to be REBASED at the larger and more distant El Calafate Airbase, subject to air commander approval.

In the Eastern AO, events are rapidly evolving. The discovery of significant S-300 SAM systems (E2, E3) protecting most of the PLA forces on Tierra del Fuego, as well as intel indicating that rocket artillery and cruise missiles have been delivered and are being set up nearby, and the news that the 1st PLAN fleet (E4) is advancing on Rio Gallegos from the SE, are all concerning. Not to mention that there has been a sighting of a potential 4th PLAN fleet sailing towards us from St. Helena, this one with a Liaoning-class carrier flagship and presumably a wing of J-15 fighters. With this in mind, and in support of the planned offensive near AO Arrow, the Argentine fleet is ordered to sail closer to Rio Gallegos and its NASAMS battery, and to SUPPORT Punta Delgada with the fleet. The anti-air defenses of the fleet may be able to provide some degree of protection against the cruise missiles that have been damaging the port. And the ships will also be nearby if an evacuation of Tierra del Fuego is required. The ARA San Juan is to continue rejoining the Argentine fleet. The Brazilian P3 Orions are advised to maintain a constant vigilance for the nearby 1st PLAN fleet believed to be nearby, and to alert the fleet CAP regarding any reconnaissance contacts in order to limit the PLAN sensor range.

Finally, the PLAGF artillery (E1) on the northern coast of Tierra del Fuego remain a potent threat. Their presence threatens highway supply routes on Ruta 255, and could potentially threaten the Punta Delgado ferry route as well, I endorse Gen. Humberto's plan to target those forces with ASTRO rocket artillery as soon as possible.

While the situation appears dire, it should be remembered that the PLA are operating very far from their supply bases. If we are able to stabilize the ground force situation and prevent a collapse of the SCAD alliance, I am confident that our air forces will be able to starve their troops of necessary supplies and fatally weaken them. One day you will be remember this conflict as merely a long afternoon - filled with intensity, but ultimately familiar to us here in the polar south. Eventually our aurora australis will appear.

It's shaping up to be a stormy weekend for us all, let's see if we can't give the PLA a good drenching.

A most excellent idea Comandante.

Colonel Forsythe as USSOUTHCOM Liason I present the above letter to you in the hopes that the Comandante may achieve this ambitious plan. Please consider it as these sorts of modifications could make all the difference in the fight.

To the other Commanders and Flight Leads:

I am pleased to welcome my adjutant Colonel Tomas "Shan" Rivera to the command team.

Colonel Rivera will be assisting in the planning and execution of the air battle plans from this point forward. We have an open door policy and a good flow of communication between the two of us, so feel free to contact him if I am not available.

Flight Leads given the disastrous events of the 17th, together with Colonel Rivera we are TOTALLY overhauling the way mission plans are formulated and communicated onto you. From here on out please refer to the common command map available on the very hyper secure SharePoint (proudly supported by Microsoft) with regards to designations of Areas of Operation, air corridors and known locations of PLA forces (very important including anti-air capabilities) These areas will be referred to often in planning.

We are currently formulating formal battle plans and they will be posted within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Thank you people that will be all.

Air Tasking Order (18 FEB 10): ELINT Aerial Surveillance of Punta Arenas / Tierra del Fuego

Aircraft: 1 x Beechcraft RC-12 Guardrail
Mission Distance: 891 km / 481 nmi

Description: A recon flight is needed to surveil three (3) sites of interest in the Punta Arenas / Tierra del Fuego region.

Site 31 is a group of PLAGF brigades in Tierra del Fuego that are attacking our forces. ELINT records of the area will provide CSAD and the Argentine army with necessary information for confronting this mounting threat. Entry into restricted air space over the Straits of Magellan is not authorized. While the flight path is believed to be non dangerous, be aware that enemy fleet activity has been detected to the SE. Do not deviate south from the flight path.

Site 32 is a group of enemy artillery units in Tierra del Fuego that are attacking our supply routes along Ruta 255. ELINT records of the area will provide CSAD and the Argentine army with necessary information for confronting this mounting threat. Entry into restricted air space over the Straits of Magellan is not authorized. While the flight path is believed to be non dangerous, be aware that enemy ground forces may be advancing from the southwest. Do not deviate south or west from the flight path.

Site 33 is a battlefield consisting of PLAGF brigades attacking the Punta Arenas line. Previous surveillance could not determine type or disposition. Detailed reconnaissance is required to determine the nature of the threat. The flight path is behind friendly MEAD, but be aware that enemy aircraft have been reported in the area. Listen to the Guard channel and be prepared for an immediate divert north if advised.

After reviewing your request for Rivet Joint support, the RAF received authorization from MOD to assist you. You have a 19 hour timeslot reserved, starting 0300 zulu on the 18th. We require a preliminary target area focus to fly this mission. Escort will not be needed.

Thank you.

The Boeing RC-135 is a family of large reconnaissance aircraft built by Boeing and modified by a number of companies, including General Dynamics, Lockheed, LTV, E-Systems, and L3 Technologies, and used by the United States Air Force and Royal Air Force to support theater and national level intelligence consumers with near real-time on-scene collection, analysis and dissemination capabilities.

The Rivet Joint easily represents some of the most sophisticated airborne intelligence collection that is available in this theater.

