So, does the book address why the Egyptian commanders so obstinate in coordinating with the invasion force during the Gulf War? Did the generals have political reasons to drag their heels? It seems like being defeated for a whole day by a trench that's on fire is pretty sad.

I omitted this part of the discussion, but since you are interested

I will close out to say that this idea of being overreliant on a script and despising improvization is something that has manifested in places outside of Egypt: the Millennium Challenge was so controversial precisely because Gen. Van Riper went "off-script", and the relatively unknown aspect of those wargames was Van Riper feeling like he had to because he was placed under rules so strict that the outcome was practically predetermined if he played by them

I'm glad you put me onto this book and topic. I've ordered a half dozen books on the Jordanian Army, which should arrive this week, but I can't for the life of me figure out how the Hashemite monarchy continues to sit on the sidelines, as the country is now filled with both Palestinian and over a million Syrian refugees.

The Army is apparently the greatest source of stability in Jordan, but that being the case surely protecting the holy sites in Jerusalem sits at the top of that list? If Jordanian national identity came from guardianship of those sites until 1967, they can't let all that get razed to the ground now. The Army (and therefore King) has to fight for them to keep its place in society, right?

I think it just feels over the top because often the dissent is contained and futile and still gets slammed down hard, like random people at Ivey leagues, random provincial politicians here in Canada or the UN secretary general. All people who either are irrelevant to, or will happily serve, the processes that allow empire to continue, but are still immediately crushed when they don't show enough deference. It's going to slowly further erode support for Israel in the long run, but nothing Israel currently does could be considered long-term thinking.

I mean we have multiple reports that hamas’s breach of the fence was followed up by other militias and also just random Gazans realizing they were free, and it’s reasonable to suspect that at least some of the attacks on border communities were carried out by those groups

I wonder if this whole thing has put the king of jordan at risk of a coup. A lot of the soldiers must be fuming for the chance to fight israel and liberate palestine using actual tanks and fighter jets and poo poo, in view of the fact that a bunch of dudes on paragliders totally owned the Israeli army.
