The NES just got kinda lucky that they could shove another full-on CPU in there and get, say, Mario 3 level poo poo.

There were multiple contributing factors to the video game crash; I don't really think there was one hard instigating factor, but a bunch of middling ones that resulted in a lack of public trust, etc. Re: NSoQ, it's hilarious but it had nothing to do with the quality, from a gameplay perspective, of a game and everything to do with "Does this game launch and run without crashing, and is it the actual game that was advertised", bars that many, many Atari games couldn't hit.

That game is super impressive for an official 2600 cart. Some of the modern homebrews are pretty incredible too, like the arcade ports from Champ Games, but the new devs are all using modern tools the old guard could only dream of to get stuff going.