Mobilization

The Argentinian I Brigade is to be loaded onto heavy haul trucks, as many as the military logistics can manage, with the rest supplemented with civilian heavy haul trailers meant for heavy construction equipment. Given the proximity to the capital and major population centers, enough commercial/industrial trucks should be able to be contracted and mobilized for a mass convoy to Rio Gallagos down Highway 3. Civilian policing authorities will enforce temporary shutdowns of the highway as the brigade convoy moves along. A train is to be loaded with fuel and sent to the Terminal at San Antonio Oeste, and will provide fuel for the convoy if they require it at that midpoint. They are to make best speed to Rio Gallagos, with about 22-26 hours of driving. The onloading, convoy management, etc. will add at least 2 days to the start, and offloading will take about a day on the other side. The brigade will deploy to HWY 255 once they're ready.

The remaining Reinforced Regiments of the Chilean 5th Division are to deploy to support their comrades on HWY 9. The light infantry will stick to the favourable terrain, and the mechanized and armor will cover the more wide open areas

Flight Leads!

We're trying to streamline the mission making process all the while making sure your intent is met when Waypoints are added. This workflow is a WIP, and will probably get revised but it should get easier...

1. Start on the Sign-Ups Tab. Make sure your plane type, tasking, flight name, and radio are all good. Flight Lead goes in the #1 Position.
2. Then go to the Package Briefing Tab and fill out your altitude, loadout, laser, and target tasking. (These are highlighted green right now)

3. Go to ATO.UGLY Tab and scroll over until you see the GREEN highlighted columns. Find your flight, and adjust the airfield then slide over and give us the 10 word tasking, and finally do the waypoints. Try to use the new point system from the TLAW Google Map. Save coords for special stuff like JDAM strikes or where absolute precision is needed. Or, leave a note for the Mission Designer that points out a DCS landmark they will know from intel or such.

If you see RED above a column it is auto-propagated from elsewhere. Or it should be.

4. Go to ATO.Clean Tab to see the index card view. Click the drop down and select your flight, you can also select other flights to compare waypoints. Note how I hosed up and left tasking as CAP and not Strike. This should help make sure everyone is on the same page between flights.

Note : You should still do a Flight Briefing for your team. That's where you include the great aerial recon, glide paths, fuel calculations, or whatever nerdery you'd like. This is to make sure the Mission Maker actually gets your waypoints right and doesn't have you landing at Burger King.

The Long Afternoon War - Mission 2 - Pontiac 2 AAR

Flight Members:
Pontiac 2-1 | Prime
Pontiac 2-2 | Lumme
Pontiac 2-3 | Gronank

Tasking: TARCAP
Kills: 1x J-7
Losses: Pontiac 2-1 | Prime, Pontiac 2-2 | Lumme
Expended: 4x Super 530D

Summary :words:

Engagement 1
We departed Rio Turbio for a TARCAP around Waypoint 1, flying alongside Pontiac 1 after a mostly incident free group take-off.

Before we hit our WP, each flight recieved a tasking; Pontiac 1 departed for their targets to the South West while we continued pushing South for our bandits. In flight, it was remarked that WP1 wasn't where we expected as we'd anticipated WP1 over water but nav was pointing back overland.

Regardless, with bandits hot we continued and I used the land as visual reference for roughly where we were supposed to be. Just as we entered the engagement range, our RWR called radar launch warnings, which I assumed was our bandits taking the first shot - but turned out to be a hostile naval vessel. Having hit rMax and with superior numbers (3vs2) I chose to stay aggressive and launched my fox 1 at the lead bandit before putting him to radar gimbal, releasing counter measures and watching for the incoming missile trail.

Having entered 10nm with RWR still blaring and unable to verify the success of my first missile I launched the second. Upon debrief, the first missile hit but didn't kill, and the second failed.

Inside 5nm, I got eyes on both bandits and began to maneuverer for fox 2 missile launches. I'd failed to update my wingmen that I was merged, and 2-3 took a shot on a bandit within close proximity - I was visual on the launch and as a precaution defended against it in case of a tracking issue, but was struck by a fox 2 from my bandits wingman.

2-2 and 2-3 pulled North, whereupon 2-2 was hit by an SA-11 at Punta Arenas; and 2-3 turned and dispatched a J-7 that was still pursuing.

2-3 went to form with Pontiac who was engaged 2vs1 after losing their wingman, but found that Pontiac 1-1 had handled the situation by when he arrived, and given remaining fuel/ord returned safely to base.

--

What went well?
  • Nice take off and formation flying on the way out.

What could have gone better?
  • Comms was messy; lots was comunicated interflight on Discord, our radio presets were widely spread and I failed to relay on own-flight radio channel which mission channel to set to. Actions to remove Discord from comms plan during flight, and re-request radio channel preset changes.
  • WP wasn't where we'd expected it, we only noticed when over water, ground crew are gonna catch a drubbing.
  • We pushed targets ahead of SEAD doing their thing on the SA-11; that's on me for prosecuting, but feel comms to strikers maybe could have been more joined up (belt & brances)
  • I didn't check my RWR properly, being it started squealing as we hit rMax I was confident it was our targets; had I taken the time to review I'd have seen it wasn't an airborne target and would have realised
  • I didn't know about Angry McBoat face; I assume I missed an intel drop ?
  • If I landed I'd probably have crashed anyway. Everything's awful.

Seeking one more for an F-5 mission. Two of the F-5 squadron said they're too shaken up after seeing past missions, and they put in transfers to other squadrons. The Flight Leader even left his office locked on the way out, but now that we've knocked the doorknob off his office, the Tigers of Uzi flight are back in business.

We've heard there are a bunch of airborne troopers complaining about stuff like "unsafe wind speeds" and "rain" and "wtf are we going to do against a mechanized battalion (reinforced)?" And it sounds to me like those guys might like to know that at least for a moment, they have the full power of the CSAD Air-Ground Taskforce backing them up as they look down the barrel of that rifle or as they slip away from autocannon fire.

