The PJIF which funded it was 55 million over three years. Labour weren't going to continue it and National opposed it on principal. Fortunately NZ On Air picked it up for 23/24 and hopefully might continue to. I could see Peters supporting it, although NACT would happily let the market decide.

Also pick up any newspaper who are the main advertisers? Usually it is full page ads for real estate firms and car dealers. While editorial is meant to be independent of the ad sales. They will always protect the money.

Yes people are using "owned by" in the common shorthand sense of "represents the views and interests of, because of profit incentives".

i feel like there's something missing in language that fucks up all discussion of systems, historical forces and so on. everybody ends up talking about individuals - themselves, people they know - e.g. a big one recently has been "do you condemn hamas" whenever someone talks about historical motivators for hamas' actions. like an individual's views do not change the systemic analysis. even if they own a media company. hell a media owner is likely to be liberal due to the kinds of people they'd be around (journalists, artists and craftspeople), even if their economic interests don't match up with that. contradiction on those terms isn't unusual. this isn't to poo poo on anybody it's just a trend i see that really derails a lot of actual analysis in discussions

Yeah a lot of people hear "social construct" and think it means "not real" or something. That's just our monkey brains in action. Anything we can't ignore we find a box for and categorise using our own experiences. Still, we're posting to an old forum full of aging edgy millennials here, our hot takes aren't going to bring about peace in the middle east, so just do your best, I'm not a cop.

I mean I’ve heard these people talk. I know what they believe. and no excuses they’re also forced into a corner because no one wants to pay for news and so the media companies are desperate and have to chase the dollar. journalism is truly hosed now and unless people are prepared to pay for proper journalism it’ll all end up as bottom feeding poo poo. we are all to blame

Large parrots - both mountain and forest - are incredibly cool. But so are penguins - both yellow-eyed and little blue. Oh, and fantails are cool. And tui. And you can't overlook the ruru. Or kereru. And heck, I like the swamp harrier. And the swamp pukeko!

...this is going to be difficult. Maybe I'll vote for the bat so I don't have to choose?
