They also killed fellow officers embedded on the unionist side without knowing who they really were, as a lot of the 'terrorist activity' in the mid 90's was government orchestrated pantomime. In the space of a week, five of those whistleblowers died of heart attacks while out jogging and a sixth died of a heart attack in his bath. They all lived in different parts of the country after leaving the military, and their deaths weren't linked. Healthy men in their late 20's/early 30's die of heart attacks all the time. The surviving six were visited and reminded in no uncertain terms to keep quiet. 25 years later, not a single one has uttered a peep.

I think as long as no one invents a way to somehow scan messages for illegal content without unencrypting them, then there should be no change. It's basically a useless bit off the law so that they can say they did something.

Yeah, Jaeluni is absolutely right that they were balls to the wall ready to demand nothing be encrypted until (as Guava said) someone pointed out that the covid comission (or a future inquiry into something else) could use this to demand their WhatsApp messages, and they suddenly became remarkably 'respectful of the right to privacy.' I honestly think they were hoping for an "except for us" clause but then realised it would be impossible to word so that it included all of their friends in the press etc. So they just worded it in a vague enough way that it can be enforced on a "whenever we want it to be" basis.