Final planning to be completed, but I'd recommend a pilot with the ability to take off, tune some TACAN, read a mils depression chart, and they should have up to date Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape training and certification. Ability to land a plus. Ability to eject a must. I've never heard of a downed pilot, but I've heard of an extra paratrooper.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I am going to go ask the weaponeers if they're sure that the dud rate of our cluster bombs in muddy conditions approaches 25-35%...

COL Forsythe, USSOUTHCOM J3D

He read over the letter and was surprised that the request was so small, but also knew it was exactly the kind of request likely to be bogged down in red tape and parts availability for a while. But at least they were engaging in dialogue. He forwarded the letter to a massive distro of beancounters, legal advisors, political advisors, logisticians, foreign military sales representatives, the "building partner capacity" planning team, half a dozen other red tape aficionados, and the "PRC Invasion of South America" Crisis Action Team shift leaders.

Twenty-four minutes later, he sent a reply.

quote:

General,

That sounds like an excellent capability, and I am supportive of your forces having all the capabilities you require to be successful. However, Foreign Military Sales and Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreements are not my area of expertise. I forwarded your request to our J8 Resources and Analysis Directorate and legal office to see what they can do, and they will contact your staff to ensure the formal request documentation is processed.

Here is what I can do for you in the short term. Once the weather clears up, the command has been authorized to source collection with national assets in support of your operations. If you have specific Named Areas of Interest (NAIs) that you are seeking for collection after the weather clears up on 20 FEB 2010, let me know and I will pass to targets and J2. For now, I can provide some photographic reconnaissance.

Additionally, we have authorization as of an hour ago to ship pre-positioned non-lethal aid, including first aid kits, food, water sanitation, power generation, and some other basic life support capabilities. These were pre-positioned for hurricane, wildfire, and other disaster relief, so it's not exactly going to sustain an army, but it should help offset some of your immediate mobilization supply constraints, and our J8 is working the contracts to cost-share trucking contracts for these items.

As I am sure you can imagine with our commitments elsewhere overseas, the majority of our combat assets are out of position to support you immediately. However, if you and your fellow components or higher HQs have specific priority intelligence requirements or operational needs, generating a list would help me generate options for my commander in order to enable you all and your commanders and senior leadership. We want to assist with information that can help you identify and execute your decision points, branches, and sequels. By knowing what you and your supreme commander see as your highest priority intel requirements, we can help resource you internally without you having to pull assistance out of us piecemeal. It will also assist me in making the case to higher and our civil leadership, including Policy.

I or my boss will send this same information to your fellow component commanders and higher HQs.

He stood and prepared himself to go check in on the crisis action planners, who were probably in a furious mix of arguing over a map, confidently stating half-remembered poo poo learned six years ago, and building PowerPoint slides to the command format standards. On his way out the door, he snagged two items of critical importance: a green notebook and a whiteboard marker.

Combat Orders

AO ARROW[AKA Tierra Del Fuego]

As the supreme commander said, we're going on the offensive! Make it loud and clear in the newspaper, on the radio waves, and on social media. CSAD will *not* let the PLA advance one step forward on our precious land. We have arranged a large assault on PLA positions along HWY 257. We have even learnt from some POW's we captured, and heard the news that the PLA has fooled African foreign nationals into being shanghai'd into their imperialistic War of Aggression on our beautiful continent. We would like to open up a surrender line for these victims of the PLA war effort, staffed by our linguistics experts with fluency in the languages of countries known to have known Chinese aggression, and have the details broadcast on social media and via shortwave/AM/FM radio. They will be given fair treatment, offered a ticket back to a safe African country on a flight, and enough funds to get them back home. If some wish to fight back against the PLA, perhaps we can look into making some arrangements. Expect photographs and video footage from our successful offensive on Tierra Del Fuego soon!

[This is the public facing message. The real battle plans follows. Classified Top Secret. Only Brigade commanders and their 2IC, and up are cleared to read this, and this plan is only to be relayed to the troops right before the start of the operation]

The Real goal on TDF: We must evacuate TDF with all due haste. Given that we have two PLA brigades breathing down our neck with more likely disembarking at Rio Grande, we have very little time to get 250+ armored vehicles across the strait on a single RORO ferry. Thus, to honour the commander's intent to be aggressive, we are planning a widely publicized feint to try to fool the PLA into thinking we're going to commit to a foolhardy assault. On the 18th, we're going to tell the newspapers that we're attacking, and we're going to get the photographers to take some action shots of the artillery pounding away on the western flank, the 24th mechanized rolling out of Franco Bianco, and our Hueys looking busy with angry young soldiers ready to roll in. All of this will be published to support this conceit. The artillery is going to spend a large amount of their munitions on aggressive shelling of known PLA positions for their photoshoot, and then pull back to Campo Cerro on the 18th. The signals company is to find some local frequencies known to be used by the PLA, and blast out our pre-recorded propaganda messages to the shanghai'd contract soldiers.

Then on the 19th, We're going to have the infantry do a probing attack on the PLA BDE on HWY 257, see what they do, and then make a withdrawal at best speed. The supply base and assets at Franco Bianco airfield, the C2 and other specialized assets of the Brigade, and the armored artillery are going to prepare on the 18th, and then be rapidly demobilized and evacuated across the strait during the offensive operations on the 19th, under the cover of the poor weather.

The paratroopers are going to deploy in a nearby valley,(only if the C-130's can manage it safely, their flight lead can scrub this mission at any point of the operation), and support a probing attack by our two infantry regiments on the PLA brigade south of the bridge on HWY 257 at -52.9348557, -69.3239742 , ideally with some showy munitions like cluster bombs from some F-5's to encourage them to pull back. We have some suspicions that this brigade may be partially manned with unwilling contract soldiers that were recruited under false pretenses back in Africa. Ideally, this shock and awe gambit scares the PLA brigade enough to initiate a retreat/withdrawal, if they're as we hope and are mostly the unmotivated contract soldiers. The infantry are to run a large[ie. Permanent smoke marker ingame] smoke generator once they reach the limit of their advance, so the F-5's know where the FLOT is.

The Airborne are to be deployed with a pallet of anti tank mines, and if the PLA retreats, they are to join the two mechanized regiments with the mines. They are then to make best speed back up the highway, and we request that the airforce then blows the bridge behind them, *ONLY AFTER ALL OUR UNITS MAKE IT ACROSS SAFELY* . If this plan goes to poo poo, the airborne are to retreat to the valley they inserted in and start moving northward on the double, and the mechanized infantry are to retreat back to Cerro Sombrero and the bridge gets blown as planned. If the plan goes well, the airborne will hitch a ride on top of the mechanized vehicles, set up some AT mines further up the highway near the Gepard, and all of the units will then make their way to Campo Cerro.

The engineer battalion is going to spend this time mining HWY Y-65, and then the armored regiment and engineers are to start pulling back to the ferry down the highway, being next in priority after the supply units, the artillery, and the specialized support units. Recon and MI pulls back to Franco Bianco when the infantry starts their withdrawal.

AO Bolt

The Chilean Division are to withdraw to the west of Nav point INDEPENDIENTE, and set up defensive lines. The reinforced infantry regiments are to set up on the West flank, and the recon unit is to make best speed to Bellavista 6. The Argentinian 9th Mech BDE will pull back to Santa Maria, and set up a defensive line there. We request that the air force look at hitting some of the bridges supplying the PLA advance on the front, and hopefully slow down the brigades that are offloading at Punta Arenas.

FIRE MISSION

The Astros II battery is to load their SS-40* MLRS pods, with a max range of 40 km and having 16 rockets per launcher pod. They are to deploy from Rio Gallagos to the ridges shown in the following graphic, and suppress/destroy the hostile tube artillery around Cabo Negro. The artillery units from the 9th Mech are also to position themselves to fire across the strait, and coordinate their fires and counterbattery calculations with the Astros battery. Once the artillery is dealt with, they are to support the 9th BDE with fires on PLA advances. They are to have their AShM refit of X-300's prepared and ready to deploy from Rio Gallagos, if the need to pivot to a coastal defense battery arises

Logistics Changes

Please see attached plan for logistics. Supply base 'Bolsa de Tenancia' is to be dismantled, and moved back to Monte Aymond right off HWY 3. The Chilean 5th division's primary supply base 'Magallanes' will deploy to Primavera, and set up on the west side of the bridge off HWY 9. We request that the locomotives in storage be brought back into service to ply the Rio Turbio Railway between Rio Turbio and Rio Gallagos. The railway will focus on providing bulk supplies from the port to the Western side of the theatre, and the highway will be used for smaller, varied loads and 2 way transit.

NASAMS

The NASAMS battery is to deploy back to Riquelme Bajo, about 10 km behind the division to provide SAM coverage for the troops.

Combined Air Combat Command – SCAD

Good evening flight leads,

Again, I would like to commend your valiant efforts over the last few days, especially considering the disaster we faced on the 17th. However we must continue to move forward with our plans. As stated in my address earlier Colonel Rivera and I have restructured how these mission briefings will be delivered to you – including now having mission information available on the strategic map for your perusal. We do have some expectations that you will coordinate with your fellows if your flight is tasked to work in conjunction with another. Please consider if you are on a bombing run and you need SEAD support, talk to the team doing your SEAD support. Who that is should be a lot clearer with the new formats though. That being said we will of course listen to feedback about how data is presented. Anyway on with the briefing in basic, please remember to refer to the Package Briefing Sheet for your waypoints after this presentation:

Major point to all pilots: PLEASE look on the map for the Maximum Risk Barrier indicator on the Eastern side of Tierra del Fuego. AVOID GOING PAST THIS BARRIER!

MAP LINK HERE IN CASE YOU HAVE LOST IT

Airforce Controlled P-3's - Continue with previous tasking.

SPRINGFIELD – No assignment at this stage. Concerns about ability of the Mirage F1’s to identify friend from foe in this weather.

CHEVY – No assignment at this stage. Weather not conducive to operation of SU-25T airframes.

SHELL – Tasked to ORBIT in the centre of friendly airspace between points SCNT and SAWG to provide REUFELING services to aircraft that require it.

COLT – Assigned to BARCAP focused around BOCA and INDEPENDIENTE. Coordinate with Flight Lead of VENOM to discuss when they will require BARCAP to go up. [Map reference: Blue Polygon]

PONTIAC – Assigned to conduct TARCAP and ESCORT in region of ISLA CARLOS III, you are to maintain Air Superiority in this airspace and provide protection to FORD and ASCOT for their missions. [Map reference: Green Polygon]

ASCOT – Assigned to conduct supply drop of pallets with GPS beacons over the glacier containing the Old Radar Site to the South-West of ISLA CARLOS III. As above TARCAP/ESCORT to be provide by PONTIAC. Geocordinates for drop are: -53.81376, -72.57937. Logistics and content of pallets to be determined by General Humberto as this is supplies to his SpecOps teams. [Map reference: Grey Line]

Operating in AO Bolt we have:

Venom 1 – Tasked to ESCORT Panther 1 on their mission – objectives are to conduct SEAD and A2A. Supress hostile air defences ahead of Panther 1 and provide TARCAP for Panther 1 as they perform strike operations before egressing. Further you will be required to assist Panther 1 in locating bridge laying operations. [Map Reference: Gold Line, check pins in area]

Panther 1 – Tasked to conduct logistics INTERDICTION with preprogramed JDAMS. You are to coordinate with Venom 1 to locate bridge laying operations in the AO and await Venom 1 to conduct suppression of hostile air defences. First STRIKE target is “Chile AO BOLT Bridge 4” (see map pin) after which you are to turn North and disrupt “Bridge Laying Operations” (see map pin) by Laguna Verdana with STRIKE (target aprox at -52.732716, -70.885672) [Map reference: Green Line]

Operating in AO Arrow we have:

Venom 2 – Tasked to ESCORT Panther 2 on their mission – objectives are to conduct SEAD and A2A. Supress hostile air defences ahead of Panther 2 and provide TARCAP for Panther 2 as they perform strike operations before egressing back over the water. [Map reference: Blue Line]

Panther 2 – Tasked to conduct logistics INTERDICTION with preprogramed JDAMS. You are to coordinate with Venom 2 and await them to supress hostile air defences. You are then to conduct STRIKE on Bridge 3, Bridge 1 and Bridge 4 (see map pins in AO Arrow) with the preprogramed JDAMS before egressing back out over the water. [Map reference: Red Line]

Uzi – Tasked to STRIKE mission on BSA at approximately -52.883281, -69.949950 with cluster munitions. You are to await confirmation from Venom 2 of suppression of local air defences before making your attack. [Map reference: Pink Line]

Please direct any questions to myself or to Colonel Rivera (old call sign Shan for anyone who knows him) and we will do our best to paint a clear picture. The Package Briefing will be updated soon with waypoints and concise steps.

Just want to remind Flight Leads that the pathways on the maps are only to communicate general intent and can be considered mere suggestions at best.

Flight plans are to be developed and set by Flight Leads. (although I will be updating the spreadsheet with very general way points and whatever)

Our probing attack will be conducted for 40 Minutes from the start of the mission. We will then withdraw over the bridge on HWY 257. We request air forces save Bridge 3 for last, and only until we've crossed over it successfully.

In the worst case scenario, we do have amphibious APC's, so if you're getting close to Bingo fuel, or need to get your munitions off before hostile CAP pushes you out, then please coordinate with the ABM and ground commander[Negostrike in CA] to ensure the bridge is clear before you drop your bombs. Any of our units left on the hostile side of the bridge will have to retreat across the river.

Admiral Ileana Maria Sampaio
South American Combined Armada

A memo came across my desk indicating that the USSOUTHCOM liaison to SCAD, Col. Forsythe, had authorized the delivery of much needed pre-positioned aid supplies. This is excellent news, and will be much appreciated by the people of Chile and Argentina wherever they are directed. I might suggest that Puerto Natales would be a good location for these supplies, as the small city is beginning to suffer shortages due to mobilization. They could be delivered by land via Ruta 9 and El Calafate, by sea via ferry route from Puerto Montt, or by air to Teniente Julio Gallardo Airport, Puerto Natales (SCNT).

In addition, Col. Forsythe requested Named Areas of Interest (NAI) for reconnaissance gathering. For this I would identify the major logistical sites servicing the PLA invasion forces - in particular the PLAN Magellan Strait supply route consisting of Puerto Punta Arenas, Port Harris, Puerto Ushuaia, Puerto Williams, and Port Stanley. Understanding the reinforcement and resupply capacity of the PLA forces will surely prove critical in targeting those assets and winning this war.

Finally the admiralty can identify three significant operational needs that may be submitted to USSOUTHCOM for review. They are as follows:

1. The HMS Invincible is known to have recently run aground near Comodoro Rivadavia, and is currently stuck. Her escorts and Harrier air wing are protecting the ship from attack, but time is of the essence to prevent the accident from becoming calamitous. As the operators of the premier carrier force in the world, as well as close allies of the United Kingdom, and the nearest member of NATO, the United States would be the natural experts to advise on freeing the ship in a timely fashion. I suggest coordinating with the Royal Navy in sending commercial salvors and US Navy Seabees to the site as soon as possible to examine the ship and produce recommendations. As Admiral of the SACA, I would of course offer all logistical support required to the US and the UK. In particular, I would suggest that the large commercial cargo ports of Puerto Santos, near São Paulo, Brazil, as well as Puerto San Lorenzo-San Martin, near Buenos Aires, Argentina, may have sufficient cargo barge resources to extract the stricken vessel.

2. An unknown fleet believed to be led by a PLAN Liaoning-class carrier has been rumored to have been sailing towards our area of operations, and was last spotted some 6,000 km / 3,250 nmi away near the British overseas territory of Saint Helena. For obvious reasons, the threat of this vessel and her air wing contingent is quite high. The support of USSOUTHCOM in identifying the composition of this fleet to us, as well as keeping SACA apprised of their approximate position and course, would be appreciated.

3. The Lockheed S-3 Viking utility aircraft has been recently retired by the US Navy in 2009, and has been placed in storage for hypothetical future usage. While I understand that Foreign Military Sales and Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreements are not your area of expertise, I would nonetheless request that USSOUTHCOM consider assisting in the transfer of those obsoleted aircraft to the Argentinean and Brazilian Navies. Their capabilities as refueling aircraft would prove invaluable to our carrier forces, particularly if operating outside the effective range of KC-130 or KC-135 tankers. With the unfortunate failure of our A-4 buddy-tanking capabilities, believed related to PRC cyber-warfare attacks by the PLASSF Unit 61398 "Comment Group", our carrier fleets have struggled to maintain the attack range needed to deal with this invasion. The preferred tactic of the US Navy developed during Vietnam was to load A-4s with as much weaponry as possible, then utilize air-to-air refueling to allow those heavily-laden aircraft to perform their combat air strikes with maximum range and power. Refueling is also a critical need for aviators attempting to land in poor weather when diverting to air fields is not possible. The addition of Viking S-3s to our naval forces would be a critical asset.

This memo and the attached naval requisition requests will be sent to the desks of SCAD Air Commander Gen. Scholz, as well as their executive officer Col. Rivera, with my compliments. -S

  • Assets: 5× A-4E Skyhawks
  • Frequency : 131.50MHz
  • Airbase: ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (Tower: 225.00MHz, TCN: 25X (VCM), ICLS: 1)
  • Loadout: Varying, see slides.
  • Condition: Alpha - Orbit steer point 2 until local air superiority is achieved by Pontiac.

Intent : Sink or render inoperable a PLAN Type 054 frigate guarding the Strait of Magellan.

Gameplan

The invaders have stationed a guided missile frigate in the Strait of Magellan, guarding the bend in the Strait leading to Puntas Arenas. Command wants it sunk and our squadron has been tasked to put it on the bottom. Normally attacking such a vessel would be suicide for our fighters but we have several advantages:

  • The Type 054 frigate is primarily armed with anti-ship weaponry and while it can launch surface to air missiles its VSL magazines will likely have a limited number of rounds to expend.
  • The rugged mountainous terrain of our land provides ample cover and the opportunity to sucker the enemy into wasting SAM shots needlessly.
  • The Type 054 has laughably poor coverage (see insert) with its close in weapon systems.

Our plan is to duck into the mountains north of the target while one flight member at a time pokes their head above the peaks to taunt the frigate into firing one or more SAMs. Once missiles are in the air the pilot will dive back below mountain top level to evade the missiles. When we are confident the frigate has expended its available missiles or has decided to stop wasting them on us, we will reform and rush out to sea to attack. The CWIS on this frigate can only cover arcs directly to the sides of the ship. We will attack from the stern or bow of the vessel, where their guns cannot reach us. We will not loiter and reattack but continue on course after dropping our ordinance to assure that we do not stray into the ship's field of fire. While the CWIS should not be a factor with this attack profile, small arms may be expected. Follow the Strait home.

  • Ford flights will depart mother flying the ship's 090 radial and climbing to 1000' before entering a holding pattern 10 miles from the boat until all Ford members have rejoined.
  • Once collected, Fords will continue on route to steer point 2 (FP on map) while remaining below mountain top level.
  • Ford flights will orbit steer point 2 until Pontiac flight has confirmed it controls the skies over the Strait of Magellan, then continue to steer point 3 (IP on the map).
  • At steer point 3 (IP) Fords will once again enter an orbit below mountain top level while each member of Ford flights in turn ascends above mountain top level to bait the PLAN warship into firing an anti-aircraft missile before descending back into safety behind a mountain to spoil the shot.
  • Once it has been determined that the vessel has expended all anti-aircraft missiles or has chosen to cease firing needlessly, we will strike.
  • Fords will assume a trail formation and manoeuvre to approach the enemy vessel directly from the stern or bow (see slide inset) at low altitude (400-500') and high speed (400kts) and attack as the ship comes into range. After attacking, flight members will continue on same course until well clear of the ship's weapon range.
  • Fords will follow the Strait of Magellan home while reforming. Steer point 5 is approximately where we should pick up mother's TACAN signal.

Loadouts:

Most members of Ford flights will be armed with Zuni rockets. While lacking the pure explosive power needed to destroy a naval vessel, we will be bringing a lot of them, and our pilots are experienced in their employment.

Ford 1-2 has opt'd for high drag bombs and a pair of sidewinders, just in case Pontiac misses a hostile aircraft or doesn't exist come game day.

Ford 1-1 will be armed entirely with high drag bombs. While snakeyes are an unconventional weapon to use against a warship, our low altitude high speed attack profile is ideal for their employment, and it will look totally sick if Mederlok and I can pull it off.

Notes:

  • The weather is awful with a low ceiling, fog banks, rain squalls, and limited visibility. Figure out how to use the terrain avoidance mode of your radar so you don't fly into a mountain side. Remember to pay attention to your surroundings and do not fly into a fellow flight member.
  • Our landing at the boat will likely be CASE II or CASE III. DCS's carrier logic does not handle multiple returning birds in CASE II/III and will assign marshal points all over space instead of a nice stack. We'll be ignoring that and establish our own marshal 15nm behind the boat on the reciprocal of the BRC. We'll trap in order of fuel remaining.
  • A tanker will (probably) be available at the boat. I don't expect anyone to actually be able to use the tanker, but it's there if anyone wants to take a shot.
  • Our divert field is Puerto Natales, roughly 100mn north of mother. That is a long way to go if you're short on gas, so decide early if you think you won't be able to make the boat.

Thank you to Big Soda for the graphics, they're pretty awesome.

Commander. During a routine pre-operation inspection I noticed that our supply of JDAM weaponry is quite low, our current count is 10 remaining. I have a Technical team scouring the facility for more, but given the tiny size of this airbase I believe this is all we have. Unfortunately I can't find anyone here who had a proper count and the Logistics staff that set up our facility have since departed. We must, unfortunately, use them sparingly after this operation.

UZI 1 Flight Brief

Change of mission from higher HQs, UZI is no longer supporting the light infantry attacking on highway 257. Good luck riflemen, enjoy your C-130 ride!

UZI is now tasked to bomb a forward supply point along Highway Y-65, in and among a small hamlet.

Takeoff, fly ~198 magnetic for 69nm from Gallegos to BULLS, checkin with Buzzard on 262.
Flight will switch TACAN to 66X (BULLS) enroute in order to assist with navigation and as reference if required by ABM.

Will hold north of BULLS, just north of Strait of Magellan until CAP (VENOM 2) in place.

Target is roughly 133 for 17 from BULLS. Helpfully, the path from BULLS to the target follows an obvious coastline. Below is an unlimited visibility view from BULLS to target from about 6,500 feet.
.

The Acceptable Level of Risk (ALR) for aircraft on this mission is HIGH.

Air to Ground ALR Matrix

If time/threat allows, potential to re-arm re-attack, since this is a simple flight in and out. Command called for clusters, but flight is likely going to ignore that based on weather conditions (windy plus muddy earth plus low ceiling are all bad for CBU employment) and threat, which is likely HQ-7s, AAA/HMG fire, and IR SAMs of unknown location and number!

Ok, mission brief to myself complete.

It will take some 48 hours to get them ready for sortieing out, but this kind of op tempo is brutal for a fleet of three planes.

However, good news: the delivery of the Harpoons at Rio de Janeiro has been made available. these three containers, 12 harpoons each, can be delivered to San Julian by ship or charter aircraft, they can be loaded and used on the FAB P-3s.

11th Mech BDE of Argentine Army is slowly ceding ground, but in decent shape and not currently getting overwhelmed. Brigade commander reports good confidence for orderly retreat.

The Mech Engineer Brigade is laying AT mines but has no AP mines as Ottawa Treaty was adhered to and Argentina had very few to begin with.

Brigade commander is asking if there is any large hospital that the current flow of wounded can be directed two after they leave the Role 2 at the northern Ferry Terminal?

When should the evacuation of Supply Base "Bolsa de Tenencia" begin? And to where?

..............

General of the Combined Armies, CSAD

SB Bolsa de Tenancia is to relocate immediately. SB Magallanes of the Chilean Division is to deploy as well. The designated MSR's, and in particular the rail line, are to be activated to support the flow of supplies to the units at the front. I can designate specific BSA's in addition to the division level supply bases, please advise the granularity that you require. Please refer to the released changes to the logistics plan for our units on the front line:

Mederlock posted:

Please inform the Chilean Punta Arenas Battlegroup to make sure they array ~10 km forward of it, so they're still in it's protective radius.

Our logisticians are pushing the supplies to Buenos Aires and then assisting with truck contracting, but once they hit that release point it will be up to your local authorities to orchestrate their movement according to your plans and needs.

quote:

In addition, Col. Forsythe requested Named Areas of Interest (NAI) for reconnaissance gathering. For this I would identify the major logistical sites servicing the PLA invasion forces - in particular the PLAN Magellan Strait supply route consisting of Puerto Punta Arenas, Port Harris, Puerto Ushuaia, Puerto Williams, and Port Stanley. Understanding the reinforcement and resupply capacity of the PLA forces will surely prove critical in targeting those assets and winning this war.

Our J2 identified their SPODs and APODs as priorities for collection, but understand that we are reliant mostly on photographic ISR, and the weather is not often cooperative.

Finally the admiralty can identify three significant operational needs that may be submitted to USSOUTHCOM for review. They are as follows:

quote:

1. The HMS Invincible is known to have recently run aground near Comodoro Rivadavia,

We are in communication with the United Kingdom regarding the ongoing and unfortunate situation with the HMS Invincible. All communications regarding this incident and the investigation into the incident should be referred to the United Kingdom, who can speak on behalf of their forces and recovery efforts.

quote:

2. An unknown fleet believed to be led by a PLAN Liaoning-class carrier has been rumored to have been sailing towards our area of operations, and was last spotted some 6,000 km / 3,250 nmi away near the British overseas territory of Saint Helena.

The carrier remains in the USAFRICOM AOR, and recently departed Saint Helena. It is likely either headed toward the shipping lanes between North Africa/West Med and Natal or may patrol and replenish vicinity of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.
File Photo:

quote:

3. The Lockheed S-3 Viking utility aircraft has been recently retired by the US Navy in 2009...

I can run that up the chain. One of our staff aviators says there are still some flying doing range work or even flying weather and NASA stuff, but none of them are carrier-serviceable anymore, based on airframe stress, so they only do land ops now.

In any case, it sounds like you are looking for a capability to aerial refuel and to increase your maritime patrol, right? I can be more helpful if you all identify capabilities required rather than naming specific items or systems. That will get more answers instead of the bureaucracy answering literally on whether a specific asset is available or not. Similarly, if you or your components have priority intelligence requirements, like questions we can answer for your command to enable decision points, that would be helpful.

I know that all of the above might not sound that helpful, but we are working this through the appropriate channels and echelons. The US is committed to ensuring you all have the tools to be successful in this war of self defense against PRC aggression.

Separately, USSOUTHCOM is authorized to facilitate the transfer of 1,500 LAW and AT-4 Rockets, 30 million rounds of small arms ammunition, repair parts for Avenger and Vulcan Fire Units, over 1,000 anti-tank mines, 40,000 rounds of field artillery ammunition, 100 TOW Missiles, and ~100 M47 Dragons. These will be shipped via a mix of US cargo aircraft and surface vessel, frontloading AT weapons and artillery ammunition. These weapons transfers are not to be messaged publicly. If and when they become public due to use on the battlefield, a condition of being issued the weapons is that the US controls all messaging on this military assistance. This batch was rapidly developed based on expected needs and combat so far, but as your forces shape their requirements, the US may be able to better match our ability to assist with your requirements.

Air Tasking Order (18 FEB 10): ELINT Aerial Surveillance of Punta Arenas / Tierra del Fuego

Aircraft: 1 x Beechcraft RC-12 Guardrail
Mission Distance: 891 km / 481 nmi

Description: A recon flight is needed to surveil three (3) sites of interest in the Punta Arenas / Tierra del Fuego region.

Today's mission would have been some lovely sight-seeing had it not been 5am. I was under orders to follow the recon flight waypoints closely, do not deviate, do not fly into any granite clouds, and keep as much electronic equipment off as possible, so the ELINT soldiers could collect whatever they're looking for. No lights, no radios, no TCAS, not a single luxury. Someone in the back gave me guff when I took a moment to check in with the spouse via SMS, so off my cellphone went as well. Just be a Beechcraft-shaped hole in the sky, and for the next two hours, hope nobody accidentally gets vectored into us.

Nothing but the bleak blackness of the Atlantic for the first few waypoints. Dawn slowly approached as we came back ashore, with some lights from scattered towns to look at while monitoring the flight. The ELINT soldiers busily chattered away about whatever it was they were trying to gather, and out of curiosity I tried to listen in on their conversations when I got a tap on the shoulder.

"Hey uh, piloto!"
-"Yes uh, soldado?"
"Yeah let me know when we're 90 seconds from waypoint 5, okay?"
-"Ah, sure thing."

A curious request, I thought, but harmless. ELINT people, who knows.

Approaching waypoint 5, I knew we were getting pretty close to the action. 10,000' below us, our comrades were doing their best to give the PLA hell. Once the navigation ETA said 90 seconds, I tapped the roof with my fist and turned around to yell the timing into the cabin. As I cleared waypoint 5 and moved to our final waypoint, someone laughed and loudly announced to the cabin, "I dropped my own bomb on the PLA!"

The plane knew what was happening before I did.

The eye-watering stench roiled through the air. It hit like a tidal wave that smelled of wet dog and a used diaper covered in burnt hair. Dropped their own bomb? This was friendly fire! My co-pilot and I did what we could to increase cabin venting, and we bravely withheld the urge to strap on our emergency oxygen masks.

The minutes passed like hours as the heavy aroma filtered away. I was never so happy to get the plane turned for home.

After a quiet and uneventful landing, I kept the doors closed after shutting down the plane. Once the aircraft was secure, I stood up and glared into the cabin:

-"Hijo de un camión lleno de mierda! Which one of you desecrated my plane?!"

There were some snickers, but silence.

Bastards.

Colt 1 & Colt 2 Briefing

Mayor Rachel "Karrick" Paredes, Escuadrón Aéreo 612

Assets: 4x MiG-29S
Flight Frequency: 134.00MHz
ABM Frequency: 261.00MHz
Air Base: Puerto Natales
Loadout: 1 center tank, 2x R-27ER, 2x R-77, 2x R-73

Intent: Provide BARCAP over the northern side of the Strait of Magellan.

Note: If using the return nav mode Puerto Natales is #12.

We’re splitting into two elements for this one, mi hijos. Colt 1 will be composed of myself (1-1) and Breaky (1-2). Colt 2 will be composed of Lord Stimperor (1-3) and Pygmalion (1-4).

Colt 1 will head direct INDEPENDIENTE. Colt 2 will head direct to BOCA. Cruise will be Mach .8 at 9000 meters. Check in with ABM on 261 when you arrive. Colt 1 will set up an East-West racetrack pattern just south of INDEPENDIENTE. Colt 2 will setup a Northeast/Southwest racetrack pattern south of BOCA. Check out with ABM when you need to RTB.

Flightpaths in blue. Waypoint numbers in purple. Note the much nicer graphics for friendly and enemy ground forces, our AOs, and the S-300 threat band. I went to flight school, not art school.

Expected Threats:
Venom flight is tasked with providing SEAD. Nevertheless, exercise caution when engaging over the Strait of Magellan. Do not find yourself so far south that you’re within the red band on the map – that is the best estimate of the enemy S-300’s engagement envelope.

We know the enemy has J-7s in the area. Not much to say about these – our jets and weapons should outperform them handily. Just don’t get cocky.

Fuel. Mind your fuel state if we have to party, our afterburners guzzle fuel like nobody's business.

Good job.

Points of interest;

Site 31: Detected vehicle convoys and extensive radio chatter all the way down Highway 257, culminating in high probability that the intersection of Highway 257 and Y-71 has a supply area or perhaps a staging ground.

Site 32: The convoy from earlier days is now gone. The supply base is still active however. The road sees regular movement, no stuck convoys or rush hour. HQ-7 still active there. The artillery location hasn't changed either at Cabo Negro.

Site 33: groups of ships detected at Punta Arenas Harbor. The ships at Terminal Cabo Negro and the Methanex Port seem to be gone near Maria Olvio. At Los Coipos, the the Forward Supply Point of the Chilean Army's 4th Armor Brigage is another comms emission hub now, probably overtaken and re-used by the PLAGF.
All movement and radio activity has ceased at the attempted bridge crossing at Laguna Verdana. It is not being used for anything.

Extra intel based on route:

Large number of DDGs and FFGs detected just north of Rio Grande. Extremly high probability that it is the 1st PLAN fleet moving closer to Rio Grande to offer SAM coverage and mutual support with the S-300 sites.
